I’m beginning to think that Gamefreak tends to favor fire starters. Hell, there are only two fire Pokémon in Sinnoh and one of them has a better movepool and typing. Then again, I love me some Charizard, Typhlosion, Blaziken, and Infernape. I do hope Typhlosion would get some much needed upgrades in Legends Arceus because if I have to be honest, his movepool can use some help.

The only Fire Starters that don't get much attention are Emboar and Delphox. Both are generally disliked and in Delphox's case, it doesn't help that it's in the same trio as the popular Greninja. Delphox is kind of overhated though, imo. I used to dislike it at first, but it grew on me.

Gen 2 - you can get magmar from the burn tower and use feraligator as a starter because he is so much serpirior Gen 4 (hgss)- you can get slugma before the 1st gym and he can take the champion by himself beacuse of his second type Gen 7- alolan maroak because of flare blitz with rock head ability. Gen 8(sw&sh)- colossal because he can learn move that can cover his weakness+ he is a tank pokemon

Typhlosion is my favorite pokemon so I'd agree that it's a indispensable part of any gen 2 playthrough to the point I hardly ever use one of my favorite water starters in Totodile. I recently played through White 2 again and found myself throwing my starter in the box and opting for a Vaporeon, Ampharos, and Arcanine base along side a Krokodile, Flygon, and Lucario

@Krooked I was using braviary too until I caught a vibrava and i wanted a dragon that can fly more than I wanted a normal flying type, Flygon works alot better with my team because I can run sandstorm triple battles with krook and Lucario. Actually it’s not that hard to get a fire stone in HeartGold and SoulSliver. All you have to do is go to the Pokéathlon, get 3000 points, and have the date set on Tuesday and that’s how you get a fire stone. It’s worth the wait because Arcanine is a life saver thanks to its Intimidate, Fire power, and good bulk.

@@UmbraStarWolf Ninetales is still usable with Vulpix getting Flamethrower at level 24 and Ninetales being able to learn Nasty Plot in Blackthorne with a Heart Scale. Granted, Extrasensory is needed to maximize coverage and for that Vulpix can't evolve until level 44, but I guess you could always run Will-O-Wisp or Confuse Ray in its place. Just miss out on coverage for Bruno, Koga and Janine.

@@UmbraStarWolf The thing with Arcanine and Ninetales is that they both have their ups and downs. Arcanine is a powerhouse but your stuck with growlithe until it can learn more powerful moves like crunch and flamethrower which do appear until after level 30 while Ninetales is can learn more powerful moves early in its level ups but lacks firepower. Either way, aside from Typhlosion they’re both practically the best Fire option in the games.

@@alexcox9400 Houndoom is actually a really great option if you don't use Infernape. Crunch/Dark Pulse are excellent against Psychic which is surprisingly common in Sinnoh, and Thunder Fang is particularly helpful against Team Galactic's Golbats. I haven't played the Gen 7 or 8 games yet but the fact that Platinum is the only game in which Houndoom actually matters is pretty sad.

I'd argue that just by Raw Power, in B/W, Darmanitan is the superior choice. Sheer Force Flare Blitz is absolutely busted, and it has a coverage of Rock Slide, Earthquake, and Hammer Arm.

Mystic I'm curious about your thoughts on Houndoom in Platinum. I used one in my Platinum playthrough when I picked Piplup and found it to be incredible. Now obviously Infernape is better, but Houndoom does hit pretty hard and you can get quite a lot of use out of it against Maylene (it's literally right there), Byron, Candice, Mars and Jupiter's super annoying Bronzors and Golbats in the Spear Pillar, Aaron, Lucian, and Cynthia's Roserade and Lucario.

i actually always love using Magmar early on in Gold/Silver. You can find one in burned tower after getting your 3rd badge and you can still teach him Thunderpunch and even Psychic later on. I was pissed Crystal Version moved him to Mt. Silver for no reason because I always liked using him against Jasmine, so if you wanted one before the game was beaten you had to hope to get a Magby from the Dizzy Punch egg

i feel like volcarona was done dirty in this list for b2w2 considering we get it in the early game, not only fully evolved but also ahead of the level curve. It start miles ahead anything else and only gets better with levels. And not only it murders the elite 4 like nothing else, it destroys iris' hydreigon. Theres a ton of rock types in the midgame but it has access to grass type coverage. Its perfect

I dominated with a fire type competitive team in Y, consisting of Arcanine, Charizard, Victini, Chandelure, Darmanitan, and Blaziken. I specialized in triple battles and my typical opening move was to send out Arcanine, Charizard, and Victini with Arcanine in the center, have him use Earthquake with Victini using protect, and depending on the situation Mega evolve Charizard into its Y variant for the drought ability. It almost always made for a devastating opening team that more than paved the way for my other half to clean up. And since Victini was only available via distribution event, most people underestimated it to deal with the other two monsters present. God I miss those days!

