Another Superb video filled with history and pipe smoking. I love history. Growing up I wanted to be a history teacher or professor but life takes us through many twist and turns. One day I will travel to your part of the world to see the beauty it holds. I know it takes you time and money to make these adventures but know that there is a lot of us out here that appreciate and love each and every video you post. Great job

I don’t know if you remember me but I commented way back on a video of yours asking about meerschaum and how you know if it’s block. Since I have bought a pretty big bearded man block meer made in turkey CAO, and have been smoking it every other day, it’s coloring a nice yellow as I smoke lots of burley and Virginias. Now I have bought a very nice made in turkey block meer church warden pipe! You have introduced me to the meerschaum world, and have not smoked my briars once since. I watch your videos every day even if I’ve already seen them all more than once, I watch them while I eat on my break and when I got time! Thank you for posting the great content my friend. Hope you read this in good health with some good blends in your pipe. Hope to hear from you soon, my friend.

Mark, you are a great narrator of our history. Maybe it is a good idea to write the "real story" of this rare case from Lower Saxony. I have´nt heard anything about this exciting case, even though I'm from Lower Saxony. Thank you for talk about this friend. I am a big friend of history and have a big library with many exciting works. The HU LB is a very good tobacco like most other tobaccos from HU. I like it too. Sunny greaeings from our island. I love how you always make interesting, knowledgeable, informative videos, that often include other topics than tobacco alone. There are quite a few, excluding names, who churn videos out at an omnipotent rate, thusly, becoming ponderous and insipid; perpetual 'box opening' videos; even if their latest YABO contains only one pipe cleaner ;) But yours are always educational, well thought and composed, with a splash of good wit! Bravo, my friend; many 'presenters' could learn from you :) Steve

Hi Mark. What a great video and a wonderful story! Thank you for 40 interesting minutes with your great looking Meerschaum. I am not a huge Perique-Fan, thus I smoke only the English forward tobaccos from HU, but they are hard to get here in Switzerland. In two weeks I will spend some days in Ahlen NRW, where my girlfriend comes from and than I will order some of the newer HU tobaccos. Have a good time with your pipes and enjoy the tobaccos and I really looking forward seeing you here on youtube. Cheers from Zurich, Armin

Hi Mark. Sorry for the delay. Unfortunately, I have no idea what Mr. Wagner will do regarding the replacement of McClelland tobaccos. He only said that he has some ideas, that‘s it. If I am there the next time, I will ask him and let you know. Regarding C&D, there is Roman Peter at Affoltern am Albis where you can buy these tobaccos. Thus, I don‘t think that the Tabaklädeli will gonna go with C&D, but maybe I am wrong. Have a good time and cheers, Armin

Hey Mark: that story has to be right up there with the Ascanian Castle story as one of your best, very interesting the possible connection between the new currency issuance and the mysteriously large numbers of animals slain by just one wolf. As I have mentioned to you before, the bookstore and library shelves over here are heavily weighted to German history from about 1900 to 1945 but there are so many fascinating stories such as the Strangler of Lichtenmoore and many of the stories of centuries past that go unnoticed, a pity so thanks for cranking these tales out . They are greatly appreciated You know the wolf is a protected species in the U.S. as well but exactly the same controversy exists between the ranchers and the city folks concerning the release of wolves into the wilds of states like Montana and Idaho where there have been incidents of wolves raiding ranch areas for fresh meat. I guess these issues permeate all cultures and nationalities, only the language changes. By the way, speaking of HU tobaccos, they are some of the best quality blends I have smoked. Keep puffin.

Hello Mark...another great video, and interesting story about the wolf. It seems a bit suspicious to me as well, ....as there would be evidence of the animals being eaten -- since wolves don't normally kill for sport but for food. As for the tobacco,... Louisiana Broken..., I have had a sample bowl last year from Wolfgang but don't remember it much, ...same with Nashville County. I meant to get back to you on Voxer about that before you sent off the pipe, but time got away from me, ....sorry for that. Perhaps I will try it again at some point, maybe even get a tin of each as I've heard so many good things regarding these tobaccos. Take care my friend, and I will get back to soon... Corey

Thanks, Mark, for the suggestion of the HU brand; I've never tried them....You have very strong teeth, apparently...a good demonstration of the strength of meerschaum pipes! Thinking back, over the misty span of time, I seem to recall a legend that a wolf is immediately repelled by the smell of tobacco smoke - especially that of a pipe. I watched this video with fascination and great interest. At no point, did I detect the presence of a wolf anywhere in your vicinity. This leads me to conclude that the legend must be true! Cheers!

