In week 2 of the 1976 NFL season, the Detroit Lions defeated the Atlanta Falcons. Moments after the game, Lions owner William Clay Ford announced that he was about to fire head coach Rick Forzano... despite the fact that the Lions won the game. This is the story behind the incredibly awkward, bizarre, and stupid press conference

Jerry Glanville is the name that makes me insane. He put together one of the great passing schemes in league history: the Lions almost couldn't be stopped. But Ford didn't like passing: he wanted smash mouth, old time football. So the Lions got rid of Glanville and most of the receiving talent he had accumulated. And lost, again, and again, and again.

The culture in the locker room is totally different now and the Lions have a lot of young players that are going to be really good in the next season or two. Also the Lions have 2 number 1 picks in the draft #2 and either #31/32 depending on what the Rams do in the Superbowl. Our GM Brad Holmes had a great first draft and also John Dorsey is a advisor to him and Dorsey has some great drafts in the past. I really believe in the next season or two the Lions will be perennial playoff contender!

And it seems that WCF overcompensated for this blunder in his later years. The last 20 years or so fans have been mystified when coaches and GMs with bad records were kept on longer than one would expect. In a more sane franchise, Matt Millen would have been fired as GM long before the Lions finally canned him. How bad was he? During Steve Mariucci's stint as HC in Detroit under Matt's tenure, got word that Drew Brees had interest in the Lions when one of his Chargers contracts was ending. Steve went in to Matt Millen's office and gave him the news. Matt, without any hesitation said "We're set with Joey Harrington at QB." Joey was traded to Miami by the end of Mariucci's stay in Detroit and was out of the league by 2009.

I created a point system to see which NFL teams gave the best bang for the buck. Starting in 1960; so many points are awarded for championships, division titles, wild card berths, etc.; and bonus points for winning seasons, but points deducted for losing seasons. At least lions won a few division titles and a playoff home under the hugging coach capt. wayne-0 fontes. lions were at least tuff in the silverdome and would put it together once thanksgiving game came around. Remember the red hot '95 team that won its last seven in a row after an 0-3 start going from 3-6 to 10-6. Then got whooped 58-37 at eagles as eagles score 31 pts. in second quarter, pick off scott mitchell 6 times as lions commit 7 turnovers as barry sanders is held to 40 yds. rushing. I gave up all hope after that season. Meanwhile capt. wayne-0 was out after '96 season. Then came bobby ross, the barry walk-out a day before '99 training camp, the ross walk out 9 games into '00 season, former um drunken coach moeller and the infamous stoney case in as starter for a crucial week 16 game for playoff vs bears, then matt millen and his array of m coaches, rod and 0-16, schwartzie and his throwing a challenge flag on an unchallegeble play, megatron walking out on lions in '16, caldwell sitting idly by and not challenging a key play late in bengal loss with lions still clinging to faintest of playoff hopes late '17 season, blah, blah, blah.... lions need to be nuked from the nfl landscape.

Damn Steve Bauer, your memory is just too good. I sometimes wonder if the Lions aren't controlled by some bookie playing crazy games with the over/under. The Lions can have great talent, and still not be able to win. And look at how many great players quit, not because of injury or not being at the top of their game, but because the front office screwed them over? Calvin Johnson and Barry Sanders are the two biggest ones on this list, but they are not alone.

Bill Ford was one who was too good hearted to get a GM & Head Coach to bring out the best in a team. That is why they haven't been to the playoffs a regular basis & never been to the Super Bowl. I have no idea why he stayed with Wayne Fontes either, except he Barry Sanders. What team wouldn't look good with Barry Sanders. Now his daughter is running the show & hopefully results will cast a change for the good.

I blame dan marino for some of that '90's misery. If marino doesn't blow out his achilles in '93 season scott #kn mitchell never comes in as a starter and looks like an all pro a few games. Then lions never foolishly throw all of that $$$ at mitchell as a free agent to be their starter. mitchell had one big season before morphing into one of the nfl's biggest f a busts at qb (not albert hainseworth bad but bad enough). That was brock osweillereque stupid on lions behalf. I remember a game early in '98 season when mitchell threw two bone head picks that cost lions a game vs. bengals. Bobby ross planted him to the bench for the rest of the season. He never starts a game for lions ever again. Lions should have just kept erik kramer at qb. He may not have had the arm mitchell did but he was a more efficient qb who led lions to their only playoff victory in 60 + years. Wandstatt and bears took notice of that victory and gave kramer a free agent deal after lions went with mitchell based on kramer picking the boys apart in that '91 playoff win wandstatt the bear coach saw first hand as boys d coordinator.
