What I love about the Study Quran, apart from these beautiful essays at the end, is that it is the most comprehensive compilation of all the tafaseer/commentary of all the giants. Ibn Kathir, Ibn Arabi, Al Razi and over 30 other well known and respected ones. So those unfamiliar with the complexity of the Arabic language get the most holistic, comprehensive summary against each verse and surah. The book has changed me and alhamdulillah I've been able to purchase it for others. Highly, highly recommended!!!

Great subject. An important concept in Islam is "taqwaa", protecting oneself from the displeasure and wrath of Allah. The observance of prayer five times a day is an "aide memoire" for taqwaa. You touched upon this concept during your presentation.

Many years ago, when I read the Old Testament, it struck me that there is very little mention of judgment, and no mention of afterlife, heaven and hell. What do you think was the reason? Was it something not important enough to be mentioned by God? Or it was mentioned but the idea of accountability was not cherished by the people and the verses were taken out? This is a core belief in Islam but totally absent in the Old Testament. It always baffled me. We see in Qur'an that all the prophets were warning their people with a judgment and punishment.

God mercy is unparalleled if we disobey him for whole life but if we return to him before death he will forgive us. In this worldly matter we are more cautious for each and everything from traffic rules to our education, because we will see the result immediately in this life and pay the price, but we usually forget about hereafter.

Thank you Paul. I really appreciate this, it is worth mentioning that whenever Allah speaks about the torments of hell in the Quran, it is often followed by the bounties of heaven and the mercy and forgiveness of Allah. It's always a message of hope, mercy and forgiveness. But the torments of hell should be no secret or classified as sensetive information just because people find it scary and don't want to hear about it. People need to be warned and understand there is a lot at stake here.

Paul, Your commentary on the Study Qur'an is useful, as is the one linked by Mobeen Vaid in the description. In terms of the soteriological aspects of the different traditions (Torah/New Testament/Qur'an etc) there is scope for someone with your background in theology to dedicate a Vlog to the subject I would have thought. BTW, I belong to the Abou el-Fadl school of thought on this topic: Islam being the only correct way toward salvation, but that Allah is Just and will account/reward for any good done in this world by individuals whatever their belief.

Whatever school of thought we ascribe to should always be aligned with what the Qur'an and Hadith actually taught us: “Verily, whosoever sets up partners (in worship) with Allâh, then Allâh has forbidden Paradise to him, and the Fire will be his abode” [al-Maa’idah 5:72] “And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:85] “And We shall turn to whatever deeds they (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners) did, and We shall make such deeds as scattered floating particles of dust” [al-Furqaan 25:23] “Those who deny Our Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and the Meeting in the Hereafter (Day of Resurrection,), vain are their deeds. Are they requited with anything except what they used to do?” [al-A’raaf 7:147]

There is sadness everyday as muslim that we meet those that Seem (in human eyes) to be far astray, though Allah alone know their position after this life. We do our best by our actions by our limited knowledge to convey the Message. At the End though, we are not even sure ourselves what we have done and if the Book will be given in our right hand or left. Have hope and to control Yourselves, also have fear. I am always feeling in between that most of the time.

In Qur'an, the happiness and pleasure in Paradise and is mentioned as double as Hell and its Torments. The Qur'an is optimistic scripture not pessimistic one. There is Hadith Qudsi states the meaning "Allah keeps 99% of his mercy for the Judgment day, and he sent to earth only 1% of his mercy, with all of that 1% mercy, all creatures get mercy to each other so that a Mare hold up her hoof away in order not to hurt her baby foal". Allah, his majesty (sobhano wa taala) so merciful and I suppose that only 1% or less of human shall go to hell, and the rest shall go to Paradise. Allah did not create us with his own hands to put us on Hell and its Torments. If so, then we underestimate Allah and it is a great insult to him.

Brother Paul, as you go along studying Islam you will find at some point that there is so much to learn as well in Islamic theology as a discipline. One aspect I want to point out is the tendency to overemphasize the authority of previous scholars who have pioneered a certain field so much so that their views become canonical, not open to debate anymore. This tendency has led to so much delay in the progress of Islamic scholarship in a lot of specialties. I believe there is so much yet to be learned and understood from the words of the Quran if only scholars are up to the task. I am saying this as a non-scholar in the field but it's just so plain to see. It would seem there is currently a shortage of Scholars, to say the least. So please don't hesitate to look beyond the opinions of some established scholars. So much accommodation is afforded in Islam when it comes to seeking knowledge!

