When I was 30 in 1979 my Papaw ( born 1891 ) was in the Hospital on his deathbed and when my Mom asked him if she could get him anything he said " cantelope " from his garden and his favorite picture of my Grandmother from his nightstand. I always thought that was cool and of course I think of both of them whenever I see or smell a cantaloupe.

Some of our farmers here in the Rio Grande Valley TX use a sound device that sounds like a small cannon going off to keep wildlife out of their fields. It's motioned activated and goes off 3-4 times a night, but he has the best melons this year.

1970's. If my grandfather when out to his garden and it was sprinkling or even raining, he had these dark green poncho's. He gave me a brand new one, did I feel like a champ. He had an old feed sack and had a strap sewn on it. He'd fill it up with sweet corn and then hoist it over his shoulder and carry it home. I've often wondered why the veggie boys didn't have something other than those baskets to use to harvest some stuff when they can then dump it on a pallet.

I am always amazed with your harvesting, and it’s just so satisfying to watch! Love it with those jalapeños are so ready to harvest that they release when they are lifted up. Your corn harvesting brings back memories for me. If it was too wet to push a wheel barrow down between the rows, we went barefooted and used a big galvanized washtub to put the corn in. You had to get the corn harvested, especially when you had customers waiting for it! : ) Mature cantaloupes falling off the vine when they are ready… that makes for easy harvesting! : ) It is hard to see so much produce being tossed to the ground with rot issues. In the long run though, like you said, its not going to waste, its going back into the soil to feed future plants. Did you get the same storm that the Broyan’s farm got. I watched their video before yours came up. They got 2” of rain in about 30 minutes and had some storm damage and fields flooded. A tree had even been blown down in their trailer at the farm market.

Good morning Andrew, it was nice to see Mama out in the fields, so glad she did not help with the sweet corn, you would/could have lost her in there, my goodness there is not much size, height to her at all. Better keep an eye on her, so small she can easily get lost, keep her in the farm store :) Now, I have much empathy with you regarding the spoiling of the zucchini's, they like all the other fruits and vegetables with the "soft" skin do bruise easily and it can mean a loss. Logan on Broyans Farm was accessing the hail and rain damage and complaining bitterly. I think he was quite disillusioned regarding the damage, BUT he could have picked the small damaged goods, taken it home and they could have used it in preserving, just to cut out the damaged area and use the rest provided the flavour is not effected. He just dropped good looking tomatoes for no reason. I know in our small home gardens when we experience weather or insect damage we also can complain but at least we can make another plan, it is challenging when you are a farmer and you experience crop damage. Much can be said regarding food waste, but it is what it is. As always I really enjoy watching the family working on the farm, and Kelly is a super delight to watch. Take care around the muddy pools on the land, not just walking but driving as well. Kind regards.
