The Strangford Stone, Delamont

The Strangford Stone is the tallest modern megalith in the British Isles, standing at over 10 metres tall.
On 26th June, 1999, over 1000 young people came together to pull this stone into its current attitude.
The 47 ton stone was manually hewn from the Mourne Mountains, using the traditional method of plugs and feathers, from a rock over 200 tonnes in weight.
Carved into the stone are the precise positions of the 4 inner planets of the solar system on 26th June, 1999.
The stone brought together young people from all walks of life, and was seen as a monument to a future of peace in Northern Ireland.
Situated on the shores of Strangford Lough, the stone faces south to the mountain of Slieve Donard, its birthplace.
Flight details: it was a most miserable day with the threat of rain, poor visibility and very cold. Unfortunately, I was not able to see the Mourne Mountains due to the weather, maybe next time.
