A lot of the music that came out back in the 70s wasn't just cool or soulful or earthy, it was downright spiritual. There will never be another era of music that was a special as the 70s were.

Personally I blame the 80s for prioritizing style over substance more than anything. I'm not saying it didn't happen before but there's something to be said hen the music videos were more so the focus than the music.

That hollow sound you were asking about is made with a conga drum and it's called a glissando. You make it by striking the drum with one hand and lightly letting your middle finger (supported by your thumb) slide over the top of the drum head while it's vibrating. The sound is the harmonic that's created by the slide. Also, that's not a vibraphone on the track. It's a marimba.

Aah, I thought it was a bongo/conga or something, but i thought they had put some kind of effect on it. I didn't know they could make that sound naturally.

I just watched this again. First off, you are beautiful! Second, the reason why I picked this song as song of the week is not just because I like The Stylistics. Listen to the words carefully. It is about the generation gap that existed at that time. One line is" blaming it on longer hair". Our parents were blaming kids with long hair of that time because we were protesting many things. Racism, the Vietnam War, pollution (which is in the song) and many other things. It's just a great song at many levels.

Oh, my. Thanks for sharing that sad news, Ramsey Lewis.. By this comment here, I can only assume that you know that Ramey Lewis also performed this song... I think in studio, too, but my favorite recording of Ramsey Lewis doing this song is a bit hard to find these days... it was on a Soundtrack called "Save the Children" which was a project of the Rainbow Coalition, a stage event, and Ramsey did this track so chill... no vocals, of course, just instrumental, it had all the outdoor jazz festival background... extremely mellow and low key, just a lovely lovely track. "Save the Children" was a double LP was on vinyl in the 70's, but then it went out of print... don't know if it ever made it to CD. A pretty cool collection of various artists doing their stage performances. Me, I have the vinyl, and it can be found if you try...

Yes; The Songwriting Duo Bell & Creed was Thom Bell and Linda Creed, they wrote alot of hits for the Stylistics and other acts working with Arrangers Gamble & Huff. Together they Opitomized Philadelphia Soul that was a Mainstay on AM Radio. Bell & Creed are Credited with "You make me feel Brand new; You are everything, Betcha by Golly Wow, Break up to Make Up, Can't give you everything, Stop, Look, Listen to your Heart, Hurry up this way again, I'm stone in love with you, Lets put it all together," Bell & Creed also wrote "Didn't I blow your mind this time" by the Delfonics. Linda Creed was White, I thought she was Black. Vinyl Grooves could barely contain how much Soul she had. While battling Breast Cancer she wrote "The Greatest love of all," recorded by George Benson & Whitney Houston, Sadly, she died at age 38. Thanks Angela.

That sound you were wondering about it's made from a Conga drum. When you press down in the center of it it makes that sound. It's a cool sound my friend used to play conga drums in a Latin band and he used to make that sound a lot. It was cool back in the 70s 80s

Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff were the creators of the, Philly Sound. They meshed orchestral arrangements with solid RnB rhythms to create theirs signature sound. Back in the 70’s, all schools had music classes. So we knew an Oboe from a flute and a Violin from a Cello. Now, people use Autotunes to create music. But they can’t name an instrument outside drums, guitar and piano. Long live the 70’s music!
