@@2cool4fluoride But seriously, IDK why anybody ever buys a boat. My brother in law did, and it just sits in his garage 24/7. He actually uses it maybe 2-3 times a year, and boats are a pain the posterior to clean. Almost nothing is a bigger waste of a man's money than buying a boat if he doesn't live near water.

One other piece of information that should be mentioned. Back in those days, the clock would continue to run on a change of possession situation like a kickoff. Here is the entire original broadcast of the game. Notice that the Chargers call a timeout soon after recovering the onside kick. Taking that into account as well, it makes the onside kick decision even more curious. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5m4h4KsiZiDj6s

As another unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian, he also made a video about another chargers cardinals game, where the cardinals nearly came back from down 28 at the half on the road. The lost the game though due to a dropped pass on fourth and goal that would have given the cards the lead with about a minute left.

What's crazy is that with his approach, he would have looked worse had the kick succeeded. Kicking off from the 40, a successful onside kick would have had them with the ball at midfield. With the goalposts on the goal line, that's about a 55-60 yard FG. With most kickers still doing the straight on approach, that's probably out of range for most. But not by much. It wasn't like they'd need a 30 yard pass play to get into range or anything. This would be like trying a Hail Mary, getting a pass interference call and then just taking a knee.

Not necessarily. He came up then back down then the ball was snapped and he fumbled. A flag would be thrown and would be declined. Something similar happened in SBXV. The Eagles threw what appeared to be a tying TD but Harold Charmichael, who was in motion, turned up field a hair early and drew the flag negating the TD. Now if an offensive lineman did the same thing as in this game, then the flag is immediately thrown and the play blown dead as O-Lineman must not move until the ball is snapped.

I think Hollway just misspoke at the press conference, maybe blurring his thinking on the process that led to the onside kick (running out clock when they were in the lead, until Montgomery's fumble) to the actual kick itself. It makes no sense to be pondering time management strategy in a 17-second game.

Ironically, after being the Vikings defensive coordinator from '69-70 and their D-line coach 2 years before that, Hollway would rejoin the Vikings as DC from '78-85 just as they were losing all their top talent on that side of the ball.

I remember this game. And, yes, it was the stupidest onside kick in MNF history. The Cardinals attempted an on-side kick as a squib kick to prevent the long return. It was a total disaster and to my knowledge has never been repeated since. You didn't watch the original broadcast. I did. The call is indefensible. In fact, it was NOT an on-side kick. It was a pathetic attempt of a squib kick to prevent the long return. Also, the kicker's name is pronounced Baak-en, not Back-in.

An NFC East team was trailing in a road game to a team that scored 17 points. That NFC East team threw an interception in the final two minutes. Their opponents then botched a handoff that the NFC East team recovered. The NFC East team then scored a touchdown. That’s the last time this exact scenario happened in NFL history.

Also FWIW back then, even though the # of ties a team had were posted in published standings, they didn't count toward a team's winning percentage. In terms of their winning percentage it was as if the game never happened. It just so turns out the starting with the very next season ties counted for each team as half a game won and half a game lost.
@pullt
@pullt 3 жыл бұрын
A win is still best in either method, ie.... 9-5 (.642)is still better than 8-5-1 (.615 old, .607 new).... That rule nuance really only ended up ever mattering if a team had two ties (or in the very early NFL where teams played different numbers of games)

An alternate theory might be that he just brainfarted when asked about the play in the postgame interview after the still unlikely game winning FG drive won the Chargers the game. In those days coaches were far less media savvy, they didn't have postgame press conferences every game...no weekly radio show on 103.1 The SportsZone after DriveTime with Mickey and The Bull....no half hour TV show, etc, etc.... I've no way to know that happened, but could be plausible. "Shit, they got the ball back and scored....way better if we'd have recovered, etc, etc"

One Non Onside Kick decision has always struck me as odd-after the famous Garo Gaffe in Super Bowl VII, why didn't George Allen attempt an onside kick? You need a TD to tie and if it works, you have the ball in Miami territory with your timeouts. By not doing so, Washington got the ball back in their territory with about 1 minute left and no timeouts...and lost 14-7. Sure, Miami would be expecting the kick but if executed properly, Washington gets the ball.

I think people are reading too much into this... IF the Cards had got the onside kick you know dang well they would have attempted to go down and get the win. C'mon people... the coach was trying to think up anything he could to get off the stove top burner at the time he said that and he ended up causing the heat to be turned him higher much to his own personal disliking. Now... had this actually played out... THEN it would have been the dumbest onside kick in MNF history. Because who kicks an onside kick... recovers it.. and then runs the time out to enjoy the tie? No one. Only then would it have truly been a bone headed thing to do. But because they attempted to get the ball back it can always be viewed as a genuine attempt to avoid a tie and try to win. Had he kicked it deep... that would have been a "give up" play.

Going for it on 4th and 2 and then taking a knee to go to overtime makes sense to me. If you dont have a good bunch of plays that can push the ball far down field...but have a great run game, you want time... and not throw an interception. Plus you want to keep the ball out of the opposing teams hands. Its all situational. Lets say you are the Ravens vs KC...you know you cant throw a 50 yard TD...but you know you can pick up 2 yards 80% of the time on the ground...you also know Mahommes CAN throw 80 yard TDs all day...you would MUCH rather risk overtime then give Mahommes the ball with any time left on any part of the field...
