I'm 42yrs old & this challenge definitely brings up nostalgic feelings for sure. What an insane run. You slayed Mario 64. It's crazy that games as a kid that took us days and days to complete we now have speedrunners finishing the same games in mind-boggling times. Seeing Lak beat The Legend of Zelda so fast was epic as Zelda was always one of my favorite games which I've beaten countless times. I still remember my neighbor calling me Xmas day when he was so excited that he found level 1 in Zelda when we were 6yrs old and he told me to go over which was across the street. For this friend, I reserved 2 copies of Super Mario 3 from Child World since it was tough to find. Memories. Congrats again on such a great run.

33:28 zero hands! for those of you not familiar with this, three hands might grab you, wasting time, each has a 50% chance. so you only have a 1/8 chance of getting zero hands... lots of speedrun attempts die to this luck

It's a real bummer the mods didn't accept the run, but "no dropped frames" is a fairly standard rule for rejection. The run would have been top 10. Also, that 9:44 1-star run was nuts for a mariohour run! That's a top 300 time after playing 5 other mario games really well! I checked the other top 10 mariohour runs to see how that 1-star run compares. It's a top 5 1-star time! 1st place - PixelPerfectRuns - 9:36 2nd place - TwitchName - 9:02 3rd place - EthanRTA - 10:42 4th place - darbian - 10:52 5th place - kosmic - 9:39 6th place - Slade - 10:33 7th place - SuperMegaDev - 10:24 8th place - lackattack - 10:48 9th place - ThePKing - 12:13 10th place - Xein64 - 8:26

Notice the green Piranha Plants in World 4 in his Lost Levels playthrough? That alone disqualifies him. He’s using a bootleg version that actually takes away some of the challenge! In the legit version of the game, all Piranha Plants are red starting in World 4!
@TheGuyWhoIsSitting Жыл бұрын
Every pipe you can enter from the top without glitches in Mario 1 is programmed to have Piranha plants in them. The hard coded exception is 1-1, and if any don’t load it’s because there wasn’t enough room in the memory to do so.

Me too. But I'd understand if the glitchy NES got the run rejected. I'm 100% sure that the run is legit, and I'm sure the mods know that too. But accepting runs like that could open up opportunities for non-legit runs. So it might be rejected just to avoid a double standard. Either way, we all know Ryu did it. So congrats are in order!

@Itsneight weird...even without taking shortcuts between levels like Ryu did in this video, SM2 is not that hard to complete. Unless maybe with "SM2", you actually mean "the Lost levels"? In that case play the SNES version of the game, because while playing Luigi the game becomes a lot easier

I mean in all honesty, if submitting to actual "rankings" the signal cutting out should be an auto-disqualify. It sucks but get a better cable or better capture device, having gaps in playthrough like that is beyond easy to manipulate.....
@tsimon8374 Жыл бұрын
In the case of a competitive "world record" speedrun scenario, I would have to agree... but since this is not that type of scenario, I would personally say it's OK. Also I am sure you can still determine whether or not a splice occurred simply based on the time it was cut out compared to the actual game time. Also this was streamed LIVE so we know it can't have been spliced.
@clarinetJWD Жыл бұрын
I am of two minds about it. Yeah, the video cutting out should be disqualifying usually. However, the video of his hands never dropped. As long as the game video matches his inputs, I think it should be accepted.
@WaldoCarmen Жыл бұрын
I was not searching for this video. I also clicked immediately.
@TyrantsRuin Жыл бұрын
As I say to all speedrunners but it's personal preference, but glitches and exploits give you an automatic DQ in speed running, in my world.
@bmac2814 Жыл бұрын
I have always felt that way too. Kinda weird to me how the majority seems to prefer glitches and game breaking runs. Like what? You didn't beat the game 🤣 you just broke it and cheated lmao. To each their own I guess.
@TompaA Жыл бұрын
@@bmac2814 Glitches are part of the game and therefore allowed by default, since you may use what the game has to offer in order to beat it quickly. It's also not always easy to define what a glitch is or not. Quite often, glitches are left on purpose in games because they are "more like features" (quote from Shigeru Miyamoto). Some, like walljumping in Super Mario Bros. 3, was even included in the official strategy guide for the game, which technically would not count it as a glitch. There are maaaany grey zones for glitches and generally makes no sense to ban them initially for the "Any%" category, as they are after all part of the game, as mentioned. For SMB1, there is a "Glitchless" category, but no one really cares for it as it's basically an "Easy mode" run, that has nothing new or interesting to offer. Some glitches can however be quite major and changing the run quite a bit, which is why the different categories exist. Though no matter how much you glitch or not, you are still beating the game.
@Joeaol6 Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure there's two different categories, one for using exploits and one for not
@retropwn759610 ай бұрын
Maybe in your world... but in the actual speed running world they are allowed and in a category of their own.

When playing Super Mario Bros 1: avoid jumping on the flagpole when the time ends at 1, 3 or 6. That will bring you 1, 3 or 6 fireworks that slows down your speedrun. There's also an algoritm for fireworks in Super Mario Bros 2 (JP) but it's a little bit more complex but still pretty easy to understand. I've watched a video about it but I cannot remember that algoritm.

There are quite a few terrain objects and enemies (particularly Super Mario World) that are not in Super Mario Maker (bummer!) 2. There are some SMW glitches that I have not seen, such as the koopa in the item slot to complete the dungeon 3. Mario 3 may have been the first game I owned that you could actually SAVE and come back to.
