A sad story all round John wasn't a bad man but a victim of circumstance He lost his head that day and it ended in tragedy. Very sad for the three people who lost their lives. You are a great story teller

your videos are becoming essential viewing for me and i listen to them over lunch -im not from your neck of the woods or even been there but i find them to be snap shots in history and a fascinating social history showing how things have changed so much through the details of everyday life that you have documented here

Thank you so much, I am so glad you find the stories interesting. I have to admit to being fascinated with each story myself, during the research stages. I have lived in the North east all my life and there are still many things I have to learn about the area in past times.

I was born in Bedlington in 1953 and I left in 1961 and now live in New Zealand, my dad was a coal miner in Bedlington and his father was a miner before him. I visited in 2016 and stayed in Ashington, but visited Bedlington. Thanks for this, I had no idea this happened. .

#julie could you convert, generally, the sum of £'s in todays value. It would add to your stories. TIA. ❤ Great story btw. The last summer of European bliss before the Great War. Interesting twist in the story, quite possible that Mrs Amos stole the money.
@julieswallsendhistory8671
@julieswallsendhistory8671 Жыл бұрын
Thank you, yes I think it is quite possible that she had something to do with it. I have added today's money in some of the stories, I think mostly in the Wallsend history ones though. I'm often amazed with how much the money was worth today.

It just shows, that even with a death sentence over your head if you commit these crimes, they still done it anyway. I don't think it would make any difference if they did bring back the death sentence, they would still do it.
@julieswallsendhistory8671
@julieswallsendhistory8671 Жыл бұрын
I have to agree, I certainly don't think it stopped people committing crimes as it was intended. I am only covering the North East area and there's hundreds who were hanged for their crimes, even more so when including England as a whole. I must add though, earlier crimes such as stealing horses, also led to a death sentence in the 1700's and early 1800's, that seems extreme to me, and also didn't work as intended.

@@meredithisme3752 Unfortunately they hanged innocent people as well. And it is not just the UK that releases people early, the US does it as well and many other countries. The death penalty has never solved anything.

Bit strange he called her names for eating in a strange way out the corner of her mouth Then the doctor saying she maybe having a stroke That could also account for her seeming drunk Not that it means he didnt beat her too I couldnt sentance a man to death because there is definitely a doubt

Strange how this has come up on the wrong video, youtube has been a bit odd recently, but I know the story you refer to and I agree I think she had a stroke, and yes, this could be why he thought she was drunk. I too would feel a little cautious about finding him guilty unless I had clear proof that he had also attacked her.

An utterly pointless posting. He killed two coppers .. end of. The fact he may not have stole the money .. The fact that his wife may have had an affair... The fact he was a popular man in the town are all irrelevant to the point of no interest. Please try harder if you are to survive in a busy field of genre.
