I was there that night. Sam thought he was bombing because the mic wasn't picking him up all the time, so the laughs were hit or miss. It was definitely not his fault. It was his fifth show of the weekend. Can't imagine he went the previous two nights with the same problem. Because he thought he was bombing, he was struggling to get momentum mid set. This was toward the end of the show, after eventually someone said we couldn't hear him, so he went to this material, which I figure he knew half the room already knew from his special and would be receptive to it, and he hit it out of the park!
