Great song Jeremy! I brought my cello aboard the USS Thomas Jefferson, SSBN 618 on a patrol in the late 1960's. The XO told me, "You're not bringing that onboard my submarine!". I said, "There's only one problem with that, sir, it's not your submarine. The CO told me I could stow it in his stateroom." I was an RM3 at the time and my fellow crew members didn't warm up to my cello until that famous day when I got together with a guitar player, such as yourself, on the mess decks and we played songs from a Beatles song book he had. At the end of playing "Yesterday" I had them. They liked the cello after that. I retired RM1(SS) in 1986.

Talking about the PIM, I was a nuc on Skipjack in the 70s, fubar command, just fricking fubar. Forwards used to play a game driving the boat called the “360 Club” - goal is to see if you can slowly drive a circle and on the midwatch while some JO, green as hell has no idea what’s going on! Actually saw it done several times... this boat was in the yards in 75 , just out when I got there.. i literally arrive 1st day, push button E-5, no idea what’s going on and see these officers, all wearing scrambled eggs, comin across the brow, they’re announcing them off, I got no idea, WTF, so I ask the topside watch and he tells me Skipjack had the highest divorce rate of any command IN THE NAVY for 1975, these guys are just getting done with the CO. Totally fubar!! Went to the Med, We’re in La Mod, and the cook throws the XOs door overboard in 180 ft of water, then our diver lames up, refuses to dive, so they had to get the diver off the Kamehameha to dive.. and this is after the chief and JOs on duty searched the whole ship twice- what a show!! We kept telling them it went over, but no one believed us... same trip we’re at Naples, black water cesspool, and the super old hookers, I mean OLD lady’s, the camp-fire girls, chase YOU up and down the streets of Naples trying to get you to pick them up.. called em camp-fire girls cause they were old homeless hookers and they’d burn tires on the street corners to stay warm.. you’d be out lookin for a bar, see that black tire smoke in the air a few blocks ahead and just do a 180!! Got sidetracked there, what I was going to say was that trip, while in Naples, somehow, someone met somebody seriously senior in position at Beretta- yeah the gun maker Beretta!! , so he invited the crew for a special tour later that week- when the day comes I have duty, stuck watching the Rx (reactor) and these guy who went come back with just a SHITLOAD OF WEAPONS, all just excellent looking, shotguns, rifles, with these hand engraved hunting scenes, handguns, and they got them all at some huge huge discount cause this guy liked the us or our sub, some BS, but like dirt cheap on sailors pay.. so the captain has TMs pull a fish and they stuffthe torpedo tube to the hilt with all these weapons!! Did the rest of tour time in the Med without one tube.. and we come back to Groton, CO gets on the 1 MC and says to say NOTHING on our customs forms (Navy used to have US customs meet boats coming off deployment, fill out the forms same as civilians when you travel overseas. So the whole crew of the sub is in on us smugglin I’d guess a hundred plus firearms into the US! About 3 months later were at quarters and the COB says “if you have extra stuff in theTorpedo Room, today’s the day to take it off- so they did! Nothing ever happened either, nothing was said.. that was a small piece of my navy..
