I remember my old music teacher in middle school actually explained it to us in class one day. I guess he got in a car accident, and the theory was that he died in it, but they hid that fact and just said he was mildly injured. The most famous example is on the cover where they’re crossing the street. I was the only one not wearing shoes and I believe his outfit is pretty different from the rest too. So of course, that was just subliminal confirmation that he was dead.

When I was younger I went through a phase of being very fascinated with, but a little freaked out by, the concept of subliminal messages in media. One night I watched a bunch of videos about subliminal messages and afterwards I was really shaky and didn't know why and had to wake my parents up because I didn't know what was going on. In hindsight, I think I had triggered some sort of physical anxiety symptom.

I think that the only true subliminal messages here are the SFX one, the shopping music, and maybe the RATS one. Everything else is either an Easter egg/sneaky joke, coincidence, or creative storytelling. Something to keep in mind, in regards to The Exorcist, which is exactly what my grandma and parents told me and my siblings, who all were raised on horror movies: you need to remember that there weren't a lot of horror movies like the Exorcist back in the day. They didn't have the stuff we have now. It's exactly like when we grow up with movies that had scenes that scared us, like Mirrors, and then we'd show younger kids it and they'd go "eh. it's not that scary. For the Paul is dead theory: if I remember correctly, it started as a fake rumor by a college newspaper but would then gain traction (and this is while they were still making music in the mid-to-late 60s); the initial rumor stated a few examples of “proof”, but was later stated to all be made up. The story basically goes that during a session one day paul angrily left, and later got in a car accident. Fearing the public response to this, they covered it up and replaced paul with a look-alike; billy shears. Due to guilt, the other beatles hid secrets for the fans to find. Examples include of course “turn me on dead man” from revolution 9, secrets in the sgt peppers album cover, abbey road’s album cover, John apparently saying “I buried paul” at the end of strawberry fields forever, etc. again, it’s all bogus but some people really do believe this 😆 The whole thing would also be referenced by John in his song “How Do You Sleep?”

Beatles fan here: We have some "interesting" people who believe the Paul died in a car accident in 1966 and was replaced by Billy Shears. It's stupid but I get a good laugh about it. The whole song is basically just a jumble of audio clippings from other songs, like While my guitar gently weeps, and the phrase number 9 is, if I remember correctly, George Martin, the producer. I'm not gonna get into the Paul is Dead theory, but basically a lot of people think that the whole song was written to prove that Paul was dead and Billy had taken over. There are lots of videos and pictures of "proof" but I find them funny tbh. As for the song, it just makes me laugh every time I hear it.

I remember in highschool somebody came into my social studies class to talk about linguistics around the US, and brought up a video going through all American presidents, and as it got closer to present time, I SWEAR I saw glimpses of pictures like a skull and bones (like pirate flags) and pictures with text that I can't *exactly* remember because I've been out of high school for three years. I think it was supposed to be something about the presidents/US getting worse, like less honorable over time or something. I was looking around to see if anybody also saw that, but nobody else seemed to see anything out of the ordinary. I didn't end up saying anything because, 1) how do you bring that up, and 2) I don't think they'd take valuable time to go through the video frame by frame when the person was paid to talk about something else. So that's my only experience with possible subliminal messages. I think. (BTW, I love the use of Ib music! My favorite rpg horror game.
