Amazing and heartwarming documentary about the special residents in the little village Botton within the North York Moors National Park in North Yorkshire, England.
Botton was founded in 1955 on the initiative of the Camphill community in Scotland and initial direction of Peter Roth. It was the first organisation of its kind within the anthroposophical social therapeutic work specifically for people with disability after they reached adulthood.

I live just an hour away from Botton and since the 1980s have visited several times on their annual open days, which have always been held on the first Sunday in July. Highlights for me were learning about their biodynamic growing practice, a beautiful piano recital from a Ukrainian pianist, traditional afternoon tea in the garden of one of the farmhouses, a delicious lunch at the café, and, best of all, a display of Eurythmics dancing. I always wanted to stay, it's such a beautiful place. I hope the open days continue but see there are ways to connect with Botton and to support the Camphill Trust online. Thanks so much for the documentary!

I like the guy who seems infatuated with announcing the time regularly and even celebrates the passing of the (Friday) morning... right at noon... by running around shaking everyone’s hand as if they accomplished something together! Reminds me of another guy I sort of knew from my early years in trucking. He lived alone just outside of a medium size city and had himself a fairly powerful cb radio base station. About every 15 minutes he’d call out his cb handle and then announce the time, as if it was his lone responsibility! He would never carry on any conversations or offer anything else like weather reports or directions, just the time! Didn’t matter what time of day or night... as I got near that city I’d always hear him faithfully, and usually thanklessly, giving everyone on channel 19 an unprompted time check!

I bet 5 minutes dealing with Anthony and you'd wanna lose it. The job is full of shit like that the way you deal with it is the issue. You gotta be ready to be impatient with these people the trick is not getting angry at then for it.

We had a place like that in California during the 60's. It was called Camarillo, and it had restaurants and movie theaters, and it was home to over ten thousand people with mental disabilities, schizophrenia, various psychosis, and IT WORKED. It was like this place, and people had dignity. Now they live on the streets, and eat out of dumpsters, and the only psychiatric treatment they receive is the county jail. It cost half a billion dollars a year, but they were our people, our sons and daughters, our friends, our parents, and Ronald Reagan closed it. He thought the money would be better spent on tax breaks for billionaires.

Hopefully it wasn’t an issue similar to the twin girls a few decades back who became so intertwined with each other they almost destroyed themselves as well as sat a few places on fire. I believe they always said one of them needs to die so the other can live. They were both committed to mental health facility for their crimes. When one of them did die however, the other miraculously made a complete mental 180, and was able to be discharged back into society and lived a productive life afterwards. It could’ve been foile a duex (shared madness), or a case where certain disorders are genetic. For many, separation, though sad, can actually be beneficial. In other scenarios, it could’ve been logistics (room at one facility for one person but not two at that time), different severity levels requiring different environments, or maybe his twin does better somewhere with even more structure, while Barry likes a bit more independence.

honestly, I got the impression he might have been just literally plucked out of the place and into another timeline by a fifth dimensional wrinkle in time-space. The way he was speaking. As if he did know, just couldn’t articulate it. because we don’t actually have language for such things. He did say it was out of the blue. On the other hand, he said he “wasn’t there” for the actual escape, ( left his body during it? ) which again leads me back to the wrinkle...theory. I found this documentary strangely comforting. Authentic.

The reason no Brit here has heard of the place is because that's how the mentally disabled are treated in every country from what I can see. They shouldn't be called The Villagers. They should be called The Unmentioned. Still it's a fantastic idea and the right thing to do. Community based living, at least they're all on the same level and looked after. No one taking the piss out of them or taking advantage. You'd need the patience of a saint and all the props go to the staff. Where would they be without this support? I think it's fascinating to watch.

There are so many absolute gems in this. John's "No, not really!" is up there. The documentary maker knew! We all knew! I wonder if her and the cameraman laughed after that as well. The two lads talking about the doors opening and "Your majesty! Doors close. Psssshhhht! click click!" - I could have watched much more of them. Fascinating friendship. But Barry pips it - what a star! Am so glad he's making it in Whitby. From his elegant tapestry of poetic musings to setting fashion styles in walking; the guy's a star. "IT's a story, the best you've ever heard, the best anyone has ever heard; you wouldn't believe it. It'd be in the Guinness Book of Records, the story of how I escaped from Winson Green prison..." "What is it?" "I don't know - just happened!" The characters are so endearing and had me in stitches. I suppose if you don't have family to look after you, or can't look after you, this is a much better alternative to sheltered housing. There should be many, many more of these villages. They say you can judge a country by how they treat their prisoners; the same can be said about how we treat our vulnerable

According to several websites, Botton was laid out by its founder, an Austrian refugee who created the community's prototype in Scotland in 1939, based on the be-nice-to-each-other-we're-all-equal principles of philosopher Rudolf Steiner. There're, per what I read, 120 Camphill communities across the world, and Botton is seen as their flagship, with a total population of 280 people who live, work, eat, and sleep as families.

People need purpose to exist and its up to the individual to find out what will meet that necessity. We don't just need food and shelter, that applies to these people too. I visited a similar community, in a different country. It was also named Camphill and run on the principles of Rudolph Steiner. The community consisted of families and adults with learning difficulties. It was totally self sufficient. The children attended a Steiner Waldorf school. My only concern was that one of it's recent arrivals was a boy, in his late teens, who was sent there by his parents when they discovered he was sexually abusing his sisters. He had obvious learning difficulties and his family were avid Steiner supporters. When I questioned the safety of the young girls in his host family, they assured me that he was safe. Otherwise, I really admired how the community farmed all their fruit & veg, ran a bakery, had very efficient workshops and there were no televisions in sight. They sold much of their produce in nearby towns and cities and offered paid accommodation to families who wished to spend time there, as I did.

This is an eventuality of doing absolutely everything from a smartphone. They don't screw each other over for profit, partners, or other stupid reasons like many of the so-called 'normal' people They live simply and are happy You couldn't ask more any more than that

OMGosh Pamela is a karen! I would love to know Barry's back story he is a fascinating character, a deep thinker, and very brave to take on a new adventure. As for Pam she is that co-worker that every body dreads.

I wonder what happened to Barry. He has an underlying intelligence about him.

Yeah, I'd like an update. I wonder if there's a mental illness as well as a learning disability there. Sometimes he speaks really lucidly and is quite insightful. Other times his disability comes to the fore and you see clearly how difficult it would be for him without a lot of support. I'd like to know how much help he got when he moved out, if he had any place to go to fill his day etc. He was a likeable guy.

@@littleboots9800 That is what I wanted to say but you are more intelligent than me lol I wondered the same. Perhaps he didnt have the best childhood? I would have liked them to talk to him more, he seemed the type that would thrive around other people that include him in conversation, so is he doing OK now? Did he leave? Who knows.

@@BLane-xr1ic Yeah, I felt he needed company and stuff to do to give him purpose. I think he underestimated how much he needed other people around him for company more than anything. With the right help he could have thrived, but after so many years at Brotton it was going to be a big adjustment. Miserable looking place he had too compared to before😕 I saw a commenter saying he lives in Whitby too and has seen him around still but I don't know if that true. I hope he's OK. And I'm not more intelligent than you!

@Nenethegreat W he was diagnosed with a learning disability wasn't he? If there's nothing wrong with him how is it that he doesn't have the requisite skills to survive on his own?
