The reason that a team considered this derivative was because it would use only shuttle hardware(apart from the payload carrier) and so could be assembled quickly. One of the problems would be that abort could be hard because of the whole shuttle configuration. However, your design was even more dangerous. It had the crew capsule inside the cargo Bay, whereas I think most crewed designs had a launch escape tower at the top of the payload carrier in order to lift the crew in case of an abort.

Fun facts! (That you probably already know :) ) The Shuttle-C was to use one of two different designed engine pods. The initial design pod was a ballistic reentry body that used parachutes to land but due to no lift on entry the landing sites were found to be the middle of Australia or Northern Mexico depending on the orbital inclination. This would require some 'creative' logistics so another design was looked at that added aerodynamics to the pod allowing it to be recovered in a similar manner as the Orbiter itself. This lowered the total payload to orbit somewhat, (IIRC about 5 to 10 metric tons) but greatly simplified and lowered logistics requirements. Now even more interesting, (to me at least :) ) was the fact that what we know as "Shuttle-C", (and while we're on that subject Matt are you going to do the REAL monster "Shuttle-Z"?) was among a series of proposed modifications to the "Space Transportation System" (it really was meant to be a 'system' rather than just the Shuttle using the various parts as the basis of a series of space access vehicles) that were originally proposed by the Shuttle contractor Rockwell before they had completed construction of the first Orbiter "Enterprise"!

I thought the SDLV or "Shuttle-C" had a lot of promise - especially considering how many delays and how much over-budget SLS has run. Two ideas for your version: 1. How about mounting an inflatable heat shield on the boattail? 2. The "Orion" spacecraft probably should be mounted on top of the payload module, with a Launch Abort System included, rather than inside a payload bay (I think that was NASA was considering had the side-mounted SDLV been adopted). Thanks for doing this!

yeah, docking isn't my issue, it's just trying to make the rocket use as few stages as possible. I'm currently working on an interplanetary transport system (I.T.S). It involves a crew transfer vehicle (brings crew and/or cargo up to a kerbin space station) using an SSTO. Once docked there, there will be different reusable crafts (may have multiple reused stages like a lander and transfer) but will always come back as they went. They will then refuel at the space station and it's ready for the next mission. So basically, this eliminates tons of excess fuel being used, and it also eliminates the horrible thought of spent stages hurting the space polar bears or dolphins.
