The Rogue 32MM Squat Bar is the thickest, stiffest, and strongest barbell that Rogue Fitness currently manufactures. It's designed for those with 1,000 LB+ squats like Powerlifter Ray Williams. Today, I give my opinion on the bar, discuss what makes it different, and compare it to some of it's competition. Enjoy!

Just some food for thought from my perspective as a long time coach and decent squatter myself and someone who owns the bar. I think the bar is trash. If you’re not immobile like the guys shown and don’t use an extremely wide grip it whips a ton. It is not stiff regardless of the thickness due to the length of the bar and displacement of the weight out to the sides. The OPB has significantly less whip even in a rack. Because lifters like the one shown have a wide grip their arms support it out to the sides more so it whips less on them but even still the clip shown with just 540 you can see it’s bending. It also whips more than a Texas squat bar, I have a video showing this. I wish rogue would actually ask strong people how to design a bar. Their OPB is the only decent bar. Their deadlift bar is trash and the squat bar is worse than it’s counter parts from Texas and kabuki minus it does have a full knurl unlike Texas but still more whip and more spin. I don’t mean hate but 540 is like a usapl junior 83kg class squat you just won’t notice much at that weight and his bodyweight. To me a specialty bar is used to mimic competition and to reap the benefits over more common place equipment. The Texas squat bar is used in most comps still and is decently different in its physical attributes. The collars spin less so it rolls less when you lose your hips, it’s stiffer, and the knurl is different so if trying to mimic competition equipment you won’t be in most cases. Likewise since the bar is actually more cumbersome due to its design you just wind up with maybe a slightly better than commercial gym bar. I have one and just maxed out at 640 using an ohio power bar instead all while I have my rogue squat bar listed to sell online. It’s significantly more difficult to control the whip and I most likely would have missed that attempt with the bar. I don’t mean to just come here and shoot all of this down I really do love your vids and constantly go to you and Brandon first for info but I just kinda get frustrated with rogue because they asked a guy who doesn’t even squat on a squat bar to do their promo work, that’s how out of touch they are

Hey Coop, just curious. Did you bother taking the snap rings off the end caps to see if the end cap is blank on the other side? I got my OPB from the boneyard, it came with a blank end cap as well. Took the snap rings off and was excited to find the OPB print on the other side.

I like the Ohio Power Bar, and I squat with an axle bar thickness cambered bar quite a bit. I think it’s useful as a variation but the whip isn’t holding people back at this weight. Yeah it sucks but that’s just making you stronger. You can squat with a knurled axle bar. I have almost as many bars as Coop. It gets ridiculous at some point.

I have the OPB and the Ohio deadlift bar. Both from the Boneyard. My 20kg OPB is one of the best bars for the cash. It's my daily driver. The deadlift bar is fun to play with but it's a different pull. You really need to pull the slack out. Unless you are pulling over 400 it doesn't do much. If you compete/plan to compete in a federation that uses it I would suggest it.

Coop and many others have done BB cleaning/maintain vids. Long story short you use a nylon brush to clean the chalk and dirt off, then apply some 3 in 1 oil to the bar with a rag to rub it in, allow it to sit for a while, then brush off and dry. Do that once a month or when needed and it will stay clean.

Yes and no. There are many variables. I’ll use my son as an example - he’s a 20 yo super heavyweight who squats over 700 raw and recently squatted 910 in single ply w/wraps. The benefit of a comp rack is that the j-hooks are smaller (both width and depth) and the uprights are also narrow. This makes unracking and the walkout easier. Better comp racks also allow you to bring in the uprights (one or both sides), which also helps the walk out. The downside is that you need at least 3 spotters and sometimes up to 5 spotters depending on the weight. And they need to be somewhat experienced. With a power rack, the upside is that with the safeties properly set (this is very important), you can get away with either 1 back spotter or no spotters at all - in fact, with my son’s 910 squat, it was in a Rogue Monster rack and he didn’t have any spotters (social distancing and all that). The downside? The j-hooks are typically wider and deeper and it’s easy to hit the side of the support structure on the walk out, unbalancing the weight on your back. My son did this about two weeks ago with 815, he had to re-rack, then hit the uprights again on the second walkout - it took him longer to stabilize the weight. With very heavy weights, the unstablized walk out increases the risk of losing control of the weight altogether and possibly needing to dump it. Also, walking out a heavy weight on a lesser power rack, if you hit the rack, causes the rack to sway quite a bit. It’s distracting and not confidence inspiring. There are some racks we won’t use for that reason. But there’s no magic weight were the need for spotters and safeties shouldn’t be used. I had a friend (84kg female) squat around 350 in single ply and wraps. No safeties and one back spotter. The back spotter was a heavyweight powerlifter who can squat/deadlift over 600lbs. Seems like it should have been enough. But on her way up, one of her wraps came loose and she lost the weight. The back spotter did a bad job trying to help - I believe because the way to help her recover was by reaching around under her arms and supporting her chest to pull her upright, but he didn’t want to do that because it wouldn’t be “appropriate”. I’ve saved my son in that exact way when he had an 800lb squat fold him over as he was coming up - no time to be shy about that. She ended up dumping the weight behind her and they were lucking she didn’t get injured and he didn’t get injured as the weight rolled towards him. The other difference between my son and my friend’s situation - we were in a power rack WITH safeties, so even if he lost the weight, it would have been okay. With my friend, they had no safeties. Safeties > bad back spotter. Note, this is true of benching too, and even more critical. TL;DR A power rack can be safer in some circumstances, but not always, and can create its own dangerous issues.

Safety Squat Bar is perfect for squatting , if you don't compete. No need to tax your shoulders when you don't have to. Dumbbells not only build more strength, but also target more muscles. Straight bars bust your shoulders and target less muscles. The NFL players use Swiss Bars for a reason
