The subinguinal space or the pelvifemoral space is a space between hip bone posteriorly, and inguinal ligament anteriorly. The inguinal ligament extends from the anterior superior iliac spine to the pubic tubercle.
Another important ligament in this region called the ilioinguinal ligament is a fibrous band extending from the inferior aspect of the inguinal ligament to the iliopectineal eminence and divides this space into two parts. A large lateral part called lacuna musculorum and a smaller medial part called lacuna vasculorum.
Through lacuna musculorum are passing the following structures: The Iliacus and psoas major muscles. The femoral nerve passes anterior to those muscles, while the lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh passes just medial to the anterior superior iliac spine.
The medialy located lacuna vaculorum contains the femoral vessels enclosed in the femoral sheath. The femoral sheath is divided into three compartments by two fibrous septa. The lateral compartment lodges the femoral artery and the femoral branch of genitofemoral nerve. The middle compartment contains the femoral vein, and lastly, the medial compartment which is called the femoral canal, contains lymphatic vessels and the lymph node of Cloquet/Rossenmuller. Medialy to the femoral canal is the lacunar ligment of cooper. The pectineal ligament is an extension of the lacunar ligament and runs on the pectineal line of the pubic bone. The pectineal ligament is the posterior border of the femoral canal.
