I recently saw this movie and it is spectacular. Demi Moore is brilliant in it and Margaret Qualley also excellent. What I loved about the film were the deeper meanings and lessons within it. That as women (in particular) the 'younger version' of ourselves beats up our older self for not being good enough. That we must maintain that youth or we are deemed unworthy, useless and on the scrap heap of life. There are some really poignant and moving moments in it where Elizabeth is told she is still beautiful, but her own self-hatred won't allow herself to believe it. This isn't just a gore fest, this is a perceptive film on aging, self-esteem, the way we punish ourselves as women and how society perceives the older woman. WATCH IT. You will not be disappointed. Oh, and by the way. Demi Moore deserves an Oscar for this film.

Demi Moore is incredible in it. For someone who has built a career on her looks over her acting talent - let's be honest - she dug her teeth into this role and went all-in on the craziness, and it's utterly magnetic to watch her on this emotional rollercoaster of a movie. She absolutely deserves an Oscar nod for it.

@@mariarohmer2374 You can be beautiful AND a good person. Contrary to popular belief (not helped by films like this that demonise and ridicule any woman who wants to stay young and beautiful) the two arent mutually exclusive. People just don't seem to get how much looks impact confidence. No matter how much people want to deny it , its an inescapable truth and no one should be judged for wanting to get work done so they can feel better about themselves. It doesnt make them selfish, despite what many people think

No matter what a woman over 40 or a highly desired woman does, it will be spun in a negative way, especially our appearance because our looks aren't actually about our looks, they're about our domination, consumption, discard and (for high value targets) ultimate destruction. Our aesthetic is merely a vehicle for hopelessly pathological minds to attempt to consume what they think is our power.

This movie was 110% worth the watch. I was intrigued by the trailer, but nothing can quite prepare you for the experience this film provides. It’s horror in a way that is evocative and unique and BEYOND STRANGE- be prepared for weird with this one! You may not shriek in fear, but you will cringe with discomfort, and if you’re a woman (or lots of men too!) you will definitely relate to some piece of it. The crescendo near the end reminded me of the "2001 Space Odyessy" scene near the end where "Dave" is in his capsule going 1000 mph thru a cosmic soup of sounds and light, but in Substance, it's done with new tech and amazing soundtrack blasting a cacophany of music loud thru great sound system.... you can't prepare yourself for that journey.

The film's opening scene was incredibly effective-it gave me all the information I needed without explicitly saying much. It begins with a shot of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, zoomed in on the protagonist's star. We see the star when it's freshly placed, with crowds flocking around, taking pictures, and celebrating the protagonist's success. As the years pass, the star begins to crack, and people walk over it, dropping trash without noticing whose name it bears. This simple, visual storytelling brilliantly set up the backstory of Elisabeth, the protagonist. Visually, this is easily the most striking film I've seen this year. Each shot feels meticulously crafted to serve the narrative, and honestly, it's so beautiful that every frame could stand on its own as a painting. The frequent close-ups were especially effective, adding a layer of intensity and creepiness to certain scenes. The color grading was perfect, enhancing the film's atmosphere. It's truly a visual masterpiece. The story and writing are incredibly clever. I don't think I've ever seen a film with such a creative narrative. In an age where original ideas feel scarce, this movie felt like a breath of fresh air-gripping from start to finish. The way it tackles ageism in Hollywood, particularly how it affects women, through a blend of camp, horror, and dark comedy, was both smart and unique. Even though many of the characters didn't have much dialogue, they were all memorable and stuck with me long after the film ended. The cast is fantastic, starting with Demi Moore, who likely drew on her own experiences with Hollywood's obsession with looks and aging. This is one of her best performances, and she deserves all the praise for it. There's a particular moment-without giving too much away-where her character ages further, and it was mesmerizing to watch. Margaret Qualley also shines in her role as Sue, a fame-hungry, egotistical character willing to do anything to get ahead. The contrast between the two characters, who are ultimately reflections of the same person, highlights how we can be our own harshest critics and how societal views on aging and appearance can deeply affect us. The rest of the cast delivers solid performances as well. Overall, this is my favorite film of the year so far!

I saw it ALONE in an empty cinema and it was the craziest experience ever - I almost left halfway through it was so full on (glad I stayed for the whole thing). This is definitely not an 'everyone' film, some people won't get it and others will discard it as a meaningless gore film but they are so very wrong. The Substance is unlike any film I've ever seen or will probably ever see again, it delivers its message in the most brutal, raw, absurd, and blatant way. It tackles such a current issue like beauty standards and body image perfectly, and makes you feel unsettled in a way that you can appreciate.
