This place blows my mind. Great video BTW.

Jack has discussed potential issues with the sonar readings due to air bubbles. It’s likely to be closer to 20mtrs, but hopefully he will be able to get the dive team approved next year and we will find out for sure.

I visited myself and measured the depth the old-fashioned way. It's nowhere those depths. There's a sign saying the gorge is 9 metres deep as well. I also separate fact from myth. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6almX13iauibdE

He recently went back with a new sonar device and tested again. The new readings seemed to confirm the earlier numbers.

If you think about it: Compare the width of the river before and after. Then the width of The Strid. The river turns over 90 degrees and is as deep as it was wide higher up. All that churning adds a lot of air to the water which means ANYTHING that falls in sinks immediately. No buoyancy whatsoever.

By the 'waterfall' anything falling in would make a hole in the water - zero buoyancy. Further on, the current just a few feet down would pull a victim down. Instinctively, I always knew there was something dangerous.

And this is how the mythos spreads. Someone measured it with troublesome equipment and another brick is added to the wall, this one stating it's 200 feet deep. Jack himself is now doubtful of his own measurements, but the 200ft thing will hang around for a while now. It even got into some papers, which will lead to a cycle of citation and authority as countless people try to outdo how dangerous they can make the Strid sound. The "100% fatality" stat is a good example, it's impossible to verify such a claim but it gets stated as fact endlessly. It's about 30 feet at most.

Yup, less than half a dozen recorded instances of people falling into the Strid, all of them did drown I have to mention, but 5 or 6 people is hardly a reliable sized sample group. And on top of that, many if not all of them fell in while fully clothed, making it even harder to swim, and at least 2 or 3 of them happened very long ago when most people couldn't even swim yet. As to the depth of the Strid, 25-30 meters is much more likely, the incredibly high aeration of the water will cause unreliable sonar readings because all those millions of bubbles drastically lower the water's density.

Yes, the measurement is done with sonar in turbulent air filled water. Sound travels at 1500m/s in water but only 340m/s in air. So if the sound has to travel to lots of air it will look WAY deeper than it actually is. So this is a case of not truly understanding the technology he was using to measure the depth.

Great video and follow up to Jack's video pointing out the parts where the measurments were taken ,I can understand the areas now better. You are obviously not a tourist just passing through doing another strid video but someone with an interest in it as well. This is one of my favorite strid videos ,good job.

Yes, its possibly 'safe' until you get a foot below the surface then things get interesting.

It's not that deep. Scuba diver in the 70s says its about 4m by the waterfall more or less. The lad didn't take into account that sonar uses sound to measure depth and sound travels 1500m/s in water but only 340m/s in air. Ie, if you have very turbulent air filled water like this it will look WAY deeper on sonar than it is due to that fact. It is very deep, but 4-10 meters.

Has anyone come across this "scuba diver" by name? So far people have claimed a variety of things like having previously dived there, but I never see any historical context with proof of anyone's name who actually did the dive.

It’s not as deep as they say. It’s 15ft deep apparently but equally dangerous.