For platinum, I feel like Houndoom is the best choice. Platinum was actually the first time you were able to use Houndoom for your in game playthrough, since in the Johto games they aren’t available until the Kanto post game. Besides platinum, the only other game you can use Houndoom for your main playthrough is X version, not Y though since it’s a version exclusive. You can get it later in other games, but those are the only 2 games where toy can use it during the main story. Edit: apparently I was wrong. You can also get it in the safari zone in Ermerald, right before the 6th gym. So 3 games, still not a lot though.

Charizard is best in RB as well. It gets slash which is essentially a 140 BP move, earthquake, swords dance, and flamethrower earlier than Growlithe. There are almost no rock type or electric attacks used against him in the games and his quad resistance to grass makes him an even better choice against Erica. He also get an immunity to ground type moves where the other two are weak to them

you forgot magmar in the jouto games, which can be gotten at the burnt tower in ecruteak, now granted in crystal the only way to get it is to get Magby from the gift egg the daycare gives you, but even so 1 out of five games shouldn't dictate it being forgotten, heck when I played silver for the first time i used it to great effect, along side feraligtr and ampharos, the punching triad I called them since they each used and elemental punch move.

One of my favorite things about Cinderace is the one thing nobody bothers to mention much anymore: Court Change! Think about what that move implies for Trench Warfare, which was a common part of World War I&II, what happens when the land mines and barbed wire are shifted around like one of those carnival games with the coconut shells? For SS, I'd argue that the DLC option of using Fire Type Legendaries is better than Libero Cinderace. You can immediately go to the Tundra, and you don't have to win against Peony, you can lose and the game continues without sending you back to a pokemon center! Meaning you can start the game, do the little bit of story progression, and then go catch a Reshiram or Ho-oh!

Charizard is actually good in Kanto. His Slash attack is really good against Sabrina. If you give him carbos the crit rate raises tremendously and since Alakazam and her pokes are not physical tanks, this is great. Char speed is good when you face her making the battle very much given. I Charizard is better for Nuzlocke but Arcanine gets better if you could catch in this style Also, also... Where you can catch Magmar in Kanto and which version... The same for Jinx... I never found them in the wild or anyone mentioned them besides Lorelei and Blaine in Yellow. About FRLG: Charizard is better since if you want the best moves for Arcanine you need to wait until lv 50. Vulpix is good for Confuse Ray and Fire Spin early on but not for Kanto, its better in Hoeen I should say.

It's actually not as hard to get a Fire Stone in HGSS as you said it was. My reasoning is the Pokéathlon which you can get it after you beat Whitney and all you have to do is make sure you know which day to get it.

In Red/Blue, Flareon is a legit mixed attacker with 130 Attack and 110 Special stat. I say Flareon is the best Fire type in Red/Blue over Arcanine/Ninetales

The only times I've ever used a fire type for a playthrough were Cyndaquil for Soul Silver, and Charmander for Red. Otherwise, I just tend to avoid using them.

@Krooked Same. Fire and Dark are my favorite types, so I always try to have at least one of each on my teams. On the other hand, I barely use Grass types, besides Venusaur (and Lilligant, but it's not a starter)

I used all fire types till gen 6 expt delphox I love the fire type honestly they're awesome Kanto :just skip using one unless u really really want one Johto:typhlosion cuz it's awesome Hoenn:Blaizeken (ngl I thought it was a legendary when I was a kid sure as hell is one in comp) Sinnoh:Infernape let's be honest u have no other choice I didn't like infernape in game in the start cuz it's also fire and fighting but after playing platinum twice safe to say this is rn my fav in game starter to use Unova :Emboar Kalos : Finally charizard Finally and u can get it at long last as a part dragon

if you ask me, close combat on infernape and staraptor is overrated because it lowers both defense so a well placed psychic or water or flying attack on infernape or a electric ice and or rock attack on staraptor would KO both of them after using a close combat depending on what the opposing pokemon is

If your opponent is sending out a Pokémon that’s strong against either of them then just switch them out. Besides, it’s not like either of them are tanks to begin with.

arcanine with intimidate i always was a staple in my battle tower team. hea such a magnum and i would start with a dragon and switch to arcanine if i anticipate an ice move coming. then if they are gonna use ground on my dog i would switch to levitating gengar. pretty solid team but they did nerf gengar eventually.
