Welcome to "The Strokes Week" on Tiny TV. This is the full interview with Julian Casablancas and Albert Hammond Jr.
Please do consider subscribing if you like the content on Tiny TV.
In this interview I talk to ‪@thestrokes‬ about their Grammy Award winning album "The New Abnormal" and how it was working with Rick Rubin. We also discuss the 20th anniversary of their debut album "Is This It" and joke around the fact that The Strokes "stole" tunes from both Tom Petty and Billy Idol.
I interviewed @The Strokes back in November 2020. It was a Zoom call between me (Copenhagen, Denmark), Julian (N.Y. hotelroom) and Albert (at home in L.A.). The internet connections could have been better but we managed to have some great moments together 🖤🔥🎸
Thank you for watching Tiny TV.

I think Rick's final decision to crystallize the vocals is what makes this record so poignant. I love a flowery riff or guitar solo as much as the next person but Julian's unique voice seems to carry the weight of his emotions and you could hear it in his singing on this record and it added so much depth. And you totallyyy see where his proclivity to use vocals more instrumentally show up in his Voidz stuff. Human sadness exemplifies that pretty well. anywayyyyyy love TNA and the strokes foreverandeverandeverrrr

I agree 100%, New Abnormal would’ve just been a totally different album from what it’s now if they decided to go with heavy effects on the vocal.

There's value to melting the vocals along with the rest of the instruments. That was Julian's point. A simple chord isn't just one note. It's cooler to create 'harmony balls'. Like in cooking, you can push the quality of something by melting familiar things into something totally unique and flavorful.
@GP-jo8gw
@GP-jo8gw 2 жыл бұрын
@@sayitsjose Sure, I can agree with that. And I understand why he likes to use his voice to underscore melodies. I was just expressing how I liked that with this album, they chose not to do that + I love Julian's quite singular voice. As a musician, you inevitably experiment with your sound, and this album is just an example of that and their ever-changing range.

I'd love an interview with Julian talking about music and politics, and just about everything he wants to talk about. He is such an incredibly sharp individual with so much depth to his perspective, and I feel like any interview with him I've ever watched just barely scratches the surface. He feels like someone you'd want to hang out with for hours and just talk and talk and talk.

I agree, but sometimes I feel like he holds back what he’s really saying. I assume he’s very introverted off camera and away from music. And it also depends on the interviewer and the questions, I think. But, I do believe he would be an amazing conversationalist in a deeper sense.

I agree that the voice is an instrument, and within the context of this album, I believe that this instrument was used effectively. If julian’s vocals were lowered and “blended” more into the overall painting, his words would be hidin’ in the background but they want to be found
@ego6342
@ego6342 3 жыл бұрын
Elton John once said that he liked blending the vocals with the rest of the instruments so that the melody would catch the listeners attention and cause them to go and read the lyrics. So the message gets acrossed. Your not going to understand every lyric on most songs on Tyranny, so most likely you are going to read them after the first listen.

This is an interview _not_ to be missed for anyone who is a fan of Julian Casablancas or The Strokes. As someone who has been a huge fan of Julian's voice & The Strokes since I first heard Last Night when I was in 7th grade (& then later a fan of The Voidz, naturally), Anders really asked the kind of questions I've always wondered about. His questions opened the door for Julian to answer things I've always wondered about not only with this album, but as a whole - Julian as a creative being & his personal perspective behind his artistic process. I too have always seen the voice as an instrument & it was _very_ cool to hear Julian dive deeper into explaining how he uses his voice as part of the sum of the whole, as it was to hear Albert's perspective & experience. Julian has such an incredibly unique, beautiful, distinct voice & style that is entirely, _entirely_ his own & I've often wondered his process in opting for tech that alters it (especially in The Voidz). There were some very "intimate" things shared, the kind of things artists just "do" but don't articulate outside of their minds, the kinds of things that are really only observed in a studio. Honestly, I feel really fortunate to have found this interview & the opportunity to listen in. Such a great interview! Thank you Anders! And thank you to Julian & Albert of course 💚

Julian "side A is better and I'd have had the vocals lower" you don't usually hear an artist talk about their record in these ways ahaha. I like the loudness of the vocals so I think Rubin was right, but Rubin should listen to his artists in my opinion. Side B is also genuinely better for me on this record.

Surely some might pout about the absence of 🤘🏾songs, but I can hear em on their other albums, and respect their artistic revolution. I'm 2 yrs late to this conversation about vocals, but as I watched it again yesterday it was fresh in my mind, He-War by Cat Power just came up on a playlist for me, and it reminded me of what Julian said about the vocal on "Young Turks" by Rod Stewart ie that it's lower, blended in the mix but you can still understand and hear the words. I like more how Cat Power does it here, He-War kzbin.info/www/bejne/eH7bm5SvmpynhLs plus the killer guitar riff and Dave Grohl's excellent drumming. Plus I like songs where Julian sings along with the guitar part. His voice is definitely like an amazing instrument, how he can go so low and so high in falsetto and still not put me off when I usually hate it when blokes sing in falsetto, but he goes in and out of it for the benefit of the song and brings light and shade, plus he can really carry the pretty tune when he does it. I still love it when he growls/screams tho, like he does in 50/50 (I got that stuck in my head today "I will say! I will say, don't judge me!" - I'd like to shout that at a few ppl! 😄) Great interview, I really like it when the interviewer asks more intelligent questions about the musical process so the interviewee is more interested and inclined to give deeper answers like Julian did here. 👍

Thank you SO much Pierre. And yes, you are absolutely right: I was VERY anxious and nervous from the beginning of the interview :-) Especially because Julian and Albert are so playful and like to prank journalist a bit. But all in all I'm quite happy with the end result. So thank your for watching Tiny TV and for taking the time to comment :-D

Rick Rubin actually did this album a disservice...I love it because everything they make is gorgeous but I think Julians points are fitting. It's nice to hear different avenues of sound from them (the strokes) but they need to stay true to their hearts. Rationale: All of the live performances of TNA songs are much better. The adults are talking on SNL, ode to the mets at Barlays stadium in NYC, the adults are talking with the "ARE YOU NOT NOT ENTERTAINED?" ending...all these raw/non-tampered are more raw and sexier...Not isolated and cleaned up like on the studio versions.

I've watched this interview over a dozen times and each time I notice something different that calls to me...this time it's how elegant Julian has put his words together to somehow taunt the muse within me, remember "never interview these two together...uhh ahhh mmhh" to his last statement in this interview, I wish there were some way to describe what will come to pass when we do finally encounter one another without me sounding like a "psychotic girl" (black keys) however there's no way around it either you'll appreciate my certainty or simply assume this to be a rant from yet another groupie to terrorize, or meet u at the bottom, living proof that even woman of culture and intellect idolize musicians...false,break!

I don't idolize Jules or any of the members of both bands rather I see them as equals in the real. Of consciousness yet so far away in terms of class seperation and my shortcomings have become so vast and common that I've began to alienate those nearest me whom I love so dear let alone those far from me that I know will experience a new level of transcendence as a species It's two memory complexes reuniting for the first time in human history, of course these two Ra and Nu have been together before just never in humans time here on earth.....Psychotic Girl may be an understatement

Disagree. I think following the trend of clear and loud vocals will label them more of a pop band than a rock band. Just because it's new and fresh doesn't mean that everyone should do it.

Why do non-musicians insist on the vocals being the most important quality of a song? If his voice was the most important aspect of The Strokes music, then what about his solo work and side projects? Why are they so crappy compared to the strokes? There’s NO SUCH THING as a sound that’s more “important” than another
