yep, do I love it? No. Do I want it? Probably not. Is it cool? Most definitely. Once again, no one is forcing anyone to buy the watch so I have no issues with it. Often, in a modern highly commercialized world, the uniqueness and icon of a product is more important that the function or even looks. For a modern luxury mechanical watch, that is especially important as things such as METAS certification are not enough to persuade customers to make a purchase decision in this highly competitive market. There is a reason why every Speedy and Submariner looks the same as the previous one

The current Seamaster 300 is truly a watch that you have to try on. It is a large watch, yet the lug configuration and bracelet allow it to sit quite well on a 177mm wrist. It definitely draws you in, especially the blue dial. Waiting for the opportunity to try on the 'Great White' and decide from there. It may not be an investment watch, but it can be a passion watch.

Such a well made video. All of your points are spot on. The skeletonized hands as you say take up the negative space and adds to it's character. The HE valve also adds to it's character. Mine fits beautifully on my 7 inch wrists. I have to say the Seamaster 300M is the diver that will define this century not the Submariner.

InChrist87 Agreed completely. When everybody is using an inductive charger the size of a mattress to charge their EV, having a movement that is particularly susceptible to magnetism (cough ROLEX cough) will be a true anachronism.... and not a charming one.

Thank you for the comment, man. I think all of the elements they've included adds to the package (and removing what made the 90's piece so iconic would be a mistake) As for the watch being the end-all defining watch of the century, it is hard to tell. The Sub and the Seamaster are two different animals (both are very historically significant without a doubt)

Omega have shown Rolex for what they really are, a company who thrive on their name, selling the likes of the sub way over priced for what you get. Omega Seamaster 300m is amazing value for your money and a much better watch both in looks, style and movement. This year the Seamaster 300m has gone up in price by £400 in line via demand though the customer will have no problem getting the watch from Omega. This watch is quickly becoming the wearable dive watch to buy, even Bond Movies see style and roughness since Brosnan up to today's latest releases. Not buying this may be something you will regret some day, as I'm not surprised if this becomes a classic.

I have to disagree about the 42mm being too big, and the 13.5mm depth being too thick. (I have a Tag at 41mm and 12mm thick, and it feels on the small size. I am not even a large wristed person.) Once you own a larger watch, and I do, 41mm is nothing. Also once you get used to looking at this watch, the He valve disappears. When I think back to the original first version of the Seamaster Pro, I thought the He valve stuck out. In time it vanished, and was nothing more than another gorgeous stainless steel adornment.

I just purchased the great white SMP. The helium escape valve is ok for me design-wise. The main problem I have with it is that is snags my wrist hairs. I wasn't expecting this but the machining is generally sharp on this watch, and the HEV has particularly sharp corners. Otherwise, the watch is fantastic. It's been running at 0 s/d on the wrist w/o precautions of any kind on my part as far as leaving it resting in one position or another. Phenomenal.

Great review. I actually really like the hands, I think they are part of the character of the watch. Less keen on the escape valve, but it is also part of its character, so I can appreciate why Omega stick with it. I have often seen owners commenting that u kind of don't really notice it once u start wearing your Seamaster on a regular basis anyway. I love the Great White, the Bond blue and the silver dial. The ‘Bond’ Seamaster has truly made a positive impact on the watch enthusiasts community. I know people who have owned them, traded them in to buy a Submariner and are now buying the Seamaster again as they tell me it is the most comfortable watch that they have worn. The strap options offered by Omega really should send signals to Rolex that they should offer different strap options on their watches too but, we are talking about the stubborn, ultra conservative Rolex here so, that is highly unlikely. The ‘Great White’ looks like a lovely dial option and I’m sure that it will appeal to many who can’t obtain a ‘Polar Explorer II’. I look forward to seeing one myself. A great observational breakdown of this watch here from the go to watch channel on KZbin. Top marks my friend! ✊

One thing that I've noticed that I haven't seen anyone mention is that the rhodium plated silver/white gold indices just has a shimmer that I haven't seen on any other timepiece. My Tudor black bay definitely doesn't do that.

I own the Great White version and love it. And agree that it would be the perfect watch if it were 40mm. The Great White has a similar vibe to my 40mm Rolex Explorer II 16570 polar dial, which I probably wear at least twice as much as my 300M. If the Omega were 40mm, it would wear better on my (very average) 7-1/4 inch wrist and would probably replace the 16570 as my “go to” watch.

The one I was struck by was the gray wavy dial version. Not as much pop as the great white but still a strong contrast. As I looked at it more and more, it struck me as almost the perfect dressy sports watch. I especially like the contrast between the dial and the bezel. The hands being blue that I thought was also a wonderful touch. On my wrist, 42 mm is perfect. I love the bracelet, again adding some dressiness to the piece.

One of the best analysis of this watch comparing and contrasting the design in relation with its early history. Just getting ready to get the blue one on steel. It also deserves to be said that the Seamaster line goes back a long way prior to the original Bond watch of the 1990s. Some of the early Seamasters were actually dress watches - which is part of why the original Bond watch, in carving out a new niche as the “dressy diver,” made so much sense. And then there’s the history that stretches back to the military watches that Omega made during WWII. There’s at least as much backstory to the Seamaster as there is to the Speedmaster moon watch.

