Barbara, chillax! You are not a shopping channel. You do not need to hold on to your packaging for anybody. Crafters and newbies can already see what type of stencil you're using and can hunt for it themselves. We watch you for the crafting aspect, not for shopping. I myself, simply have mine connected by a metal ring, hanging on an S hook, hanging on my shelving unit. They're out of the way, but within easy reach. I've often found that when you start moving items out of their permanent home to make way for new or other items, you are creating problems for yourself. One solution I can see for your situation is to put the items in the plastic bags back on the cupboard door and get yourself some 3M stick-on hooks and metal rings and utilise all that wall space. Veronica x

I totally agree! There is a limit to keeping certain items, especially packaging just because somebody’s wondering what it is and where you got it. I have watched many videos were other KZbinrs do not disclose where they got all their things for their project. I am cool with that and I’m sure a lot of other people understand as well. The people that get upset are the ones that are never happy anyways, no matter what on videos. You carry on Barbara and you do you 😊

Good to know that I am not the only one who struggles with stencil/mask storage. My largest stencil is 8.5x11. I store all of them in a clear scrapbook storage box. Mine are tangled and it isn't working for me. BTW...your collection is incredible. I'm so jealous. 💜

You could glue tabs on each stencil with the relevant information you need and then hang them back up. Then you won’t need any packaging 😊

🤯🤯 seriously this is what I’m struggling with, currently I have them in a ring binder, because I don’t have any large ones it works for me, But as I was watching you I felt your frustration. It’s a constant battle, ,. “Move this to here, now what do I do with these things??? “. And of course your hubby thinks you have plenty of room, lol. Good luck we’re all here for you. We need to create a “support group”. Haha

I don't have as many stencils as you do, but I think what I did might still work for you. I used a really sturdy cardboard box and cut the sides on an angle, then put in dividers of varying heights. It looks a lot like one of those 3 slot mail organizers you can buy for your desk, except it's big enough to hold my big 12" by 12" stencils. Then I put a piece of card stock between each stencil, and put a tab with the stencil name on the top of the card stock so it would be easy to find what I was looking for. And this way, I could also include any packaging that the stencils came with.

I would take photos of each piece of packaging and put them in a file in my phone. I have an iPhone so it’s easy to access files with photos in them in iCloud. Also, it might help to add labels made from a label maker with all the pertinent information directly to the stencils where there is empty space. That way you could throw your packaging away without regret. Organizing stencils and masks is tricky. You have way more than I do, so I will be following your organization journey. The best of luck! ❤

Totally with you ... I get sooo overwhelmed whenever I try to organise my craft items & can never find suitable, affordable storage. You could maybe write stencil details next to the ones you've stuck onto the card sheets. Good luck & keep us posted ❤

For the packaging, how about taking a picture of the stencil and number from the packaging, and just popping that still shot into the video when needed? And yes, I struggle 😢storage for stencils! I have an album with sleeve protectors for standard large stencils. But I have weird sizes and all the masks...I don😢know. Hope to figure it out someday lol.

Barbara, I think that others have said this and I'll second them. I think the best solution is to get rid of the packaging, or just take photos if you really need to remember. That's where your hang-up is. And none of us are that picky about whether you tell us ALL the information on the source.

I put my stencils in plastic file folders. I still need to flip thru them, sure, but they don't get tangled together. I store them in a bankers box, like I do my other supplies, and I stack them from largest on the bottom to smallest on top. It makes it sooo much easier.

Aww poor Barbara! 😢 i feel your pain! You DO have the room, but what your hubby doesn't understand is that you want to "display" your supplies in a beautiful and practical way - not easy!! Have you considered a double or triple macrame hanging plant hanger from the ceiling with each pot holding your small items? Just a thought.

More cabinets, more drawers, more shelves, more storage. My room is stacked clear to the ceiling. Remember this is a work room, not a cutesy decorator room. My recommendation to anyone is, have boxes with lids that can stack, and label them well. However, my stencils are in an open box that I can flip through. I have a 6" box (most of my stencils), a 5' and under box, and an 8-10" box. My larger stencils are in a manila folder. All my stencils have a piece of paper between each one. I stencil each image on the page and write the designer, # and company on the paper. With all the same sizes together I can easily flip through the papers/stencils to find what I need. I even have dividers with tabs, and labels like birds, butterflies, textures, etc... Good luck, I wish I had the room to hang them like Elizabeth does.

