I've always loved how the effects looked in this movie. Not only do they strike the good balance of cgi and practical when it counts, but they fully embrace how bloody gruesome and ridiculous they wanted to get with its scenes. My favourites will always be the fat woman and the bathtub scene when the girl finds her family turned, only to end on the visual of the slugs shadows blocking up the car window into darkness. Visually impressive and highly underlooked in my opinion.

Though you can still tell that this is the same guy who did GOTG. Even if the violence is way tone down, the GOTG still has some pretty grim stuff into within the realms of PG-13. Like the scene in vol 2 where they cut upon Abilisk and gore and guts fell out. But because it isn't red and the guts doesn't look that real, it get's away with PG-13. And the oddball sense of humor that sometimes puts you through uncomfortable terrortiy is also still there. I haven't seen The suicide squad yet but from the clips I've seen, it really seems like it's Gunn going back to his roots while still having the maturity he learned from working with GOTG.

My friend actually screened movies for me and would tell me when the scary things would happen and also what they were if it was important to the plot so that I could look away and cover my ears if I wanted to. Getting older and a little braver helped, but I still looked away a lot. When I saw this movie with my siblings, I couldn't look away and the comedy kept my mood light enough that I never felt overwhelmed by the horror aspects. This movie as well as Shaun of the Dead helped me appreciate horror more. Granted Shaun of the Dead is very much more of a comedy than horror, but it cured my crippling fear of zombies.

I watched this when I was like 13 or something and boy did I not know how to feel about it at the time, but something about it felt right. Glad you talked about it.

Saw parts of it when I was younger cause my brother was watching it, I blame this movie for how squeamish I can be sometimes.

My parents actually rented it from the video store the year it came out for a movie night back when I was little and i decided to watch it with them and it scarred me for the longest time Specifically that tentacle monster thing and the scene where the police open up the barn to find that one chick all swollen. I remembered those two things specifically.

I remember Slither being on MTV all the time when I was a kid. The bathtub scene was the reason I couldn’t watch the whole movie for years and the dvd cover didn’t let me forget it lmao

Imagine being a kid and having nightmare of this movie. And your parents are watching the movie while you're having a nightmare, making it ten times worse. that was me.

I remember finding this movie when I was about 13, probably one of my favorite horror movies ever. It was by far the weirdest thing I had ever watched at that point. It's awesome to see it getting some love, especially on your channel. Awesome video as always dude!

I remember not liking this movie very much when I was like 15 or so - I think I didn't really "get" it. I may need to give it a re-watch some time though. This was such an interesting video going through Gunn's cinematic history. Particularly your note about how this is where Kevin Smith COULD HAVE gone. That's kind of really true I think. Where, I like Kevin Smith a lot as a speaker, I don't really love him as a filmmaker. But with Gunn's projects like obviously Guardians, his silly early work on Scooby Doo and in the subverting-expection Super I definitely think he's a filmmaker I'd like to explore a bit more in

never realized the perspective shift, but now that its put into words, it may be why I love the pacing and escalation of this movie! Also, another way he really humanizes his characters: he often writes small glimpses into the real tragedy of his characters; the fact that Grant Grant (and to some extent margaret) is fully aware of what is happening, but just can't help himself is REALLY unsettling. and also kinda more in line with real parasite induced behavioural changes, so kudos there. or the moment in super, where Frank just sits on the bed bawling his eyes out in self loathing. I also love that for the absurdity of that movie, the damage from violence is so very grounded, making Frank that much more of a terrible and tragic character; when he clobbers the line-cutter and the way the blood first trickles than flows; Chef's kiss. I would love an analysis on that one actually, bit of an undernoticed cult gem.
