For learners with a German backdrop it might be helpful to get clarity about a distinction. The subjunctive (mood) is something that is related to the Konjunktiv (conditional), actually it's the common translation. But you'll suffer shipwreck if you identify the first with the latter. The subjunctive is limited to if-clauses and the situations explained here, as far as I understand it. The biggest difficulty might be that there is no separate verb form for the conditional. If I were you = wenn ich du wäre (there is no word for "wäre" in English other than "were" which is the past of "be" = waren). In other words, depending on the context, were could be "waren" or (far less often) "wäre". What I'm really curious about is whether English had a verb form in the past like in the related other Germanic language.