I have a large plastic shelving unit I use to hold my supplies. I live in a small space. My living room doubles as my studio. While watching this I realized I can use the sides of my shelving unit to hang things such as stencils on! I can use some small spring tension curtain rods to create extra hanging space. Thanks for your video. I doubt I’d have gotten the inspiration if I hadn’t watched this video. ❤😊

I would create a digital planner for the masks & stencils. You could take pictures of the packaging and have keyword searches. You can also add the location of the physical product and lots more. It would take a bit of time for set up but once in a ”maintenance “ mode, it is much easier to. I use my iPad for this sort of thing that sits on my desk. Another thing that I do is, I make an altered box in place of the file box, but it’s not as easy to maneuver from one spot to the other.

I have stored my stencils in page protectors. If the are small, I sew across the center horizontal and cut in half. I then fit them in a shoe box so I am able to flip through them from smallest to largest. I also store all that info of the stencil in that page protector.

Hi Barbara, take a hand staple hi and staple the Velcro to the door. I love the idea of having the stencils hung on wire or a small cable at lease you can grab what you want and so easy to see and put back. Mine are in the 3 ring binders, so heavy I hate it but I have no where else to put them. Use your walls if they are clear that’s what I do. Love ya

Such a relief to know I am not alone in my struggles to find the best organization for my projects and craft supplies! Top-loading catalogues (like recipe boxes) are the easiest and the best invention ever. Ask kids, they generally do not like to cleanup but ok with dumping toys into cube storages. One possible solution for referencing stencils/masks without keeping physical packaging is to digitization and numbering system. Assign sequence groups to Brands (100 - Brand 1, 200 - Brand 2 and so on) and label each stencil/mask with an ID from that sequence group. Take a picture of each including packaging. Create an excel-based table (database) of your stencil/mask supplies. Use that database any time you’d like to share the source with your viewers. Over and beyond: print the pages with the table, make a cute junk journal of it and show that to us in one of the videos.

Barbara-For stencils you are clipping to Velcro straps in your craft cabinet, what about instead just screwing in small brass eye screws to the inside narrow frame of the cabinet door, same height on each side across from each other all the way down the door. String tight wire side to side to each eye screw and clip your stencils to the wire. So instead of having rows of several Velcro straps across the door, you could use rows of wire. For the masks you are taping to large hole drilled sheets, just write in or attach labels to either top front or back of page with vendor info, name, number etc. or actual sheet from product packaging.

Good morning, Barbara. I have no wall space in my studio either. I used a standard hole punch and put a hole in a space at the top of each stencil and backed each one with a piece of card stock the same size. I could write the info on the cardstsock and this also kept the stencils from tangling. Then I put what we call 'command hooks' here in the use... hooks with an adhesive back on the front of my mixed media cabinet doors. Made use of white space and my stencils are out where I can see them. I have them sorted by company - Stampn' Up, Ciao Bella, Spectrum Arts, Tim Holtz, etc. Creative Blessings!

Was just watching a Tracie Fox video? and she was showing the makers of some stamps she was going to use. She just cuts or tears off the name, or id etc and the bar code and leaves that in the sleeve. I hadnt thought of that, but it makes it so much easier to store than the whole documentation that came with the product. I thought of you instantly.

Large package of record album acetate pocket sleeves. I use them to package and store my higher end single sheets of 12x12 cardstock. The sleeve will allow you to see the descriptive cardstock base on one side and the stencils/masks on the other. You can purchase them with a folding tab and that's where you could put the stencil name or category. Good luck.

I have more than 100 stencils, 9x12 and smaller. After man trials, I found a 3 ring binder to be the best option. I keep the paper backing from the packaging. I put a piece of paperr in every sleeve and like stencils (i.e. stars) are together. My 12x12 stencils are stored in sleeves in my Kallax unit. I don't have that many of the large ones.

I have a wooden shelf, I added screw eyes to the bottom of it. Then wooden dowels supported by the loops of the screw eyes. I hang all my stencils and masks. Hanging is the best way, I am very happy with this solution. Maybe move some of the smaller shelves you have to make hanging space? Also most stencils have enough of a border to take a label, the masks maybe clip a label onto them? Hopefully this or another comment will help!

I don’t have as many stencils to store. But I use a large clear plastic envelop and store my stencils upright between the packaging cardboard (without the plastic sleeve) and slide the full envelop into my shelf. I can then pull it out and flip through the stencils for the one I want. I have put all my Tim Holz stencils on a ring in the front of the envelop. This works well for me but eventually will have to invest in a second big envelop when I get any more stencils….its getting full!