As a french guy it kinda reminded me of the beast of Gévaudan. They never really catched the culprit...they said it was a wolf and one man shot him but it is subject to discussions as apparently the wolf just stood in front of the hunter and waited to be shot in a certain way as if he knew who was in front of him (his master). Interesting as always and I'm almost 4 years late but hey, better later than never!

Great entertainment + tobacco review! If you had not revealed that you are a historian by profession, I might have asked if you were in a German counterpart of MI 5 or the like. The story is interesting in that forests and wolves seem to go together. Even so, you wove an interesting tale especially since the accusation was made that the forest was inhabited by a "strangler" ... a term more likely assigned to a "higher" species e.g. humankind. Thanks for the venture & story. I enjoyed it! John

Hi Mark - great story and analysis of every nuance as ever! There was some talk about reintroducing the wolf in the Scottish Highlands some years ago to keep the deer population down but nothing came of it. So no 21st Century wolf stories for us! Hey Paul! Thank you so much for taking the time...and very interesting comment! Yeah...I think, there might be even fewer wolves, swimming across the channel, than using knifes, to skin sheep...lol On the other hand...one could imagine, a nobleman, bringing wolves or even tigers to the Highlands...for a unique hunting experience... :-) I heard, that there is a plate in Oxford University, that forbids, to bring dogs...and bears...for good reasons... :-) Take care! Thoroughly enjoyed your story and all your effort to travel to and find the actual setting and stone marker. Thrilling! I heard that the two German officers that brought the wolf pup back from Russia were eaten by the wolf in the course of its escape from captivity. Any truth to that?

Thanks for taking the time...and most kind words! Well...never heard of that...and it would be well known, if that would have happened...even the story about the soldiers itself is more a myth than historical truth... Take care! Be well! Mark

Really interesting tale and great video! I like the alternative view on the story, pretty interesting that the story is taken as gospel in the curriculum. My home area in Cumbria, England is the site of our own Last Wolf Story though many areas lay claim to the honour. lol I was actually going to joke that you left ur tobacco before your final gag! have a good week Mark!

Hi Mark, When I read the title of the video, I first thought it was about a serial killer, but it's just about a poor wolf. In my opinion, it`s a really funny story... but at the end, not for the wolf. During my schooldays there were also a few legends about our region told, especially about the "Goldberg". And as the name implies, there should be a lot of gold there. Nobody has found it yet. There is a Geocache at that pillar, the coordinates are N 52° 43.965 E 009° 28.743. I think, your position in the map is maybe wrong. Enjoy your pipe and have a nice day. See you next time. Andreas

Ahhh ja, Bremen! Freue mich immer darauf, dich in deinen Videos zu sehen! Außerdem liebe ich Geschichte und alte Gebäude. Die Geschichten, die du erzählst, sind faszinierend! Schöne Pfeife und Tabak! Alles Gute, mein Freund. Bis zum nächsten Mal... Ich mag auch die "statischen" Änderungen in deinen Videos! Ich weiß nicht, welche Software du dafür benutzt.

What a great story !!! works well with that pipe and the tobaco you chose. What would you have thought if the tobaco was gone when you came back for it.

Later in your story, you spoke of the reintroduction of the wolf in certain areas, and local populations coversation concerning this.. I live in New York State, ( just south of the border 10 miles) below Montreal. This area is known as the Great Adirondack Park, linking the Appalachian Mtn. Ridge north. The Park is millions of acres, and 100's of miles in diameter. They began introducing the wolf back into this area sometime ago(maybe15 yrs?? about), and a big controversy ensued with the public .........yes or no?....should the wolf be brought back?? It was brought back into the area and without problems. My Point is this....we are so many miles apart and yet basic human instinct prevails questioning the reintroduction and coexistence of a wild animal within their backyards. I am sure the local conversation and meetings resembled each other in dialog. Another Great Story from you !!!

Mark, do certain tobacco’s have more nicotine than others? I enjoy Latakia, but not sure of its nicotine content? Anyway, obviously a new pipe smoker here - great videos very enjoyable.

The debate about wolf is hard and with the same front between urban and rural people in Norway to. I blame the Grimm brothers and Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf for some the bad reputation wolf’s have. The have not been any person taken by wolfs for over 200 years in Norway, but people is still afraid. I understand that the farmers that lost a lot of sheeps and the hunters that lost their hunting dogs don’t want any wolf’s around.