@gpearce115 жыл бұрын
Watch Aficionado I agree. Many dismiss the SM300M compared to the Sub simply because they think 42mm is just too big, compared to 40mm (especially on their inevitably small wrists). There’s only two issues with that. Firstly, a larger dive watch makes sense, as it’s a tool watch, and legibility is key, extra size (so long as it’s not too big lug-to-lug) is a thing. More importantly, people that automatically dismiss the SM compared to the Sub based on size ignore that the lug-to-lug dimension is actually SMALLER than the Sub, especially when including the bracelet endlinks, and is better for smaller wrists as a result.
@midas19295 жыл бұрын
Well it is true that some just do not have the wrist for it. They should offer two sizes maybe. I personally have also no issue with 42mm for men, it is the same as the Speedy. There is also a large uni-sex market, as seen on the 36mm success from Rolex. The small lady sizes are total out of fashion for most. If a watch has 36 to 38mm, I can be sure my wife occasionally wears it, too. But as a functional "tool" and sports watch for men, I personally like the 42mm.

I would say the SMP’s biggest failing is its dated modernity. The SMP was built for the 90s, and it shows. What makes the Rolex Submariner so timeless is its conservative design. The less trendy and avant garde features a watch has, the more it can transcend the decades (of course the Royal Oak is the big counter argument to this idea). Omega took far more liberties with the SMP, and ironically gave us less timeless details to embrace. I still love the SMP, though, partly because of my nostalgia for the 90s.

I can see the attraction of that white dialled version for a different look. It’s got a similar colour scheme to the ceramic Daytona with its black ceramic bezel, brilliant white face and red script. It has a slightly antiseptic look however as does the Daytona. When everything is finished to a highly polished shine there’s a touch of the robotic going on. The size is OK with me as 42mm is in my wheelhouse. The helium escape value should be less prominent or get that wart taken off altogether. And the panda dial should have had contrasting hour markers in black ceramic like the bezel. It’s always going to be the ‘poor mans Sub’ in some eyes. Not mine. I have both. Nothing wrong with this iteration. And it’s plenty bang for the buck.

Great video, thanks. Nail on the head when you said the older generation have not aged well, they look naff rather than classic. I suspect the same will happen to this watch, it will look dated within a few years. I also question this link up with James Bond. I'm a James Bond fan but can't understand the tie up with a fictional character, I find it makes me cringe whenever I see a shot of JB flashing the watch. The JB link, for me, is one of the reasons why I would probably NOT buy the watch. I also can't stand the SS bracelet. I can't explain why but it just doesn't look like it belongs in 2021 but has no classic/vintage aesthetic nod either. Seems to be in a design no mans land.

What I hate about seamaster is the association with James Bond, like Daytona with Paul Newman. I just want to see the design effort not ruin by marketing effort

I do not see the problem with Omega in the association with Bond. I also bet Rolex would like to take that back. Omega launches in my opinion too many special limited editions, e.g. the Speedy, which are not so limited at all.

Andreas T I shouldn’t use the word “hate”. Yes, there are just too many models in the Seamaster category, and fortunately they didn’t make a quartz movement which some watchmakers made and that’s terrible.

I love the HEV, as the video states, makes the watch look like it has hidden features other than telling the time. Appropriate for a Bond watch.

thank you for the great quality content. Your "angle" on watches (ie design analysis, rather than playing the hype card while taking money from the brands) is refreshing and stimulating. I would love to see an episode on the ZRC Grands Fonds 1964 design. I think it deserves it... Cheers

I own this watch. Have watched every review I can find on this piece. This is by far the best review I have seen- agree with all your points. If it was 40mm and 2mm thinner, it would be the perfect watch. Especially for someone with small wrists like me. I find switching to the rubber strap reduces its heft.

hey idguy, what would you recommend me ... i have a speedmaster racing with rubber strap, but I'm lookign this 300m but i don't want another rubber black strap, but the steel bracelet i don't like to much, I love the look of the watch in white dial, what should i do ?

ID Guy, great video as always. I would be genuinely intrigued to see you do a video about the Apple Watch. I own one - I only ever wear it when working out - but there are many things about the design that really bug me and I’d be intrigued to see what your thoughts are too.

The Seamaster has that gimmick feel to it. If it was thinner, had a tapered bracelet and better knurling on the bezel I'd buy one.

Those are *just* skeleton hands. An example of a first gen SMP300 with sword hands is the 2055.80. I just picked up the new white dial last week. Pictures don't do it justice. It makes a nice counter to my 2055.80.

I liked everything about this watch, except the non-functional skeleton hands at night. A dive Watch with a HELIUM ESCAPE valve but unreadable in the dark?? Quite an irony there. I tried and failed to tolerate those hands. Couldn’t do it. I flipped mine.

Disregard this comment he's a notorious Rolex Fan Boy, He had no business buying the watch, he had made up his mind before he bought it that he was going to dislike it. It's a Rolex. In my opinion Lume is the most overrated feature of a watch.

Modern Dive watch is a dive computer, it’s a myth that serious divers use expensive watches to time their dives.
