TV executives used to be really clueless. I watched a documentary on the cancelation of Gilligan's Island on CBS. It was one of the higher rated shows on CBS, but the network had to cut some programs to make space for new shows and their ratings were in the toilet. 📺 = 💩 🚽 😖 The head of CBS, Cheif executive, William S. Paley was on vacation, so the management underneath him (not sure of it was a board of directors or what, it has been about 15-20 years since I had seen it), picked GUNSMOKE, and the ratings had dropped drastically. Paley came back from vacation, saw GUNSMOKE was canceled, and threw a fit, as that was HIS WIFE'S favorite TV show. He HATED Gilligan's Island because he thought it was silly. So when he looked at the list of programs that were not canceled, he selected Gilligan's Island, even though it had MUCH higher TV ratings than GUNSMOKE at this time. Another new show titled DOC was also canceled, and GUNSMOKE was rescheduled in the time slot of that Gilligan's Island and DOC were scheduled for. Actually, ABC affiliates COULD have delayed everything, but back in 1981, many stations I believe still were required to be off the air entirely (either for transmitter maintenance or local laws) by 1:30 or 2:00 AM and being on the air past that could have resulted in unintended consequences had they stayed on even the 15 minutes after to accommodate delayed broadcasts of later programming. While cable programming had started to make this moot, I believe back then there were still concerns about being on the air past a certain point of time, especially if Churches, who then often had a much greater say could dictate such.

Mork and Mindy was ruined by ABC- as they took the #3 ranked show on television-including destroying powerful "The Waltons" and changed the supporting cast and ruined it. Plus, they moved it to Sundays with the ruined plot line and it finished 27th. THEN, they moved it back to Thursday and it was awful-mostly due to the talentless supporting cast. Williams was always brilliant. It wasn't until the 4th season they got legend Jonathan Winters to play Mork and Mindy's son (aging backwards). Had they done that year 2- the show would've been brilliant and highly rated for 10 years. Barney Miller was also a classic and without Bosom Buddies- the world wouldn't have discovered Tom Hanks. So that Thursday lineup was still legendary as far as entertainment history is concerned. This whole video is dumb because if the game ended before 9:30 pm, Pacific time- which is surely did- the local news on the West Coast even if it started at 10 instead of 11- had plenty of time to air the network show. It's no different than the current strategy networks have airing a new show or current show it hopes to increase ratings for after the AFC/NFC Championship Game and the Super Bowl. The decision by the West Coast affiliates to air their local news rather than the sitcom was because they had likely seen the sitcom and knew it sucked, so they decided to increase the ratings for their local broadcast. It had nothing to do with this stupid, waste of time video about not knowing a NFL game often goes over 3 hours in length.

It's a Living was called Making a Living after Season 1... the theme song was called It's a Living still. It did much better in syndication and is on Antenna TV on weekends at 4 and 4:30PM Eastern and Rewind at 5 amd 5:30 AM Eastern weekdays in case you are interested (at least on my cable system, yours may vary). I was waiting for a "talk about a Dumb Decision" here as well...

Thursday nights sadly aren’t what they used to be. Especially on NBC, where they somehow decided to stop airing sitcoms. It Still to this date has me wondering whether or not Americans were actually asking for NBC to stop airing sitcoms on Thursday nights. If they Were, then IMO, they have about as much personality as a slab of wood.
Well currently NBC's Thrusday Night lineup sucks now. Will & Grace already finished it's final season and now the only Thrusday Night show is Law & Order and I don't know anyone who likes that. Pfft

@@runrafarunthebestintheworld I thought, L&O, ended, with, a degree of dignity, but, it got a revival that felt, totally, out, of place, not, to mention, that they're planning, on, running, SVU, completely, into, the ground, cancelation being, "sexist."

@@runrafarunthebestintheworld I never have-- no version of Law & Order has done anything for me (not even dadgum SVU, which, IMO, is the absolute worst of it)!

@@bmasters1981 Also the other problem is whenever NBC did don't Thursday Night Football I heard that the NFL wanted Al Michaels to do the games not Mike Tirico and that's a pretty big ask from the NFL. Still not sure why they didn't go back to CBS it seemed like a pretty decent relationship and deal.

The bigger problem was ABC execs fiddle-faddled about the fate of BOTW so long, Joel Higgins decided to sign on with Silver Spoons instead

The game would've been over at 9 PST, what time is the news normally? Maybe central time zone was affected.

Would you believe west coast news on network affiliates start at 11:00 p.m. Pacific time.

JG seems to think the news follows the game in every time zone. In 1981, west coast ABC stations would have aired the other network show right after the game, regardless of how late or 'weird' the time slot was. Any local programming afterward was joined in progress.
