It was at the start of September that Cathay Pacific canceled 24 roundtrip flights following an in-flight failure of an engine component.
The grounding of part of the Cathay fleet and urgent inspections undertaken by numerous airlines caused shares of the British engine-maker to fall by as much as 6%! This was due to the fact that the A350 is exclusively powered by Rolls-Royce engines.

Update: EASA now advises that operators of both A350-900 and -1000 check their engines. It stated: “In-service and in-shop inspections since then have identified that a specific cleaning process available during engine refurbishment may lead to fuel manifold main fuel hose degradation". One person familiar with the probe told Reuters that the wrong type of cleaning product may have been used in at least one repair plant.

Well done to Cathay for the swift and decisive action taken in the interest of safety here. This is exemplary behaviour. Acted correctly and quickly to assess and diagnose and correct the problem and advising all the relevant authorities to enable assessment and oversight. This is exactly how things should be handled ! Bravo 👏

It's a fuel hose NOT a catastrophic turbine blade issue. This is a relatively simple fix and as such, the engines are safe and working well. The real issue is where was and how was the braided pipe being chafed. Regards from South Africa

@@lartorgames `Oh boy` more nonsense from an armchair jet engine expert. QF32 was a broken oil-feed pipe from 14 years ago an isolated incident that has not been repeated. This latest incident is a fuel pipe ( not made by RR ) that is supplied to most engine manufacturers. You do understand how reliable most jet engines are? The millions of hours they operate without fault. If only you did some research into just what marvals of engineering they are. Sounds like you`d just rather peddle RR bashing BS.....Carry on.

Sadly it wouldn’t have even mattered if Boeing took any action about it, as exemplified with the PW4000 issues. Meanwhile, Airbus watched without taking any action, all of the action done to fix this was from Cathay Pacific and other airlines that reported, and EASA.

Let's be honest, the fuel hose being frayed on a 5 years aircraft with heavy use is not odd. I will say it sounds like the Maintainers should have swapped the hoses out much earlier if they inspected it properly.

I suspect Emirates have reserved slots already for the -1000, to be confirmed when the XWB-97 is uprated, which is what Clark wanted. If not then he's a fool, because the A350 is virtually sold out, and he needs this aircraft as a backup for the jinxed B777X, which seems to have another serious problem every month now. At the moment, the engines might drop on Sir Tim's head from the wing of a Boeing 777X flying over his office. Further, the B777X has no service history, and until it does, no one actually knows how it will perform in the extreme climate of the UAE, and whether GE's specifications for fuel economy are confirmed. The GE9X is an unknown quantity right now, and if there are any serious teething problems with that or the airframe, then Emirates A380s will be antique by the time they're retired..............
