The one thing everybody leaves out about the move Messi hung on Joško Gvardiol is that much earlier in the match a ball went out of play. Gvardiol absolutely hammered Messi shoulder to shoulder, Messi just got up looked to see who did it then nodded at him. Zero complaints to the ref, zero faking injury, just pure taking a number for later. He wanted to completely embarrass Joško Gvardiol, and he made him completely useless so mission accomplished.

I want to add something, in that run against gvardiol in semi's match Messi also makes a pause on the run because he knows that gvardiol is younger, Messi knows 1x1 on speed isn't gonna work, so he breaks the pace and the defender stopped for a fraction of a second just to see Messi sprint towards the area......just a pleasure to see.

This is so well put together. I can’t wait for 50 years down the line when I get to tell my grandkids about that match and it’s significance. The thing that makes Messi even more likable is the fact that it took him a long time to win a World Cup. People may not have liked him as much if the World Cup had fallen to him easily as every other tournament had. He needed a heroes journey and this match was the climax of not only his career but also the state of football for the last 20 years. Greatest match ever.

great video, James. Just a little comment about "bobo": it's not just used by kids, adults actually use it and it has similarities to "boludo", which can be used in a friendly way or as an insult. When used as an insult, like Messi does, "bobo" carries a kind of passive aggresive weight that mixes the meanings of "asshole" and "imbecile" in a very distinctive way. I think this special "flavor" of the word is the reason it became an instant meme and t-shirts with the phrase are still sold by the thousands here. Also, Messi speakes in a very genuine and pure center-Argentine accent: "andá pallá" instead of "vete para allí" which would be the original Spanish form. Cheers!

Crazy how had Argentina not lost to Saudi Arabia, they would have put up a 51 match undefeated streak since their next loss came in November 2023 against Uruguay in CONMEBOL qualifiers. This would have put them 14 ahead of Italy who hold the record with 37. A record that would take a long long time to be broken, if possible.
@Technical_ability_superiority6 ай бұрын
Maybe that loss was needed. But I think they could have won it anyway if they started Mac Allister ahead of Lautaro and Licha ahead of Otamendi. The problem in that game was that Saudi was pressing high, and they needed another ball-playing Center back and and deep-lying ball progressor to help out Romero & Paredes who were man-marked.

I honestly don't get the sentiment that anyone deserves the trophy. Cruyff did more for football than the vast majority of players in history. Did he "deserve" the 1974 World Cup? I don't think so. Nor did Puskas deserve the 1954 Cup, even though Hungary were easily the best team in the world. And if you win the trophy after 2 PK wins, I just don't see where anyone deserved anything. Chile won 2 Copa America trophies by grinding out PK wins; hard for me to say they were the glorious undisputed champions of South America. It's a bit like, in an election involving many millions of voters, one candidate wins by 5 votes and then claims they have a "mandate" from the people. Messi had moments of absolute magic, but van Gaal was on to something, which is why his assistant was so mad when van Gaal said the quiet part out loud. Argentina's defense struggled late against the Saudis, Holland and France. The fact that it happened 3 times means it's not some wild coincidence. Even against Australia, Argentina were struggling late. When that happens, the most likely culprit is a tired midfield. Argentina's midfield was getting worn out covering for Messi. So mad respect to them and of course Martinez. Without their play, Messi would have no Cup. And that's one of the problems I had with the 2022 Cup - that even acknowledging Argentina's at times dominant play, the feeling was that Messi was going to get the trophy no matter what. I like and respect Messi very much, and I hated Maradona, but Maradona's victory feels more deserved than Messi's. In the meantime, I have to live with the dubious satisfaction that Holland managed to punk Argentina with the punkiest free-kick punking in the history of punkdom.

What's amazing about the Croatia game is that Argentina beat the 2nd place finishers of the previous tournament in the semi finals (the second last game of the tournament) and who also happened to have had a secondary hand in their previous humiliating exit by forcong them to play the eventual champions France. They also did it with the exact same humiliating scoreline that croatia humiliated them with (3-0) in the last tournament. With France once again meeting Argentina as now the final obstacle to winning it all this time around, it felt like Argentina fighting a big boss and it's no. 2 from Argentina's POV. In the first round they hot destroyed, but in the second, Argentina got it's revenge in possibly the most poetic and satisfying manner possible.

you should make a video about Rodrigo de paul, he is knows as the "engine" of the Argentinean selection and he with leo parades was able to create a perfect team for Messi and win everithing

Fantastic video James, you put our collective emotions into words perfectly. Guillem was great with his philosophical insight. Messi indeed was a gift from the heavens to football fans across the world. Fairytales in sport are not meant to be but just this once fate made an exception.

Awesome video James mate. One of the best footy vids I've seen. One interesting thing I find Is how the English/European media view messi as shy and introverted. Being someone who comes from Chilean parents. Messi is seen as quite a emotional player in South America. He has lost it a few times and openly spoke about quitting international football as he couldn't win for his country and actually quit for a period due to losing 2 copa americas on pens. Great great player just interesting to see how he is viewed across continents

Two words: Maradonna, Cristiano. The two players that Messi has been compared with his whole life. Both of whom exude an arrogance only acceptable in society for those who have proven beyond doubt that they are special. If these three people were in the same room, I would guess that you wouldn't really notice Messi (unless there was a football in there). I think that's why he is portrayed as such, and for me, it only heightens his greatness.

The section on the duality between Messi's Catalan side and Argentinian side genuinely made me giddy as to how brilliant it was. Both amazing research and analysis Jim 🔥
@che.parisi Жыл бұрын
That's funny, because I thought that was the most dramatized part of the video. There is no duality, Messi was just pissed, that's it. And he was on camera, which is why he said bobo. Under his hand he'd usually say much worse throughout his whole career and anyone that watches football and speaks Spanish knows that.

There is no player in the world that actually makes me cry when watching Messi highlight reels with commentary, it's because he is that good, he does the unthinkable that I am that proud of him that I shed tears of joy for the mystical wonder that is Lionel Messi who plays football that is so sublime that you can't help but cry when you watch backs all his alien like feats with the ball

The storytelling and production in this video is top class, and I'm sure it'll do numbers. But I'll have to admit, I've always liked it more when you've looked for the stories that others haven't seen yet, or dumented yet.

You missed the part before the final Embape penalty. The hand ball from the corner. Please also show the error that was made by the Referee and var to miss that moment that changed the story and made the final above all, so emotional and epic. Very well done, I applaude you on this very excellently narrated and put together video.