Thank you again. A couple of observations. Shirk, is associating partners with Allah, the one true God, idolatry is a consequence of such belief, the two not being identical. Takabbur or pride is not shirk, it is falsehood, ascribing false attributes to oneself. Iblis was aware of Tawhid, yet he became arrogant, full of pride and felt superior. Allah does not like arrogance etc.Iblis is thus condemned for eternity, an example for all of us self righteous folks

Chapter: the vast Mercy of Allaah extending to the non-believers that they will live in the outskirts (mouth) of gardens of eternal bliss [في أفواهِ الجنة أو في ربض الجنة]; and that Allaah is not Isomorphic (Equal Form) to humans - Elementally, but He is Multimorphic (i.e., He can change His Purest Form to another Purest Form, to which He Wills, within the Image, Shape, and Contour of man only). Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported: Some people during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Messenger of Allah! shall we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Yes, and added: Do you feel any trouble in seeing the sun at noon with no cloud over it, and do you feel trouble in seeing the moon (open) in the full moonlit night with no cloud over it? They said: No, Messenger of Allah! He (the Holy Prophet) said: You will not feel any trouble in seeing Allah on the Day of Resurrection any more than you do in seeing any one of them. When the Day of Resurrection comes a Mu'adhdhin (a proclaimer) would proclaim: Let every people follow what they used to worship. Then all who worshipped idols and stones besides Allah would fall into the Fire, till only the righteous and the vicious and some of the people of the Book who worshipped Allah are left. Then the Jews would be summoned, and it would be said to them: What did you worship? They will say: We worshipped 'Uzair, son of Allah. It would be said to them: You tell a lie; Allah had never had a spouse or a son. What do you want now? They would say: We feel thirsty, O our Lord! Quench our thirst. They would be directed (to a certain direction) and asked: Why don't you go there to drink water? Then they would be pushed towards the Fire (and they would find to their great dismay that) it was but a mirage (and the raging flames of fire) would be consuming one another, and they would fall into the Fire. Then the Christians would be summoned and it would be said to them: What did you worship? They would say: We worshipped Jesus, son of Allah. It would be said to them: You tell a lie; Allah did not take for Himself either a spouse or a son. Then it would be said to them: What do you want? They would say: Thirsty we are, O our Lord! Quench our thirst. They would be directed (to a certain direction) and asked: Why don't you go there to get water? But they would be pushed and gathered together towards the Hell, which was like a mirage to them, and the flames would consume one another. They would fall Into the Fire, till no one is left except he who worshipped Allah, be he pious or sinful. The Lord of the Universe, Glorified and Exalted, would come to them in a form recognisable to them and say; What are you looking for? Every people follow that which they worshipped. They would say: Our Lord, we kept ourselves separate from the people in the world, though we felt great need of them; we, however, did not associate ourselves with them. He would say: I am your Lord. They would say: We take refuge with Allah from thee and do not associate anything with Allah. They would repeat it twice or thrice, till some of them would be about to return. It would be said: Is there any sign between you and Him by which you will recognise Him? They would say: Yes. and the things would be laid bare. Those who used to prostrate themselves before God of their own accord would be permitted by God to prostrate themselves. But there would remain none who used to prostrate out of fear (of people) and ostentation but Allah would make his back as one piece, and whenever he would attempt to prostrate he would fall on his back. Then they would raise their heads and He would assume the Form in which they had seen Him the first time and would say: I am your Lord. They would say: Thou art our Lord. Then the bridge would be set up over the Hell and intercession would be allowed and they will say: O God, keep safe, keep safe. It was asked: Messenger of Allah, what is this bridge? He said: The void in which one Is likely to slip. There would be hooks, tongs, spits like the thorn that is found in Najd and is known as Sa'dan. The believers would then pass over within the twinkling of an eye, like lightning, like wind, like a bird, like the finest horses and camels. Some will escape and be safe, some will be lacerated and let go, and some will be pushed into the fire of Hell till the believers will find rescue from the Fire. By One in Whose hand is my life, there will be none among you more eager to claim a right than the believers on the Day of Resurrection for (saying their) brethren in the Fire who would say: O our Lord, they were fasting along with us, and praying and performing pilgrimage. It will be said to them: Take out those whom you recognise. Then their persons would be forbidden to the Fire; and they would take out a large number of people who had been overtaken by Fire up to the middle of the shank or up to the knees. They would then say: O our Lord I not one of those about whom Thou didst give us command remains in it. He will then say: Go back and bring out those in whose hearts you find good of the weight of a dinar Then they will take out a large number of people. Then they would say: O our Lord! we have not left anyone about whom You commanded us. He will then say: Go back and bring out those in whose hearts you find as much as half a dinar of good. Then they will take out a large number of people, and would say: O our Lord! not one of those about whom Thou commanded us we have left in it. Then He would say: Go back and in whose heart you find good to the weight of a particle bring him out. They would bring out a large number of people, and would then say: O our Lord, now we have not left anyone in it (Hell) having any good in him. Abu Sa'id Khudri said: If you don't testify me in this hadith, then recite if you like:" Surely Allah wrongs not the weight of an atom; and if it is a good deed. He multiplies it and gives from Himself a great reward" (al-Qur'an, iv. 40). Then Allah, Exalted and Great, would say: The angels have interceded, the apostles have interceded and the believers have interceded, and no one remains (to grant pardon) but the Most Merciful of the mercifuls. [[He will then take a handful from Fire and bring out from it people who never did any good and who had been turned into charcoal, and will cast them into a river called the river of life, on the OUTSKIRTS of Paradise]]. They will come out as a seed comes cut from the silt carried by flood. You see it near the stone or near the tree. That which is exposed to the sun is yellowish or greenish and which is under the shade is white. They said: Messenger of Allah! it seems as if you had been tending a flock in the jungle. He (the Holy Prophet) said: They will come forth like pearls with seals on their necks. The inhabitants of Paradise would recognise them (and say): Those are who have been set free by the Compassionate One. Who has admitted them into Paradise without any (good) deed that they did or any good that they sent in advance. Then He would say: Enter the Paradise; whatever you see in it is yours. They would say: O Lord, Thou hast bestowed upon us (favours) which Thou didst not bestow upon anyone else in the world. He would say: There is with Me (a favour) for you better than this. They would say: O our Lord! which thing is better than this? He would say: It is My pleasure. I will never be angry with you after this. [Sahih Muslim 183a]

