Please join me in this video, Charles Hawtrey - A Flamboyantly Wasted Life.
Many fans of the Carry-On films consider Charles Hawtrey to be one of the outstanding members of the cast, this curious little man in goggle glasses with a thin quirky look - often receiving third billing, with only Sid James and Kenneth Williams in front of him - but was it enough for Charles?
In this video we will explore Charles Hawtrey’s beginnings as a child star of the silent era, a performer in Revue, and a regular in the popular Will Hay films but what really happened to this extraordinary actor - how did he go from working closely with Vivien Leigh the wife of Sir Laurence Olivier - to becoming a belligerent recluse in Deal on the Kent coast, where his jolly high camp flamboyant personality gave way to resentment and alcoholism.
I take flowers to Mortlake Crematorium the final resting place of Charles Hawtrey who was scattered on the rose bed - and we will take a walk through his life to discover more about the man with an unusual style of comedy brilliance built on a foundation of talent, ego, eccentricity, and notoriety.

Exactly the same could be said of Kenneth Williams for similar reasons. Neither had anything in life except their mothers and their sexuality, this in an age when self-hatred was expected of homosexuals, who were then treated as criminals. It is interesting that Barbara Windsor was a good friend of both, and both despised the Carry On films which were the source of their fame.

Great video! Fair and balanced. Charles Hawtrey was obviously an introvert and extremely shy. Such people are misunderstood by almost everyone as they mistake this for aloofness, which it most definitely isn't. That combined with homosexuality and alcoholism, it is amazing that he achieved what he did.

His life parallels that of Kenneth Williams. Both died alone and in mental torment. He was a product of the times. The experience of gay men back then was the same as that of Oscar Wilde, half a century earlier. Hiding behind a facade, terrified of exposure, no wonder so many gay men were actors, they had done it all their lives. Police officers used to visit public toilets in plain clothes to entrap gay men. Imagine that happening today.... Alan Carr, Tom Allen, and many others proudly proclaim their sexuality, back in the 50's and 60's that would be professional suicide and risk a prison sentence. No wonder their mental health was so precarious

I wonder if a lot of his anger and irascibility through this career had to do with being forced to suppress his homosexuality, or maybe hiding social anxiety. He sounds unpleasant about billing, but billing place is not a small thing in acting. It actually can dictate many things like ones pay for their next film. Also top billing could be a nice ego boost for someone who worked so hard and for so long in more than one successful series’ and film. He must have felt, by the last film, he was due. True or not. Even though he must have had regrets I hope those years in that 300 year old house (I love that) were enjoyable. I’m not really defending him, he sounds jerky for sure. Lol

I have been meaning to find a Charles Hawtrey doc for YEARS but have always got bogged down with the crap of the modern era of nonsense. Yet, somehow, this thumbnail popped up to remind me?! INCREDIBLE! I always found his concentration levels jarring and yet at the same time part of his likeability. By that I mean he CONSTANTLY looked at the camera as if reading his lines below or looking for affirmation that he was funny. He was funny NO DOUBT! WOW! Even back then some "fans" were totally disrespectful to someone of fame. Seeing someone famous doesn't give you the right ask for anything. Just tell them "Hey, I love your work and thank you" then EFF oof! 13:43 GOD BLESS YOU for showing that R.Whites Lemonade advert from the 80's OMG! MY CHILDHOOD :D I used to perform for my mum to that lol. You adding flowers at the end while picking off dead stems was VERY touching. Your DEEP DIVE into his life was nothing short of STELLAR! In the mid 60s Charles was often seen in Wimbledon riding a ladies bike with a basket on the handlebars. Wearing kaki shorts, long hooped socks and a flamboyant shirt. We all assumed that he was living in Wimbledon, as a lot of actors did at that time.

I’m afraid to say he reminds me of myself during a stage I went through where I knew I could unintentionally offend any more sensitive folk I talked with, but got so tired of staying in, being picked on, or apologising, that I decided to be boisterously irreverently honest to all, and friendly only with the ones who laughed (usually the more naive/young). It wasn’t till late in life that I was finally diagnosed with autism, and understood where I lacked the ability to empathise with certain others and how that might cause offence. I wonder if Charles was just undiagnosed?

