love the review! this movie reminds me lot of others just after the first watch: requiem for a dream, 1973's carrie, John carpenter's the thing...if greta gerwig builds a dream with barbie, coralie fargeat tears everything down, an anti oppression message through body horror, the 'respect the balance' line could be metaphorical for so many things.

Hey fellas, loved your reaction!! Deliciously disgusting this film is! It has style+substance🧪💉A social commentary on aging with body horror elements using practical effects, impeccable sound+editing. No amount of change will ever be enough to appease everyone much less undeserving, misogynistic men who do not actually appreciate women for who they are, but only how fckable they deem women to be. Sue represents the younger version of Elisabeth, still impressionable, full of faux confidence bc the patriarchy has beholden a woman’s value to beauty and youth, still fertile. Elisabeth chases her youth in the form of Sue much like someone that keeps running back to the plastic surgeon’s office. And there are consequences bc one begins to stray so far from their original appearance, dare I say monstrous. The violence we put ourselves through comparing ourselves to our own younger version of ourselves when we look at pics of us a decade ago. We must be kinder to ourselves. I like that her yellow coat symbolized the egg in the beginning and then we see Sue wearing the coat to emphasize they are one post injection. *Outward beauty, but inner ugliness to thyself

There were two couples in the theatre . One left midway through becuase they were disgusted and the other couple…. While also DISGUSTED .. while the rest of us cinifiles smile with glee… the other couple stayed. And they were rather old. They were horrified and said THIS IS STUPID this is ridiculous .. but….. they STAYED… I think that speaks volumes to a movie like this especially as LONG as it is. That says something

"Stylized" is such an interesting--and likely very apt--description. The images I've seen so far of "The Substance" (both the moving and still shots) remind me of some of the colors & visuals of Emerald Fennell's "Promising Young Woman" mixed with Stanley Kubrick's fare (like the hall scene in "The Shining" or some of the things in "2001: A Space Odyssey"), but Coralie Fargeat's pace is much more frenetic (it seems). I wonder if this film will be too much for me body-horror-wise, but I love the IDEA of it. Just the shrimp eating scene in the trailer, though, is quite grotesque. I love women directors making bold, visionary movies. Another I loved was Julia Ducournau's "Raw." And I like Lynne Ramsey a lot, although stylistically she's very different. Thank you for your channel and for reviewing this film.

This film reminded me of Ducournau as well but with more pop, style, and a bit less seriousness. She is an A+ filmmaker too. Ramsay is one of my all time favorite filmmakers - I love how details and immense and immersive her films are, but I wish she made them a bit more often!

That's so funny that you said that, because Benjamin Kracun is the cinematographer for this film, and he was also responsible for the cinematography in Promising Young Woman. 👌👌👌

I saw the movie last night. (Sunday September 23rd). I had the same wauestion "No one ever pays for the drug / product But as they are used for these experimentations, one has to think that the drug is free. (Also, "Sue" can be for "use" (used). Note: All the posters that we see of Demi Moore were real posters which were selling in stores during - for start - her period after she had portrayed Jackie Templeton on the US soap General Hospital (ABC) from 1982 to 1984. WARNING - SPOILERS: As always, seeing a child (the little girl in the audience for the January 1st show) in the movie made me mad. I know that children who are in horror movies are followed by professionals while the movie is being made, their parents also, but still, these children are probably very scared to do horror scenes... Even for thousands of dollars, if I had children, I would never let them do horror movies. Also, the recipe book that Elisabeth is being given comes from a French cook. The movie producer is also French. Also, I loved when Sue tells her upcoming new boss "I have to take care of my mother", which was true, Elisabeth is her mother. The bathroom is gorgeous, but it is very much copied on the white tiles room in the very first "Saw" movie.