I'm confused as to why Hell and Paradise weren't revealed in the Torah/Psalms? The only explanation I can come up with is that Allah knew beforehand the Israelites (the exclusive audience of the Torah and Psalms, unlike the universal Qur'an) were so attached to the dunya that the threat/reward of akhira wouldn't change their behaviour, but I'd like to hear others way in.

Islam The Beautiful Religion ( Be Just ) Quran 5:8 '' O you who believe! stand out firmly for God, as witnesses to fair dealing, and let not the > HATRED OF OTHERS TO YOU < make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just: that is next to piety: and fear God. For God is well-acquainted with all that ye do. '' Quran 4:58 '' Indeed, God commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which God instructs you. Indeed, God is ever Hearing and Seeing.'' ( God's The Rules Of War ) Quran 2:190 '' Fight in the way of God > THOSE WHO FIGHT YOU < but do not transgress. Indeed. God does not like transgressors. '' Quran 2 :193 '' And fight them on until there is no more oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in God; but if they cease, Let there be no hostility except to those who practice oppression. '' Quran 4:90 ''.........So if they withdraw from you and cease their hostility and offer you peace, in that case Allah has not granted you permission to fight against them.'' Quran 8:61 ''And if they seek peace, then you also seek it, and put your trust in God. He is the Hearer, the Knowledgeable.'' ( Stand Up For Justice ) Quran 4 :135 '' Ye who believe! stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to God, even as against > YOURSELVES < or your parents, or your kin, and whether it be (against) rich or poor: for God can best protect both. Follow not the lusts (of your hearts), lest ye swerve, and if ye distort (justice) or decline to do justice, verily God is well-acquainted with all that ye do.'' ( Who Are The Good Human Beings? ) Quran 2.177 '' Righteousness is "NOT" that you turn your faces ( In Worship ) toward the east or the west but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in God, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth,> IN SPITE OF LOVE FOR IT,< to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for > freeing slaves < [and who] establishes prayer and gives charity; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous. '' ( Freedom To Believe And To Reject ) Quran 2:256 '' Let there be no compulsion in religion. Truth stands out clear from error '' Quran 10:99 '' And had your Lord willed, those on earth would have believed > all of them entirely < Then would you compel the people in order that they become believers? '' ( Tolerance For Other Religions ) Quran 109: 1- 6 Say,"O disbelievers, I do not worship what you worship. Nor are you worshipers of what I worship. Nor will I be a worshiper of what you worship. Nor will you be worshipers of what I worship. For you is your religion, and for me is my religion." ( Protection for Idol Worshiper ) Quran 9:6 "And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah. Then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are people who do not know. " Quran16:125 “Call people to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good teaching, and argue with them in the most courteous way” Quran7:199 “Be tolerant....” ( Friendship With Non Muslims ) Quran 60:8 '' God does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, God loves those who act justly. '' ( Do Christians And Jews and "OTHER" non-Muslims go to Heaven? ) Quran 2:62 '' Those who believe (in the Qur'an), and those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Christians and the Sabians,-> ANY { On Judgement Day } ( According to the Quran Christians and Jews worship TRUE God ) (Quran 3:113-114) '' Not all of them are alike: Of the People of the Book ( Christians and Jews ) are a portion that stand (For the right): They rehearse the Signs of God all night long, and they prostrate themselves in adoration. They believe in God and the Last Day; they enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong; and they hasten (in emulation) in (all) good works: They are in the ranks of the righteous.'' Note: According to the Quran that Jesus is not God nevertheless Christians still worship one '' TRUE '' God. ( > Allah < Is The Protector Of Monasteries, Churches, Synagogues And The Mosques ) Quran 22:40 [They are] those who have been evicted from their homes without right - only because they say, "Our Lord is Allah ." And were it not that Allah checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of Allah is much mentioned. And Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might. ( Why Are There So Many Different Religions In The World ? ) Quran 5 48 ''...... If God wanted He could have made all of you a > single nation < But He willed otherwise in order to test you in what He has given you;(scriptures) therefore try to excel one another in good deeds. Ultimately you all shall return to God; then He will show you the truth of those matters in which you > DISPUTE submission < to God), never will it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter He will be in the ranks of those who have lost (Salvation)'' My explanation of above verse Islam mean > submission < to God ( The above verse saying is that God will not accept a religion from the > MUSLIM < and the Non-Muslims but total > submission < to God.) Question: How Can Muslim And the Non-Muslim > submit < to the God? Answer: Be kind to other human beings and Do not lie, Do not steal, Do not cheat, Do not hurt others, Do not be prideful and Do the charity work. ( God Allow Muslims To Marry And Eat Food From the Christian And Jew And Vice Versa ) Quran 5;5 ''This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture ( Christian and Jew) is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture ( Christian and Jew) before you, when you have given them their due compensation, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking [secret] lovers. And whoever denies the faith - his work has become worthless, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.'' ( Kindness Toward Atheists / > APOSTATE < ) Quran 60:8 '' As for such [ of the unbelievers ( atheist) ] as do not fight against you on account of [your] faith, and neither drive you forth from your homelands, > Allah < does not forbid you to show them > kindness < and to behave towards them with full equity: for, verily, Allah loves those who act equitably. '' ( All The Terrorists / Killers Will Enter Hell Fire ) Quran 5:32 "......Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely......" ( Turned Your Enemies Into Your Best Friends ) Quran 41:34 "The good deed and the evil deed are not alike. Repel the evil deed with one which is better, then lo! he, between whom and thee there was enmity (will become) as though he was a bosom friend." ( The Husband and The Wife Are > Protecting Friends < One Of Another ) Quran 9:71 ''And the believers, men and women, are > Protecting Friends < one of another; they enjoin the right and forbid the wrong, and they establish worship and they pay the poor-due, and they obey God and His messenger. As for these, God will have mercy on them. Lo! God is Mighty, Wise.'' Quran16:97 “To whoever, male or female, does good deeds and has faith, We shall give a good life and reward them according to the best of their actions. Quran 30:21 “And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you > affection and mercy { Love } The Prophet Muhammad said, “The best among you is the best to his wife” ( Human Are One Big family ) Quran 49:13 " O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of God is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And God has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things)." ( All The Racist People Will Enter Hellfire ) Quran 30:22 "And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colors. Indeed in that are signs for those of knowledge." My comment: The > BASIC < message of God to the human is that '' YOU '' believe in God and be kind to other human beings / > animals < and in the > RETURNED < God will > REWARD < you with a new life in Paradise. * The Quran ONLY guides you how to become a good human being "Nothing Else". * You are a good human being or a bad human being that is YOUR choice. * No one can force you to become a good human being. * You MUST work HARD to become a good human being. * Why should ''YOU'' do good deeds and avoid bad deeds? * Do Good - it's for You. Do Bad - It's against you. * '' YOUR'' life is a TEST from God that you will choose to do either Good or Bad. * Find the excuse to help others and forgive others NOT the other way around. * '' YOUR '' final destination is either Hell or Heaven. * So work HARD toward choice of YOUR destination. Quran 17:7 '' If you do good, you will do so for your own good. And if you do evil, it will be to your own loss.'' /