Excellent video😊Charles was incredibly talented at being hilarious. Your video hi-lights the discrimination and injustice against gay men in his era and this must have had a huge affect on his wellbeing. Charles was not mentioned in glowing terms though, as noted here. It's a damned shame that none of the cast received residuals, as the films became popular worldwide, year after year, and the producers must have earned £Millions. 1988, I was 8 years old, I never knew he died that long ago, I enjoyed the carry on movies as a Child growing up in Ireland. Fascinating and wonderful tribute to Charles Hawtrey. Can't believe no family or friends attended his funeral. Too many Men are too attached to their Mothers, look at Elvis Presley , he went off the rails after his Mother died of Alcoholism not helped by the fact he was in Germany and she couldn't bear it. Some Mothers really need to cut the Apron strings and encourage their Son's to mix with other kids and make friends. Living with your Mother as an Adult is never good and I don't mean that in a bad way because you'll always be treated like a Child.

My first ever paid job was with Charles Hawtrey. It was a week in the touring panto of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Davenport Theatre Stockport, 1977. I was 11 years old playing a dwarf. My memory is that he didn't interact with the kids as much as I'd have liked, which is to say he didn't interact at all. The only words I ever exchanged with him were the lines on stage in rehearsal and performances. He wasn't exactly mean or nasty. He wasn't exactly anything. One got the feeling that the rest of us on stage were really no more than his props. Personally, this being my first ever job, I left with the sense that this was how professionals worked and it was perhaps a bit selfish of me to expect any more. I went on to have a long career in entertainment television and discovered that actually this was not how most professionals behaved. However, I remained very fond of Charlie, despite him not knowing me from Adam... or caring... and I was very disappointed when on the Saturday matinee he turned up legless and was unable to go on. I had to perform my part with his understudy, who was very nice, and very funny in the role, but he wasn't Charles Hawtrey. They got him sober enough for the evening performance which he muddled through with scant attention to the script, and immediately after the curtain he bolted for the nearest boozer and I was unable to give him a thank you card and ask for an autograph. I wasn't too downhearted though. I felt it had been a real privilege to have worked with a rare talent whatever his off-stage demeanour might have been.

Thank you so much for sharing this extremely interesting insight into Charlie as an actor and person - it would confirm how I'd imagined him to be in all honesty - this would have been a few years after his mother's death and by that time I think the drink had really started to affect him. It's good to hear that it didn't put you off of a career in enterainment - and thank you so much for your kindness - there have been more than a few unkind comments about him - it's lovely to hear that you remained fond of him and felt that working with him was a privilege xx

He did! I know he was a problem for many people - but as an entertainer he certainly fulfilled his remit! He gave endless laughs to so many of us ❤❤❤

Thanks for bringing this to us, but what a sad life. I feel quite sorry for him.

My pleasure - thank you so much for watching! It is a very sad story - because his future was in his own hand - and he made some decisions that didn’t help him - it must of been so difficult for him too - caring for his mother with dementia while trying to continue with his career ❤

Why 'wasted life'? He was in 104 movies or TV shows plus radio. And he's still fondly remembered today! We should all be so lucky! He was a drinker but everyone was in those days. I don't mind a little aperitif myself once in a while...

'wasted' as in drunk - I have read so often that he was described as 'wasted' that's why I chose that title - partly a play on words but also - while he certainly did make many films and had many credits to his name - he absolutely wasted many opportunities due to his choices regarding alcohol and ego - so the title seemed rather fitting to me! I can't deny I enjoy the odd bottle of champagne or three! Thank you for your comment and for watching - it's greatly appreciated! ❤❤❤

Charles Hawtrey , a star who instantly provided movie magic to every scene , his chemistry was infectious and our laughter was his reward . His cameo appearance in the movie 'What a Whopper' (1961) is an absolute gem .

Thanks for that Shar, Charlie must of been a very unhappy person which is a shame, he couldn't quite find what exactly he wanted in life. Beautiful flowers as usual thanks again for this very in-depth story.😘

I think that too! When people are awful to others it’s often because they are unhappy and/ or dissatisfied with their lives - it’s so sad x Thank you for your lovely comment and for watching! It’s always very appreciated ❤
