His wife and children were living in Egypt under the protection of the-then Egyptian President, Gamal Abdel Nasser. Nkrumah considered that there were real threats to his life and that of his family so he barred them from visiting him in Guinea

They were under protection by the government and people of Egypt who loved Nkrumah as the Great Librator... protect them from evil leaders of Britain and America who wanted him assassinated.