I lay a sheet of mylar behind each stencil and use a paper clip to attach it. I write the name on the stencil if there is enough room or on the mylar. They are stored flat in a 12x12 box. Not ideal but it keeps them from getting tangled up. I may try sheets of tissue paper as it would be less expensive. Thanks for your amazing videos.

I wonder if you might be happy using "page protectors" with cardstock inside. You could print a picture of the packaging onto the cardstock and then slip the stencil inside. If you are able to then put those page protectors in a file cabinet/file box, then you could flip through them more easily. If you only have a few that are larger than a standard file folder, you might be able to find a file box with a cover that is at least 12x12, then you could get a clear 12x12 pouch and velcro that to the inside top of the box and store your "too big" stencils in there? I hope that makes sense

I hang them from the ceiling. lol. Its the only space i have left and it works really well. You can hang them any height or hang them from those little plant pulleys? and with one pull they are down when you are working and another pull up out of the way. I also have some in a file cabinet in folders, and some are in a binder next to me. the later two are the ones i use the most, the ones hanging are the ones i use the least. 😊

Stencils and masks are tricky, I agree. I don't have a perfect system but I use a book ring for small stencils as you have, a small (a5) binder for some medium size stencils and a 12x12 box for my others. The 12x12 and A4 stencils go in there, and I bought some 4 pocket scrapbooking pocket pages for my 6x6 stencils. When looking for these I see four at a time and they take less space. For things I want to protect by keeping them in the original packaging I trim off a millimetre or two from the top edge of the bag, turning it into a pocket, easier to slip the stencil back into. Good luck with your search for a system you live.

My process: 1) Use each stencil/mask on cheap paper; 2) Take photos of each of them; 3) Assign a number to each stencil/mask, say, 1 to 100. Mark the stencil/mask and its photo with the same number. 4). Print photos with reduced size. 5) Set up folders or files numerically and number them in whatever container you use. 6) File the stencils in folders , like 1st one in #1, 2nd one in #2, 3rd one in #3, and so on. 7) Make a journal, folder, ring-binder, whatever for the photos. Sort them any way that works for you. As long as the numbers match the stencil and file, you can easily find them and see what you have. 8) WHEN YOU GET NEW ONES, be sure to follow steps 1-7, and give them the next number. Please let me know what you think of this process. 😊

You are not alone! I have my stencils on o rings, like you did the tim holtz stencils.and i hang them from a decorative row of hooks. I sort by size and manufacturer. I have all of them still in the packaging except the tim holtz ones since most of the packaging has a hole for hanging. It seems whenever i move one thing to organize it better, i mess up something else or it doesnt work like i planned. It is so frustrating, because i would like all of my same items stored the same way and in the same location but i just either have too much stuff or not enough space. The struggle is real! Your stencils look pretty hanging there though. Wonder if you could add eye screws to each side of your door and tie wire around the eye screws to recreate the system that was your initial inspiration. Might allow you more room for all of them, smallest down to largest. You could add velcro to the side of one of your shelves to reattach the items you removed. Also, if there are any verical spaces, take advantage...go up!😉 good luck.

My stencils, and stamps, are stored in document pockets in a ringbinder. The stamps are in snap-closed document pockets with binder holes in them (they came that way, I believe I got them from WH Smiths, for those in the UK who might think they sound like a good idea), the stencils are in clear poly pockets with an open top edge. It seems to work well for me, but I don't have a huge collection to organize. But having them in a ringbinder means it's easy to sort them too, just add labeled section dividers - even add a table of contents to each section divider, if that seems helpful to you.

I would take photos and put in a small binder, at least the larger ones (packaging) the others put in plastic sleeves. My concern is by storing them separately from the stencil , you may spend a lot of time matching the package to the stencil.

Cafe rods. They are small light and perfect for small spaces. I have them in a drawer and it holds my Washi tape, spare tape like scotch tape and packing tape and my ribbon and lace for sewing/crafts. I think they would be perfect for the soapbox door to hang your stencils from. You could use command hooks and measured dowels. I have that in my closet door for storage of light items like scarves and jewelry. That would work for your stencils too.

