Yes, but there are some foreigners who has spent a lot of time here that aren't surrounded by Indonesians or an Indonesian community. A lot of times, they are around other foreigners too, not because they want to be exclusive or they think they're higher than Indonesians, but simply coz they feel most at home with people like them--foreigners. Thus, not being exposed to the language as much. I've spent many years in Indo but I was always surrounded by people with different nationalities. I wasn't that exposed to the Indonesian language because everyone around me spoke English; I was rarely in a situation where I had to speak in Bahasa Indonesia (except for basic things like ordering taxi or food, or asking for directions, etc), thus my speaking skills weren't the greatest and also why, up to this day, I'm not confident in conversing in Bahasa Indonesia. It was only when I met Alex, my first authentic Indonesian friend (I say authentic, coz most of my Indo friends grew up western-influenced haha), that my speaking and understanding skills improved coz I hung out with her a lot. That being said, there are other foreigners or expats who have spent less time here who are fluent in the language because they are surrounded or work with fellow Indonesians, thus their speaking and understanding skills improve in a much quicker speed. My point is, although it may seem that because a person has spent a big number of years in a country, that doesn't always mean they are fluent in a language. Often times, their fluency in a language and their knowledge about a country is determined by the environment they're in and the people they're with. I hope the information helped! :) if you read the entire thing, thank you for reading my essay haha P.S. Just wanted to say that I'm not trying to make excuses for the lack of fluency some foreigners may have despite living in the country for so long, I just wanted to provide insight as to why this happens. And this occurs to all foreigners in different countries, not just Indo. I think all foreigners should learn the language of the country they're in; they shouldn't expect the locals to adjust to them, since they're the ones borrowing the locals' land (I know a few foreigners here who don't bother learning the language coz they think they're above that, but that story is for another TED Talk ;)).

Pembahasan soal penggunaan kata ganti kaya gini menarik banget sih buat dibahas, soalnya kalo pake formal 'saya-anda' dan tata bahasa baku di real life agak aneh, seringnya langsung pake kata ganti orang yang bersangkutan (bapak, ibu, masnya, mbaknya, dll) tapi kalo denger 'saya-anda' dari pengisi suara film-film luar atau drama korea kayanya lazim-lazim aja dan enak-enak aja pake bahasa baku. Like, why!!?? Keep it up Gado! ❤

As Javanese I think we rarely using "kamu" to other people too, using Bahasa Indonesia in daily life would be so weird and we just using "kamu" on formal convo with people on the same ages or to our beloved one. To older people we usually mention them as "Bapak/Ibu/Mas/Mbak" or using "Jawa krama" instead and "anda" is like insulting or a starter word to argue to what that people said. To other people on the same age or friends we just usually use-you-name-it "kowe" (General ones), "kon" (eastern), etc. 🤔

I have an unknown accent. For some Sundanese, they thought me as a Javanese, and vice versa. When I speak in informal Indonesian, they realised if I have an accent, but they can't recognized where it comes from. Some people thought me has an accent which come from Padang, Batak, or even Ambon. But I speak in Indonesian during my earlier childhood. I live in Cianjur, West Java.

#cmiiw #imo

Hey Alex, this is slightly pedantic, but you should correct your friends when they refer to Indonesian as "bahasa." The word for bahasa Indonesia in English is Indonesian. Abbreviating it to "bahasa" just doesn't work, because 1.) the word itself means language and 2.) there's bahasa Indonesia and bahasa melayu, and Indonesians don't have a claim on the entire term lol.

Loooove your video as always! This is very insightful yet entertaining. You guys should make a video comparing how people from various countries pronounce English words in their "accent". Anyway, in Indonesian informal language we don't really use "Anda", as it's considered rude, kayak nyolot gitu. We only use "Anda" when we're upset or trying to provoke someone 😂 For older people/strangers or when we wanna be polite, we usually just use Ibu/Bapak/Mas/Mbak/Kakak/Abang/Bung instead of "kamu". Never thought about it before, but bahasa Indonesia is pretty difficult huh. Lol.

At that time, I didn't know that using "aku-kamu" were only when someone was about to have a relationship. Then after 3 days, one of my friend said that it's better to use "gue-lo", because using "aku-kamu" means you're flirting with that person. I was like : "WTF??????????" @@kioraunny1351 Yeah sometimes that was the case, you know even we don't wanna admit it, most people in indonesia still sees people based on their races, i wouldn't complain about that 'cuz we had so many races, and yeah it's kinda racist, or maybe indonesia is the most racist country in the world that won't even admit that they're racist, when i say it like this it's kinda fucked up so i prefer most indonesian still judge people with races one.

Rizuki Alan SO TRUEEE i have so many problems living with my long hijab in bali. Sometimes a group of high school students passing by and yell at me 'look! A terrorist' and then laughing at each other. Or the way people look at me so weirdly that makes me feel very uncomfortable. Maybe this is sounds normal for you, but you will never know how much these things affect on people who face it everyday, everytime...

@@kioraunny1351 ummm.... For that one you know its kinda complicated, and because the Religion Issues i won't talk about that, but what happen exactly when i read your reply basically You're a Muslim correct? So when Java because you use Hijab or maybe because in the reality Bali is the Cousin of Javanese Clan so yeah technically you look alike, when in Java, Javanese thought you was a Javanese because you looks like Javanese and wearing a Hijab, and when you in Bali because you wearing a Hijab Balinese mock you sayin' you are a Terrorist, you realize that both of that is Different topic right?

Jadi, kau = you, kamu = y'all/ plural 'you'

I have a friend here that uses "Aku Kamu" regularly, and yes, that sounds like she wants to be closer as in a relationship lmao But when she tried to use "Gue elu", honestly, it doesn't suits her at all. So I ask her to stick with "Aku Kamu".

I use "aku kamu" in daily basis to everyone. I like that better because I sound more polite. So I'm like "who cares about what others think?". I use "gue lu" when I am angry.

Eh, some of the pointers here are a bit of a miss. We rarely use Anda in real life conversations, at least in Jakarta. Best option is to use bapak/ibu/kak as a replacement. Bapak/Ibu mau ke mana? Using Anda sounds so stiff and you risk sounding like a snob. Or an angry person.

And using "kamu" might sound wrong as well if it is paired with "saya" because it sounds like you're looking down at your opponent. Thus, indeed, ibu/bapak/mas/mbak/kak is the safest bet

In reality, words, accent and languages are mixed according to the local custom. Even indonesians struggle when you throw them out from their nest.
