Being a Panamanian that was married to a Marine that was stationed on Howard AFB and seeing this video brings back so many memories and also gives me a feeling of disappointment. I mention disappointment to see all that housing just going to waste, the hospital and all the other places and spaces that in all these years could have been put to good use. Can you imagine seeing a thriving medical city in that same space where the hospital was? Not to say the many families that could have lived there if the housing was offered at a price that Panamanians could afford. I left here in 1984 and came back in 2015. I now live in the city full time and love it, but regret seeing all the waste and little progress.

I feel the same way. I was stationed on Howard in the late 90's. I was an Air Force cop and patrolled the entire base. My favorite duty station.

Being from Panama City, Panama I did remembered 25 years ago that former Howard Air Force Base was about to close down because the panamenia government was about to take over not just Howard, Fort Clayton, Albrook, and Fort Davis which the people who was in the military had to leave Panama. I will always have good memories of Howard and I love how everything is now.

When in the USAF there (1984-1987), I lived in Albrook but worked in Howard AFB (24 CAMS). This brings back wonderful memories. The housing units in Albrook were the same (as you know) and they were solid and very comfortable. I like that they were on concrete pillars with the carport underneath. The unit I lived in also had -what we called back then - a maids quarters below. In Howard, there was a very nice gym and I remember that hospital (Antiguo). Surprised nothing was done with it. I remember the coatimundis, the sloths, the heat, the humidity, the rain, the lush green vegetation, great fishing, the traffic, and car horns. After about three months I got used to the heat 🥵 and humidity and driving my 1977 Cutlass Supreme there. 😊 I do not recall mosquitoes being a big problem, thanks to Dr. William Gorgas. But those nearly microscopic sand fleas! Well done! 🙏

I lived in Panama from 1980-1984. As a kid it was great. My father was stationed at Quarry Heights and we lived in Balboa, then Clayton then Howard. As a child it was amazing. We rode our bikes all over the bases, and when at Balboa used to climb up what I thought at the time was a huge stairway up to the top. How we never got bit by snakes I don't know. I was chased by an iguana once even. I think I remember Clayton had the best PX. Housing we had at Balboa was like a townhouse, then a 1 story ranch style house at Clayton, then one of the big houses on stilts with carport and maid quarters underneath. I think it took 18 months to get officer housing at Howard. During Christmas Santa would roll around neighborhoods on a tank throwing out candy.

Wow, that was our old house at the bottom of Howard Clinic hill, behind the bus stop, incredible to see it again. SO many great memories there, the wildlife you would hear at night with the windows open was incredible, Kudamunda monkeys across the street , sloths , wild parrots, snapping turtles, fishing at Lake Gatun. We used to skate and ride our bikes down Howard Hill, at the rear of the hospital you could see the whole jungle valley all the way out to the bridge, we got avacados from a huge tree behind the hospital. Good times, thanks again for showing this base. Never thought I would see our old house again. Napoli pizza downtown was the best pizza I've still had thus far. That fresh bread they used to have!!!!

Prices are not bad in Panama! Its a nice neighborhood, I like the scene of green landscape and palm trees. I live in San Francisco and the cheapest condo here with no bedroom, just living room, small kitchen and bathroom the purchase price is $ 765K.

My grandad was an ambulance driver. Him and my uncle lived on the base.

Having bought a home in Panama I've found banking here is antiquated. Getting a mortgage is definitely, almost impossible and trying to pull some equity out of a home seem to be unheard of, UNLESS, of course, you know somebody who know somebody, who know somebody.

Interesting location. How far is it from Panama City? It looks like you'd need to have a car if you live there.
@AbroadAbility4 ай бұрын
I think you need a car there as well. Howard is located under 20 minutes from the city depending on traffic.

Are there any busses that connect these neighborhoods to Panama City if you don't want to have a car?

Hey Aisha, I noticed Mike didn't mention the free E-bus service we have within the community for the residents. We also have a service called Muver, it's like Uber but for our area. Also Taxis are about $1.50 to get around the community and you can get a bus to Albrook for $1

And the metro connecting us to the city should be finished by 2025 they say

There are new developments all over the country with pretty nice houses starting at 75k. But you'd be surprised at how many Panamanians live in Panama Pacifico and Howard and even the most exclusive neighborhoods.
