I had a home invasion once that felt like a sketch comedy bit. It was two large islander fellas who shoved their way into my apartment one night and started angrily asking after someone I'd never heard of. They kept me on the couch for a few minutes while they searched my very small apartment, calling back and forth to each other while I'm still just laughing nervously and telling them I think they have the wrong address. They gave up, kind of half-apologised/half-threatened me, and left. It was extremely weird. It was more confusing than scary.

Prey at Night is GORGEOUS in terms of overall cinematography and choreography, and I'm so glad it's finally getting its due as a popcorn movie. I plan to get a tattoo of Luke and The Man in the pool, the imagery is that great. I swear, if it was an "original" movie and didn't have to stand up to the reputation of The Strangers (which in itself straddles the line of cult classic vs hated), people would've eaten it up. In a decade of "elevated" (aka often pretentious and beyond the reasonable point of depressing) horror, it scratched the slasher itch that nearly nothing else managed to accomplish in the 2010s.
@nathanwilliams11102 жыл бұрын
What I think is my favourite aspect of this movie is how it frames The Strangers themselves. Compared to the first one, they are more experienced in having killed for years but they've grown complacent and cocky. With the way they harass the teens its obvious that they are messing with him to get a kick out of their fear but their complacency is what allows Luke to get that surprise kill. I think thats why this movie works so well, they think, just like the audience that they are gonna get an easy kill until Luke turns the tables on one of them, immediately getting you hooked into that 3rd act as now you think the teens have a chance.
@joshuawilliams38862 жыл бұрын
Indeed it does! It does exactly what a sequel should do and changes the dynamic up. The first film was a modern home invasion shot and executed in the style of a 70’s horror flick. It was suspenseful, isolated, and set on a slow-burn. Prey At Night is a throwback to the next era in horror in that it’s an 80’s slasher with the brighter colors, more open environment with action set-pieces, and a comparatively higher bloody bodycount.
@adamdesalle63382 жыл бұрын
I really enjoyed Prey at Night having not seen the first film - sure, the character’s make dumb-decisions that end up in their inevitable deaths, and there are many plot contrivances, but just like Ryan mentioned, the idiosyncrasies between colourful fun poppy 80s vibes and the brutality of the serial killers felt fresh and cool.
@Duothimir2 жыл бұрын
The thing about dumb decisions in horror movies is that it's really easy to call them out from the safety of your armchair, but in a life or death situation where the adrenaline is pumping and every second matters, most normal people just aren't going to think rationally.

The backstory to the music video to that song became a cautionary tale for music artists who were dipping their toes into music videos for the very first time. Some "artists" in the begining thought of it as a only passing fad and thought it a secondary promotional gimick. Bonnie Tyler left the video for the song completely up to the director who was chosen. He churned out a glossy, pretentious homoerotic tome that had absolutely nothing at all to do with the song. Tyler became the butt of many music industry jokes.

I thought Prey at Night was an enjoyable slasher film. . .which is saying something lol I feel like the part where the kids started fighting back really subverted the expectations established for The Strangers from the first film where they are so good at stalking, sneaking, hiding, and their terror tactics that it borders on supernatural, but in this one we see when it comes down to an actual fight they aren't particularly skilled or abnormally physically fit. They mostly just have psychopathic determination and a lack of fear going for them. I like how it further established them as average people who just decided to be thrill killers because they could.

It felt like it lost a lot of the grittiness and the claustrophobia of the original, and instead went for more kills and action. Was also incredibly disappointed that all three of the strangers, who have been killing persumably a LOT of people, were all 3 killed by two teenagers. You're telling me these guys have killed dozens, if not hundreds of people, most of which are full-grown adults with weapons sometimes, but two estranged teenagers is what did them in? I would have been fine with one or two deaths, but killing all three felt cheap and undeserved for what ended up being two pretty boring and uninteresting main characters.

The best way to describe the films is the original is Halloween 1978, a horror film about killers with no motive, going after people with no apparent reason and Prey at Night is Friday the 13th part 6. A more over the top, action packed slasher sequel, that takes a very different direction. Also I completely disagree with 5:18. There is definitely a thematic purpose, and it would work with 70s music. Prey at night isn’t modeled after 70s horror like the original, it’s modeled after 80s slasher, which is why it has the over the top action like the family fighting back and the truck exploding, which is similar to f13 part 6. In that film People fight back against Jason, and he crashes a RV. It’s less grounded and more about enjoyment watching the film.