A solution perhaps to the packaging would be to scan both sides and put a picture into a word doc with the typed name, then you can always open the doc and search for the key word you need. It's a long task to do, but once it's done it would be easy to find. Idk if I described what I'm thinking of well, it's 5am and insomnia brain is having fun with me :'D

My large stencils are stored separately from my smaller ones. All but my 12*12 are in a plastic storage bin that I can flip though easily. I do keep paper between the more delicate ones. I do not need to keep the packaging. You could make a catalog file on your computer and attach a code on each stencil that lets you find them in the catalog quickly. That way you could ditch the packaging. Unfortunately, my craft room is filled to the brim. Since my kids are grown, I have stuff in those rooms as well as a cabinet in the garage. I think my hobby is collecting supplies. 😊

I have clear pockets "binder method" I like it better, either way you're still thumbing through them.... binder or box, I make tabs for my stecils, also, Stars, back ground circles, back ground floral, numbers, alpha, ( or the tabs as you see the stencil being used for your style. My opinion watching you, I was no no - you're not going to like the group hanging, they'll slip and fall away from clip. I would put your pocket bags back, and I would use a pocket binder and or the card box thumbing.... that way like you said, you can keep the who-what and where its from. My system cost me supplies to store them in these clear plastic binders and with pockets, I have been crafting for over 30 years, this is the most smoothest system I've had. Stencials and a joy to use, and a pain to store..... hahaha!!! I think you need to use card box system or binder and just know its the best way... to find them, put away, and easiest to store away. Good Luck Barbara! At least you're making better system then the box pile. I love your stencil mask idea - nailed it with that!

Lol yes I struggled for years until I hung mine up! Mine is a little kitchen shelf above my desk with a hanging bar and s hooks. It also lets me hang much more in a small space. I wish I'd kept my packaging from the start now so I put some in popper wallets which I punched and hung those too. Would've worked for your masks but you're out of hanging space. I think storage is quite an evolutionary process. You'll get there and you'll love having the hanging ones. Oh also I punched into packaging to hang. So quick and easy and everything in a very small space (they hang like clothes in a wardrobe. I'm SO SO happy now. I can send you the shelf link in a mo in case it helps you decide. Tfs and have a great day 💖💖💖

Stencil storage is so frustrating and I keep changing too. With your Velcro door you could glue Velcro on clothespins or solid clips perhaps for more security? And with the smaller masks I actually made some extra pockets in flat paper folders so they could be layered. You could also do this with 12x12 clear plastic and staple to make pockets. That way you can keep flat in that bin and easily flip through the stack? Love that you featured PM artist studio stencils. I'm also one of the designers. ❤

I use over the door hanging storage units. There are a lot of different designs, many with see through pockets. Amazon has many types. Not sure if these could work for your situation, but thought I’d share one of my favorite storage ideas. Regarding your packaging for stencils…could you create a” master board” for each company , photograph it and just link to the ones you are using in the description box?

I love your organization videos!! 🥰 You always have amazing ideas and solutions. I know how you like to buy and use antiques in your craft studio I was wondering if an antique wooden clothes drying rack would work (the one with individual arms that fold away when you aren't using them)? It is just an idea where you could see and use them in an aesthetically pleasing way. Thank you for sharing your journey. I have so enjoyed seeing the transformation of your studio. PS for the larger stencils, punch a hole in the corner and hang them on a ring. And now that your acrylic box is empty, you can store the pouches in it!

Hi Barbara it is a struggle. I use an A4 display folder for the majority of mine. You can also get 12x12 display folders or some call them project folders for the larger ones. This way you can keep your cardboard packaging in the sleeve. Light weight!

rolling file cabinet, picture of stencil on outside of hanging folder so you don't have to look in every folder. Each folder has one or two stencils. Roll cabinet over when in use, roll it away when done.

If you have a large stencil collection, then yes, storage and organization get complicated. . I like what you did with the masks, I'm stealing that idea! You already have to split the masks into different storage because of the super large ones. So, what if you used the vecro and clips on the door only for large stencils and put the smaller ones (6X6 and smaller) into the upright type of box you were talking about with the cardstock seperators? That way the box wouldn't need to be overwhelmingly large. Depends on how you work. The packaging issue: if (unlike me) you are diligent and make sure you back it up, you could take pictures and use a spreadsheet with keywords to keep track of manufacturers, names, and sku. TFS

Hi, dear Barbara! I like your new stencil organization system, although I am not sure how many more stencils you can store there. Regarding the velcro and your thoughts on sewing the sides and middles, maybe you could use some safety pins to secure more the velcro stripes to the velcro on the door. Regarding the stencils packaging, maybe you could make an electronic catalog (something I always wanted to make but never did for all kinds of my supplies), i.e., take photo of every package and then make a document where you will include the photos of the packages with a keyword to easily trace them (or maybe the full description if you want to have it), for example, hearts for all hearts stencils which will be gathered together in the document. With that document, you can throw away all the packaging 👍👍👍 and keep only your catalog. Moreover, you can have all the descriptions digitally, and you can just copy-paste everything you need for your videos. Sweet greetings, Elena.❤❤❤

