I'm Italian, in 1984 I was 18 years old, and I was a DJ on a radio station, Style Council were all the rage, and right from their debut I immediately liked them, and thanks to them I discovered Curtis Mayfield (one of the greatest singer-songwriters of always) which Paul Weller said he was inspired in some way.

To sing punk with jam and soul/blues with style council is amazing

A lot of people dismissed Style Council because it wasn't as aggressive at the Jam. But this is such a solid band. Totally underrated. Love Weller. Dee C Lee too.

I think that The Style Council were dismissed by some for being too political as they didnt understand the lyrics
@redacted22753 жыл бұрын
@@jonathanhadley2555 No. The Style Council became political only in their later years... there was some interesting tunes, musically speaking, during this time but politics on Weller's lyrics coincided with TSC's least interesting phase: Weller's musical ideas were becoming more and more abstract, dull and kind of pretentious. Just look at the "Jerusalem" documentary, the minimalistic aka lazy "Confessions of a Pop Group" and finally their last album rejected by the label. This was the last straw for Weller, as he was also disenchanted with the Worker's Party and the Red Wedge artists in the late 80's. He dropped TSC and politics and began again from scratch. "Cafe Bleu" is a masterpiece, I love it as I love "All Mod Cons". "Walls Come Tumbling Down" was political and a hit... even "Changing of the Guard" from "Confessions..." is a beautiful song but it was two decades of Weller writing since his 17 years old... something's got to give eventually.
@redacted22753 жыл бұрын
TSC are definitely not underrated. They were bigger than The Jam in the USA... The Jam was huge in the UK, not so much worldwide. Japan worships TSC. Even in Latin America they had hit singles... but they were pop, they were treated as a pop band. The case of the fans of The Jam with the band is pungent, almost visceral: they were not only a band, they represented the Mod culture, the angsty of the working class, the pros and cons of life, existential wise. Plus 99% of the band's work is flawless, TSC not so much...

Loved the Style Coucil! My favorite next to the Jam. This song got me through a head injury. "When your down on your luck and your life's a fuc#, shout to the top," became my daily montra. It worked! Paul Weller is incredible and thanks mate for the many hours of joy you brought me.

Love this track. Nitpicking, but the tempo of this performance is too slow. Supposed to be a pacey song.

I still love The Jam and The Style Council. Their albums achieved great success, better Than The Jams. But could never understand why The Style Council never managed to have a UK Number 1 single. I think the highest they got to was a Number 3 With Long Hot Summer. When You think of everything Paul Weller has released throughout his career, I can’t understand why his last Number 1 he had, was with The Jam 39 years ago.

Sadly, I do not remember this band making much of a dent in the American market in their day. Too bad. I found that much of what they did is really rather remarkable. America's loss, I'd say.

Sounds way better in 4/4 not this swingy 12/8. Weller has not seen his Jam band mates since he left 40 years ago, he's not bitter at all
Its mellow tune with a political message but the use of that Ricky gives it a passive aggressive feel its genius.