Passed up on this cause a friend of mine said it was really really bad. I probably shouldn’t have listened to him cause he said Nightmare On Elm Street was bad too lol

I think maybe I need to watch this again. I LOVE the original and was super underwhelmed after seeing the sequel. I just remember there being SO many 'dumb horror movie victim' tropes that made it so unbelievable. Maybe I'm remembering it poorly.

I haven't seen the original (or this one) in full, but the "Because you were home" is effective and chilling as fuck. Especially because there have been real cases where, when a killer is asked "why?" later in interrogations, they have straight up said "Because the door was unlocked" or something. It's very disturbing. Edit: Good video as usual, and it sounds like they made the right choice with the ending, giving a somewhat happy ending (especially since it departs from the original there).

you are joking right? this is the worst sequel ever, the acting is ass, looks like a TV show most of the time and the set is boring to watch for most of the movie until- WOW NEON LIGHTS!

Worst: in my opinion the grudge the newest American version and TCM Netflix edition. The best: that's hard. 28 weeks later comes to mind but im sure I'll see better mentions

I had been meaning to watch Prey at Night since it first came out but it never quite got the priority of other movies. When I saw this video, I went over to Netflix and watched it before coming back here. I was so pleasantly surprised. It's by no means a game-changer, but it's a solidly made movie and I found myself engrossed. I actually cheered as the siblings took down the strangers one by one. My only nitpick is when Kinsey investigates the jack-in-the-box instead of noping out of there. She was well aware by that point that the only other people in the area were murderers. BUT other than that, the set pieces were delightful and I liked that the killers each had a clear personality and method of murder, though I thought we could have used a bit more of the pin-up girl. Thanks for getting me to finally watch this movie!

These immersive, hyperrealistic horror films always do something to me. When they're well done I feel anxious and uncomfortable the entire time. Great video. I'd love to see you make a video on In The Tall Grass. I thought it was an incredible film. If you haven't seen it, make sure you have the best quality audio possible with 3D audio. The sound design is absolutely absurd.

“Prey at Night" can be summed up in one sequence, namely when Stalker #1 rams Nihilist Teen Daugters' car from behind, and she then proceeds to slam her head into the steering wheel. Those physics require a different level of suspension of disbelief.

The pool scene is definitely one of my favorite in slasher history. Just an underrated film all together

The creepy and disturbing tone of the first movie is mostly absent in the second. The second one seems to have a lot more fun, though! I prefer the sequel, and I LOVE the unexpectedly satisfying moments.

I found it quite boring. As for it being better than original I'm not sure, it is certainly funnier than The Strangers. It being a Friday night, itch curing film is a good way to describe this movie but in my opinion the stupidness factor puts me off. It reminded me of the aforementioned Texas Chainsaw but while that at least had some interesting affects, kills, funnier moments and presentation this was far to bland for me. Both films are quite unscary for me, the design of the killers, not the concept, seem a bit silly sometimes. Maybe the masks are my problem, as I think though they are iconic in their own way they're also pretty generic, not that, that is inherently bad but it definitely lets them down in this case. In terms of if it scratches that itch, I think films like ones you've covered already fit that better. Say for example The Collector or Creep.

The Strangers Prey At Night isn’t the best film out there, but it holds a special place in my heart because it got me into both 80’s music and horror movies. It definitely is very important for me

I think it’s a great movie. I remember being bummed Liv wasn’t coming back and it was like a new cast and different place and all. It felt to me like it was gonna come off like those terrible straight to DVD sequels. I saw some reviews were bad before it came out , but being big fan of the first I still wanted to watch it. I bought my ticket and went to the theater and I was surprised on how good it was. I was enjoying but I’ll admit it’s the pool scene where I said “okay yeah I’m buying this when it comes out” it’s not only the musics but the performance and the characters fight back out of rage of what happen to them and on top of that the beautiful cinematography to it. Love it. Maybe not a total masterpiece but it is good and my money’s worth.

i watched this movie not knowing anything about the 1st one. I just put it on, thinking it would be a casuel thriller movie. I dont think i thought of it as anything special. I kind of wished we got a little more backstory on who the strangers were. I think if hollywood wants to make a film just to pass the time, they shouldnt do it by making a sequel or remake. Just have an original idea. That is the main thing lacking nowadays; originality. Everything is a reboot, remake, or unnecessary sequel and original ideas get shut down

Black Sheep Dead Calm Razorback Angel Heart Yep, I will continue to suggest these until I die. Also on a more light-hearted tone; Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frakensein, from Andy Warhol, yes, that Andy Warhol, and are fabulously weird movies where the 'hero' saves a virgin from Dracula...by raping her...yep, that happened.

Ryan Hollinger never has to worry about home invaders. A good old "HOYEVER" will keep them out.