You're so not alone in this struggle:0) And I loved so much you've shared all your ideas and doubts and on-the-way pondering. It was really helpful to clear some of my thoughts too, so thank you. As for the flimsiness of velcro strips over the velcro backing, I'd simply fixed edges and centre with some screws. They won't leave such a big holes even if you decide to remove them later on. And, honestly, it's a shame to waste all this velcro backing for the task, since all you need here is just some big enough surface

to mount your lines for clipping stencils on them, and these lines could be just screwed on. How cool would it be to make an additional double door, just for stencils, ha? No velcro backing needed. And use some sturdy but thin bars instead of flimsy lines. Like, for example, long rulers over a couple of washers to make clipping easier. But the again maybe you'll finally opt for a box. Anyway, love from Ukraine ♡

I know you don’t want to use notebooks but what I have is 2 notebooks, one with letter size sheet protectors with cardstock, and the other is a 12x12 ring bound scrapbook with sheet protectors and cardstock. In the small one I do like you did with your masks for smaller stencils on cardstock with info either written on the C/S or the packaging on the backside. My large stencils fit perfectly in the 12x12 album. It is very easy to slip them back in after cleaning. This way I can also take out the protector until I am ready to put it away as well. Your craft room is always so organized but could you put the notebooks/albums on the floor next to your chair? Or leaned up against the door you have them currently hanging on? Or what about an accordion file (not sure if y’all call them that in Austria) but then you still have the dilemma of where to store it. Just like with the albums or a box. Not sure if any of this helps. One other thought is you could punch a hole in each and put the stencil and paperwork on a ring or the ring things like Tim Holtz uses. I have a few stencils that are too large for my 12x12 protectors so I either punch holes in them or use the stencils holes to put them on the rings. We (I) don’t have a problem taking our dies or stamps out of packaging and to me they are more difficult to land on a good storage solution. Good luck!! Vicky in Florida. PS. Sorry for being so long winded :-(

Love, Love, Love this video! I also have a Craft Box but have a magnetic door on one side for storing metal dies, has enough space and is definitely strong enough to hold the clips for the stencils! The smaller, more delicate stencils I will store upright in a series of pouches of various sizes that I already have in the bin where they previously lay on top of each other. So, still not getting rid of the bin but your comment about using the magnetic sheets set the light bulb off in my head about using my already magnetized door!

I was visualizing stadium boxes for the stencils. You might use old cereal or rice boxes that are the size of your largest stencil, then cut the top off, maybe two or three boxes, with the edges getting progressively shorter, like a stadium. There might be too much room on the sides of the smaller stencil holders, but you could also hang them with hooks from the side of your Kallax unit. It looks like you will have to make use of vertical space. Another option might be putting them across the back of your craft room door. You could use eye hooks and string wire across the door and hang them like that. It isn't really pretty, but it lets you see more things and you can put your pouches back in the dream box. I hope this helps. I probably made it more confusing.

I watched the same stencil video and loved that idea, but I don't have the wall space. Your idea is so smart! Would straight pins work to tack down the sides and middle? I know you don't want a binder, but a binder would work to put all the paperwork in page protectors and for the masks, use the old type photo album sticky pages. They make them acid free now and you could stick them and the papers in the same album. I know, still in a binder. I actually just got the photo album pages, but haven't started my system yet. If there were just more hours in a day!😊

I maximize every inch of wall space I have including a couple of lampshades (tore off the fabric) hanging from my ceiling on ropes and I used those little hooks with the clamps on the end to hold things. Mine have loads of little packages of Tim Holtz products etc but you could put anything on them and just walk over to it give it a spin and find what I need. The right size lampshade could hold ur bigger stencils on bottom and smaller from the top.

I have been reorganizing my entire craft room for 5 months now. I did opt for the binder system with the clear sleeves for my stencils. The stencils that did not fit in the sleeves are tucked into the inside pockets of the front and back of the binder. It keeps everything tidy and tangle free. I just had re-train my brain to put things back as soon as I am done. Best part is now I get to flip through my stencils like a picture book. Maybe try the system for a little bit and see if you like it. Perhaps rearrange some photos and plants and make room on top of your shelves? ❤❤❤
