As always, a very well executed project. However, with a small problem. Carbon has a shielding effect on electromagnetic radiation. That's why the material is not very suitable as a mobile phone cover.
@jedrek29t3 жыл бұрын
I didn't know that
@juergentoelzer35553 жыл бұрын
@@jedrek29t The shielding depends on the fabric. The more layers and the tighter the fabric, the higher the attenuation. You can test the reception (WLAN and cellular) with and without the cell phone shell and report. All the best

Would that still be the same if the carbon is soaked and covered in resin?
@juergentoelzer35553 жыл бұрын
@@dhd8850 I think the electromagnetic properties do not change significantly due to the resin. It would be better to use Kevlar fabric only.

This is a strong case but it's not a good case. The purpose of a smartphone case is to protect the smartphone from drop damage not bullets. This has no shock absorption whatsoever and in case of a drop the case will be unharmed but the same won't be the case for your smartphone which defeats the purpose of a case in the first place.

Recently I also tried to make a kevlar case. I used tpu case as a matrix to copy the phone with plaster, then I`ve put the phone copy into balloon to have easier separation, then added 5 layers of twaron (black kevlar). When everything was aligned and ready I`ve put another balloon for separating breather cloth, then the last balloon for infusion proses. Unluckily while the epoxy was halfway in failed my improvised vacuum connector, and when I fixed that I decided to put it underwater, as latex has pores where air can go in, but those are too small for water atoms. The next morning I found out that there was a leak in the system, the final case was not compressed enough to that positive matrix and some layers were partially. It was over introduced with epoxy with uneven geometry, and also too stiff for usage. It went into the trash bin along with my idea to start making those cheaply for sale for max profit, that fiddling takes too long and the result is not worth it. China manufactures make those for 25 euros and those are decent quality. I`d suggest you to buy an ultrasonic cutter, it`s cutting as dremmel, but makes no dust. Also it is more dust free to cut kevlar with sharpy, not seazers. Maybe I will revisit this idea with negative matrix approach and vacuumbagging/harvest autoclaving, thanks for good video with a resultative aproach!

Strong ≠ hard And loose fibers without a matrix are fragile But still, carbon fibers will absolutely fuck your kitchen scissors up. Professionals have their own special scissors for CF and another for Aramid (Kevlar)
@FixXxeR8583 жыл бұрын
Not to be that guy but, that case wouldn't protect the phone better then any ordinary cured fabric in resin really. The fabric itself is bendable, sure the carbon fabric won't break but it will bend, meaning the resin will crack if impacted and the fabric bend.
@WhenDoesTheVideoActuallyStart3 жыл бұрын
I see you've never seen anything made from carbon fiber. No, the fabric won't bend, because it's being held in place by the resin. And the combination of carbon fiber and resin is incredibly stiff and strong.
@FixXxeR8583 жыл бұрын
@@WhenDoesTheVideoActuallyStart I'm just saying it doesnt matter if you use cloth or carbon fibre if the shock of impact is only taken by the resin. It doesent make the resin harder, and it does not absorb shock very well. The carbon fibres strengths to not tear or get penetrated is useless in this application.

@WhenDoesTheVideoActuallyStart3 жыл бұрын
You can't absorb a whole lot of shock with a TPU case. If you distribute the shock from an impact across the whole phone, the stress on individual components is much less pronounced, and you're much less likely to see damage.
