26 year Navy veteran. I spent 1 afternoon in a submerged sub. There’s something vital about fresh air.

20 years Navy. 9 years of that was 637 class Subs. They kept the oxygen level low to prevent fires. When we would surface and ventilate every one perked up. Butane lighters didn't work so I got an electric lighter.

My 24 hour experience on a conventional US Navy Submarine included her running below the surface with the snorkel up, and diesel engines running. Waves splashing on the snorkel resulted in it closing for a few seconds then opening back up. All the time the diesel engines were running so the air pressure inside was like climbing to 5000++ feet then suddenly dropping back to sea level, my ears were ringing for weeks after.

8 years in the navy, 4 years aboard the Kamehameha as an A-ganger, fresh air was overrated in my opinion. After all, we made our own o2.

I love the military naval history that you research and present. Great idea, presented respectably and honestly. Fascinating profiles, short and sweet.

I read the book about Momson and his detailed experiences. He said that when the rescue bell arrived, they discovered to their horror, that the support cable was badly damaged and frayed in several sections. They had to make an agonizing decision, use the rescue bell and risk losing it or not using it because of the terrible condition the cable was in.

Grew up in Portsmouth, after joining the Navy I didn't want anything to do with submarines. Had a few friends without fathers because of them. My grandmother worked at the shipyard installing radar in the boats during the war.

What caused the sub to originally sink? It's also surprising that the sub sank so many ships with the those Mk14 torpedoes as they were supposed to have a failure rate of 50-80%.

Why did submarines continually torpedo mortally wounded ships until they sank instead of heading for other ships?
@mikebikekite1
@mikebikekite1 12 күн бұрын
Stricken ships can be towed to a nearby port for repairs. With ships like aircraft carriers, you want to remove all chances that the ship will survive. A few extra torpedoes is a small price to pay for removing such an expensive asset. Ships are also much faster than submarines so there was little chance of chasing after other targets. If the other ships want to stay, then thy're likely going to be hunting you rather than the other way round.

Combat SOP; some torpedoed ships could eventually be towed and repaired.

Dude is always sounding like his taking a dump..get that thing out! So did it have a hole or open valve because you shouted like 5 separate leaks. It didn’t have a hole, it has a pipe above the engines.
