I can tell by the title that the next dungeon Delve is likely to be the Continuation of this module, but I'm very curious where it'll go after that-my hope would be Princes of the Apocalypse, because that's the module that I started DMing with and that got my gaming group together, but I somewhat suspect that it'd be too long to do in this format...

I'm actually running this this weekend for my kids. In 5e. I've run it in 3e, and tried to run it in 3 5 for my kids and that was a disaster, partially cuz trying to run a big combat theater of the mind with the players being completely ignorant of the rules, and partly because one player was playing a Kobold, so she rage quit when a fight broke out with the kobolds.

I don't like XP. Look at how the players are influenced in immersion-damaging ways by the fact that NPC's share party XP. Would they even consider sending that NPC back to their home if it wasn't for the XP issue? No, they wouldn't, because why would you turn down a bit of free help? As for potentially sending them back because of the treasure rewards, I can see a potential actual adventuring party doing that. (If the RPG system is more tightly woven into the narrative, then this issue kinda goes away as it becomes a true in-universe issue and no longer messes with immersion.)
@letirthespirit28012 ай бұрын
I can somewhat agree with ya on that. I think the XP system of Baldur's Gate 3 works better as it is still XP based gameplay, but everyone gets the same amount for quests while small gifts of individual XP are given based off of character related things (ex: inspiration based on backgrounds).
@theuncalledfor2 ай бұрын
@@letirthespirit2801 BG3 is also a single player video game (with a coop multiplayer mode), so the way you immerse yourself in it tends to be different than a TTRPG. XP makes way more sense than milestone in a video game.
@crazydragy423316 күн бұрын
I'd argue the way it's split also doesn't even make sense. Why is it split evenly based on the amount of combatants on YOUR side. In a more cynical look you get more xp if your party dies... Not to mention it's unfair for a character that used up all their spell slots to get that same amount of xp as someone who did one mele attack.

Lol characters made mistakes and died. Nothing new, has nothing to do with being level one. Party was doing just fine prior to this. Should've leave the wyrmling alone until they were at least level two, or maybe formulate a plan to mitigate it.
@ArmoredChocoboLPs2 ай бұрын
What mistake? They were doing the module verbatim. It was part of the campaign. There was no diplomacy option, it says the dragon attacks on sight. Nothing a Level 1 could have done to prevent an 8d6 cold dragon breath from killing them except sheer luck. It’s complete bullshit as a Level 1 module and even if the intent was for them to grind rats and goblins first that’s STILL bullshit
@fratystuff67372 ай бұрын
@@ArmoredChocoboLPs 5d8*. The mistake to try to brute force it? I'm not surprised at all that persuading a chromatic dragon wouldn't work tbh. If diplomacy doesnt work in a scenario like this, run. Simple as that. Then maybe comeback later, with a solid strategy, and at level 2 or 3. Maybe play the ally to some goblin to try to distract it while the party lands the drop on the thing. It aint rocket science.
@theuncalledfor2 ай бұрын
Other than metagaming, or making characters that are extremely paranoid (in which case they shouldn't even be trying to explore this place in the first place until they're at least level 5), what could they have actually done to approach this better? I wanna hear your suggestions. And no, your previous suggestion of "run" doesn't work, because when exactly did they have time to run? The dragon used her breath the moment she had her first turn! Which means unavoidable dead characters! And dragons, including the white ones, are fast. This thing has a 60ft fly speed. What if she pursues? Which the characters would have reason to believe she would, seeing as she said she wanted their treasure? (I mean, it seems she didn't, but the characters couldn't have known that.) Plus, how exactly were the kobolds keeping her contained when she can just blast a 5d8 half-on-save cold damage cone? This is immersion-breaking on top of being blatantly unfair.
@fratystuff67372 ай бұрын
@@theuncalledfor I never said the dungeon doesn't have issues. I just said playing it at level 1 is not the problem here. They could've been more cautious idk. Send the rogue to sneak into it to gather info, maybe? Jacob just called for a gotcha initiative is rolled moment here, but he could've just manage it differently, "you see the wings of the dragon behind the table", "after diplomacy attempt, the dragon doesnt budge, and if you don't get out of here now, initiative is rolled". They were able to talk to her before her turn. They all had turns before her too so they could very well run. Take into consideration too that even level 1 characters can deal almost the same amount of damage as a level 4 character does. Guiding bolt is 4d6 with extra effect, chromatic orb is 3d8, catapult is 3d8, Dissonant whip is 3d6 with extra effect... Yes, at level one, in a void, without any sort of context, this encounter is very deadly. But that's not how dnd is. I had a level 3 party of 3 pcs acompanied by a weak npc (1/4 cr) and they were able to defeat a young green dragon with pure tactics and a solid plan. Two of them almost died, sure. But they succeeded.

@crazydragy423316 күн бұрын
Yeah, joke characters can be fun or hella annoying and I think if you want to play one like that maybe talk with your party? If your character is gonna be combative with the party or unhelpful, or weak for the fun of it let others know they have half a teammate instead of one.
@crazydragy423316 күн бұрын
There's a character like that in a campaign I'm playing and I literally nicknamed them "Rabies" because they're just a menace. We can't split up in game, so they keep derailing the party because the character doesn't agree with everyone else. It's not fun in the end 😮💨 The stakes are bigger but imagine if everyone wanted ice cream they'd yell that the shop can't be trusted and then set it on fire. By the nature of the game we have a terrorist on our team that controls the narrative 😅