paradise cannot be obtained easily, it is not as easy as entering Walt Disney. only by paying for the ticket. Therefore, the existence of hell is important in Islam so that Muslims understand that heaven must be achieved by not doing anything that causes a person to be in hell. That is the standard rule, but in essence, because of the love of Allah SWT, someone is in heaven.🙏

Aq - yours is a typically partisan commentary on what amounts to one of the best, but by no means perfect, works in the genre. You appear not to have the flexibility of mind to appreciate the different opinions concerning the potential meanings of the Qur'anic text. It is a fundamental error not to be aware of these different shades and to ascribe them to some deficiency, which you relate - erroneously - to Shi'a, Sufi or orientalist origin; as if yours is the only correct opinion and reliable knowledge. Your lack of consideration of other potential interpretations is a symptom of the rigid traditionalist approach which is not open to further revision. For you and them, the Qur'an is stuck in the past with no possibility to reinterpret in the present or future. I pity your position for which the only remedy lies in you seeking knowledge.

@@stephenconnolly1830 please be consistent with your approach and say that groups like ISIS,, Al Qaida, Boko Haram etc. and their interpretation is valid, lol (of course you wont though, because it goes against your narrative and subjective reasoning). The claim the Qur'an is open to interpretation gives evil people a free passage to suit the religion to their desires, but again, you wont admit this. In fact, Islam is the only religion with a pure orthodox interpretation that is not hijacked. There is only 1 valid interpretation of the Qur'an or Islam in general and that is according to the salaf and the khalaf. The first 3 generations of the Muslims and those who came after. Islam is a very clear and pure religion, but it is revisionists and "modernists" such as yourself who has a problem with everything that doesn't fit his 21st century narrative, so you make up there to be "lots of valid opinions and interpretations" while there arent. @@rabiaatif3537 The point is that no one can understand the Quran without being taught it.

Mustafa M brother you are right in saying that you need a teacher to learn, but not Quran. One needs a teacher to fix the mindset before you can understand Quran as you need a neutral “cautious” attitude to understand Quran, as mentioned in the second verse of Albaqra. Asalamualaikum and JazakAllah

Sorry sir, but where did you find the hatith which says the majority of paradise's inhabitants are women? I never heard that hadith before and most likely it's a weak hadith not found in authentic hadith books. This will contradict the other hadith which says majority of hell's inhabitants are women, so mathematically speaking, they can't be majority in Hell and at the same time majority in Paradise. The other things that non Muslims assume is that Muslims are going to paradise, on the contrary majority of the Muslims will go to hell, since believe alone won't save them nor do Muslims who obeys Allah and abstain wrong doing are going to heaven automatically. Muslims like anyone else will have to go through Allah's court or judgement day and be accountable to every little details in their past life. Obviously most Muslims will go to hell for punishment of their evil doing in the past and then for the mercy of Allah each will be taken to paradise after sometime. Each sinful person will go to hell, even if one happens to be muslim. Who knows may even good upright muslim person may have mistreated his old parents or perhaps he may have starved a dog or a cat
