I have always been a big fan of English grammar. I don't know why? 😀 That's why, perhaps, I decide to click on this video, besides, the Subjunctive mood is kind of tricky to master. Therefore, it is worth gaining more knowledge. The video is useful and helpful. Thanks.

I like grammar too haha. You are right: the subjunctive mood is tricky. The good news is that it is a bit unnecessary. Consider it a "bonus" grammar; something that sounds good to English speakers but you don't actually need it. Thanks for the comment and the kind words! -Lliam

Hi Liam You made it quite easy for us to understand how to use this mood correctly. I still have some confusion, like if someone say go there you find him there, and in reply hypothetically i say if he is not there what should i do. That would be ok or i would have to say, if he were not there what would i do. Thanks
@GrammarSimplewithLliam
@GrammarSimplewithLliam Жыл бұрын
Good question! You are correct: "If he is not there, what should I do?" This is called the FIRST CONDITIONAL, which is used to talk about something that is LIKELY to happen around now or in the near future. The SECOND CONDITIONAL (the grammar used in the subjunctive mood) talks about situations that are completely unreal or very unlikely to happen -- or to give advice ("If I were you...") Since the example you wrote is likely to happen (in fact because you will be surprised if he is not there), the FIRST CONDITIONAL is correct. - L

Hi liam Could you please explain such as and as such in a simple way as you always did? Thanks
@GrammarSimplewithLliam
@GrammarSimplewithLliam Жыл бұрын
"such as" usually introduces an example: "I like many vegetables such as broccoli, asparagus, spinach, and carrots." "as such" takes the place of something already stated (to avoid repetition): I could say, "I am a teacher. As a teacher, I care about my students learning." However, this is repetitive. It's perhaps better to say, "I am a teacher. As such, I care about my students learning." In this case, "as such" means "as a teacher" Hope that helps! - Lliam

In this video, at 2:32, you said, 'I recommend you watch until the end'. Would you please tell me if this sentence correct? Can we use the word 'recommend' this way, or in this structure: subject + recommend + object? Please clarify. Thanks.
@GrammarSimplewithLliam
@GrammarSimplewithLliam 5 ай бұрын
Great question! A perfect sentence would be "I recommend you watch THE/THIS VIDEO until the end." In my sentence, I omitted the object "video" because it was implied. It is correct; however, adding in the object "video" is perhaps more clear.

I learned that the conditional is also a mode (i.e., mood), since it is not the present, the past, or the future. Your thoughts? The infinitive used to be called a mode as well I believe. Just a few minutes in... interesting that this showed up in my feed!
@GrammarSimplewithLliam
@GrammarSimplewithLliam Жыл бұрын
Yes, I think you are correct about conditionals. They are mostly abstract ideas, so you could call them a mood or mode (I think mode is better), similar to the subjunctive. I chose to focus on the three common moods for simplicity, but I will make videos about all the conditionals in the future. Thanks for the comment! -L

Hello Dear Lliam , I hope you are doing well . I love your teaching style . maybe grammar terminology is a little unnecessary , because when I would like to use [used to] for instance ,I really don't care about the name of the structure . again thank you SO much for your time and efforts . BR
@GrammarSimplewithLliam

Thanks for the comment! Yes, I do agree that the terminology can be a little unnecessary (too many things to remember that you will not use in your day-to-day life haha). You do not need to remember the names of the structures, only the grammar itself. Thanks for watching and the kind words! - L

How could i use subjunctive there.. Suppose I'm watching a video and make a wish "I wish i were there" or I wish i could be there" and it's raining outside "I wish it stopped raining" or "I wish it would stop raining" now here so many people gives their opinions some says do use would when you feel annoying with something but how could i be annoyed of raining? I just want that rain to stop but most of people tells to use "Would" for raining so?
@GrammarSimplewithLliam
@GrammarSimplewithLliam Жыл бұрын
In my opinion "I wish it stopped raining" and "I wish it would stop raining" have basically the same meaning, but I would use the second one. The tone of voice expresses feeling annoyed, too. "I wish I were there" expresses a wish or (kind of like a daydream) and the tone of voice might be pleasant-sounding. On the other hand, "I wish it would stop raining" might sound angry or frustrated -- i.e. annoyed. Maybe you have to walk to work and you realize that your umbrella is broken. You might feel annoyed and "wish it would stop raining" because it would make your life easier. Hope that helps. - L

@@GrammarSimplewithLliam Ohhhh thanks but then when should i use "I wish it stopped raining" ?? I want the same explanation you have given for WOULD one and also for "Were" one like *daydream* relates to current situation and *perhaps wish + Simple past tense* could also relate with the same but i want explanation so i could understand the difference between them 🙏

@@nirajthakor9748I am wondering if I might dare to say what think about it. "I wish it stopped raining" is not natural. If you said " I wish I worked in this company", your sentence would be natural because this means you don't work in this company now ,but you are expecting a different situation for you in the present. Stopping of rain is one time unplanned / unarranged future action, so use "I wish + would+..."" instead of "I wish + past simple " " I wish it would stop raining" means It is raining , and you think it will not stop raining, so you wish it would stop
