In August of the 1976 NFL season, Atlanta Falcons owner Rankin Smith decided to give head coach Marion Campbell a contract extension, even though Campbell had only won 25% of his games as the head coach of the team. Not even two months later, the Atlanta Falcons fired Marion Campbell. This is the story of the 1976 Falcons and what might just be the stupidest contract extension, especially for a head coach, in the history of the Atlanta Falcons

What's funny as HELL is that in 1987... they finished with 3 wins. They beat the Redskins--coached by Joe Gibbs and won the Super Bowl that yard... and the cowboys, coached by Tom Landry. Two of his 3 wins came against 2 Hall of Famers!

@@classicsports5057 Which was yet another horrid choice! All the idiot was to proceed to ruin Steve Bartkowski and a really good Falcons. Not content with 100% destroying Atlanta, he was then hired by Houston and proceeded to absolutely decimate Warren Moon and the Houston Oilers as well.

Marion Campbell: One of history's worst coaches ever not only was hired and fired by the Falcons once, but twice. Not to mention that he was employed by the Eagles after Dick Vermeil left. The man must have had blackmail information against Rankin Smith.

I was born and grew up in Atlanta and my curse has been that the Falcons are my team. While there have certainly been some mind boggling lows (mixed in with some gratifying highs) for Falcons fans during the 20 years of Arthur Blank’s ownership, the franchise was straight-up dysfunctional during the Smith family’s reign from the beginning. This story-and the fact that Marion Campbell was hired as HC *again* in the ‘80s (also a debacle, of course)-was pretty much par for the course during the Smith years, which is why JG9 keeps making Falcons videos.

You're absolutely right. Rankin Smith Sr. made a lot of decisions that made no sense whatsoever. Those were the days when you went to a Falcons game to see the other team. When I see what the Detroit Lions are going through, what the Cleveland Browns appear to be coming out of, I can't help but to feel a little sad for their fans, given we went through this from the Mid 60's to the late 90's. I feel their pain.

Remember several years ago when NFL Network had an episode of NFL Top 10 devoted to college coaches that didn't work out in the pros? If they ever did a follow-up on coordinators who never should have been promoted to the top job, Marion Campbell would have to be #1 on that list...with multiple examples (his stints in Atlanta and with the Eagles)

At 9:57 you can see the play where Steve Bartkowski (10) is injured and lost for the remainder of that season. He grabs his knee which got torn on that sack in the New Orleans game. You also see him walking off the field in an earlier game with his arm in a sling. It was tough sledding for QBs in that era!

Since you’ve made a lot of videos recently about the Falcons of that era and linked to two of them, this unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will not remind everyone of others. However, he will point out that you made a video about the one time Colts Owner Robert Irsay gave Kicker Toni Linhart a bonus after a 3-point loss to Cleveland in which Linhart missed three field goals. Irsay then released Linhart later that week.

It's not stupid, if.... the Falcons were being sneaky and taking out a clause or two in the original contract. I mean.. it could have been a rewrite of the contract *with* an extension that looked attractive for the coach to sign. Which means it was an all new contract based on the old (without some clauses that the Falcons didn't like). For example... if there was a clause in the original that paid Marion a lot of money in the event he got fired during the season... or too soon.. Then the Falcons would want that part gone... they get him to sign this "extension" and it wipes out the clause. I don't know for sure if this happened... but if it did... then Atlanta's owners were being sneaky.
