In a 1987 NFL on CBS game between the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs, color commentator Dan Jiggetts made a comment about Packers QB Don Majkowski's poor work ethic, saying that Majkowski told Jiggetts in the pregame meeting that he never watches film. The only problem? That story was completely made up, and Jiggetts' credibility took a big hit. This is the story behind the crazy controversy involving the NFL on CBS

As others have mentioned, Jigetts had a very successful post-playing career in Chicago sports radio alongside Mike North, former Bear Doug Buffone, among others. Jigetts was a mainstay on Chicago FOX affiliate WFLD’s Chicago Bears pre and postgame show coverage, and was often a weekend sports news anchor there.

Here is the stupidest moment in Tv sports announcer history. It took place in Buffalo ( of course) when Bob Lanier of the Detroit Piston returned unexpectedly to Buffalo . Lanier was a local legend in WNY having played at St Bonaventure Ernie Warlick a former Bills and sportscaster for WGR is sent to the Buffalo airport to find out why Lanier is there Warlick interceptes Lanier at Airport and asks. “ So Bob why are you back home” Lanier reply’s “ I here for my mothers funeral “ Warlick says. Well it nice to see you back in Buffalo “ Lanier stares daggers spins on his heels and walk off leaving Warlick having to throw back to the studio. The newscasters were barely able to hold their laughter. Warlick didn’t last much longer

I'm a little late to the party but here's the actual clip from the game (kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYHPn3yMqJyojKM&ab_channel=OldTimeSportsFan). It happened about 47 minutes into the game (less the commercials) and it's nowhere near as nefarious as the media at the time made it out to be. I don't blame Jag here for anything because he went by the only information that was readily available to him at the time. The first newspaper clip that Jag showed around the 8:40 mark of this video states "Jiggetts wondered if Majkowski was dedicated enough to succeed in the NFL". In actually Jiggetts said nothing like that, the newspaper took his comments completely out of context. The newspaper did to Jiggetts what they were claiming he did to Majkowski. I watched the first half of the game and nothing else was said about this and it was about 30 minutes after Jiggetts comment when Majkowski was finally pulled from the game after going 2-11 at that point.

I like your point about announcers wrongly calling out defensive players for missing assignments. In one of the Giants' Super Bowl wins over NE (forget which one), they had a 12th player on the field for a key punt return later in the game. Nobody caught it because the wrong player came into the huddle late. But Belichek caught it and a challenge was successful, resulting in a key NE first down. I don't remember why now, but the announcers blamed Chase Blackburn, saying he shouldn't have been out there for the punt return. The cameras showed Blackburn on the sidelines, and the announcers ripped him, saying he shouldn't have been out there. I was furious because Blackburn was on all of NY's special teams that season, and was a standout. The Giants got the ball back and Manning led a great drive to win. Then the idiot announcers later said that saved Blackburn from being the goat. I was so mad. The truth came out afterwards...another Giant player had inexplicably come into the punt return huddle late, so nobody noticed. When the truth finally came out later, and was confirmed by the coaches, Blackburn was asked about it, and refused to throw his teammate under the bus by naming him. I never did find out who it was. I just was thankful Eli came back and got the score because I kind of like the Giants, but mostly because Blackburn would have been destroyed even worse had they lost. It was a terrible assumption for the announcers to make, plus it showed they hadn't prepared fully for the Super Bowl. Blackburn was one of the best special teams players in the league that year...and the announcers should have known he was on the PR team. Or, at least, they should have said they weren't sure who was responsible. Oafs.

The worst moment in CBS history? A 4th ranked game seen by less than 10% of the country! On the oldest of all the networks! With Sunday Ticket and the Red Zone channels, moments like these happen frequently. Sites like Awful Announcing report moments like these by midnight. Dan worked in Chicago so he developed a number of sources concerning teams in the Bears division. Did one such source feed him that, maybe. Did that worst moment immediately got Dan fired from the network? I'm still waiting..... BTW, Jiggetts left his WBBM Chicago anchor spot to go to the Fox Chicago newscast that was starting up. As for his post CBS career, Dan Jiggetts is about as straight shooter there is. But even straight shooters get it wrong,

And all this is why Brett favre is a hall of famer with the most interceptions ever. I always have had a Warren moon spiral, Marino release, Jim Kelly throw, hard pitch of elway, a Montana touch, Aikman tight, even learned Steve young left armed due to a broken wrist. All in highschool. I even learned of the Marino/jurgenson behind the back toss. I had the best arm on our FB team but coaches ruined it with the Nebraska option RB/with a cannon arm. To be fair I also was not the greatest leader in a huddle at that time.

So a visiting quarterback starts a game in Kansas City, completes only two passes, and his team wins. That’s the last time in NFL history that happened. The other starting quarterback in that Green Bay-Kansas City game was Frank Seurer. This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about how he got that start after some bizarre double talk from his coach Frank Gansz.

Finally... a Don Majkowski vid! He's also a GB legend because he's the Wally Pipp of pro football. It was his injury that caused Brett Favre's iron man streak. Not just that, but he played on stage with Poison at a concert in Milwaukee. He also flew in on his own dime to a release party at a Wisconsin brewery that named a beer after him because its abv was 7.7 (Majik switched to #7 after his rookie year).

This is a bad take because for all of your so called research you never looked into what Jiggetts might have said if there was a backlash, and it seems there was hardly a backlash, and it doesn't seem hard to think that Jiggetts may have simply misheard or misunderstood. I mean, there are gaffes in virtually EVERY sports game broadcast, and it seems like you were taking a minor kerfuffle and trying to make it as if it were a major scandal. You did the same with the MFF video where you simply didn't understand that Miami HC Shula would take a safety as if that was a regular thing in the early 70s. There, YOU took something out of its historical context just to bash MNF, but I can see, given your obvious youth, that the q may have never entered your mind. Yet you don't wanna give Jiggetts the same benefit of the doubt.

Is this a joke? What kind of BS is this? I went to UVA, a Major fan, and I don't even care. Jiggetts had a great 35+ year career in Chicago and his daughter is also in Chicago media. He did just fine just like Majik who went on to have that one great season. Find something more useful to be "outraged" about. By the way, James Brown went on to have a great media career as well. Both Brown and Jiggetts are Harvard graduates.

I have to take issue with this whole story. The main issue is that you are on here calling Dan Jiggets a liar based solely on what Don Majewski's response was. You never covered how Jiggets responded to the claim or his side of the story. Dan Jiggets is a Harvard graduate and a very intelligent person so I find it highly unlikely the man would just go on air and make something up and pass it off as truth. CBS must have been fine with his (Jiggets) version of the incident as not only did he continue as a color commentator for several years but also worked for the CBS owned and operated station in Chicago as a sports anchor for several years and years later worked for CBS owned radio station WSCR the score as a show host alongside Mike North. Normally your videos are informative and well thought out and I enjoy them very much, however today's video with its very one-sided narrative and missing information is very disappointing. This video almost seems like a hit job on Jiggets and almost like you have some kind of personal disliking of the guy. I hope your content rebounds from this one and is just a one off.

Keep in mind that Reggie Rucker also kept his analyst job at NBC Sports for several years after he told that baldfaced lie about having dinner with Sam Wyche, so Jiggets remaining at CBS, especially at one its radio stations and its Chicago O&O, WBBM, after he took Majkowski's comments out of context doesn't mean what you think it means.

People complain about today's announcers and analysts that cover NFL games but before the internet era there was some broadcasters that were like Reggie Rucker and Jiggets who lied or they were drunk on the air like Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier and Paul Hornung. Social media today would have a field day if that happened today and the moral of the story is the so called good old days were not all that good.
