I enjoyed the movie a lot. Mario has never really been about deep storylines, and its simplicity is what has always made it great. The movie I think did a lot to show how a movie based on a game could be successful, and I’m excited not only for more Mario Bros movies but possibly other movies based on Nintendo franchises. Zelda and Star Fox both come to mind, a Donkey Kong only movie comes to mind too. This movie has to have shown Nintendo that they have a lot of untapped potential here.

The final shot of the plumbing scene with the dog got me to laugh out loud, and that was my 5 year old's favorite part of the movie. Also definitely had the thought that they were intentionally referencing the Rainbow Road skip there. Musically, I think this was the best composition of a Mario/Nintendo theme medley that has ever been done. There have been lots of concerts and anniversary compilations and fan made things, but this was exceptionally well done and well edited with the movie itself. The part when the dry bones came back to life was A+ animation. So cool. Made me wish that it was Luigi's Haunted Mansion Movie. When he clicked his light back on after it blinked off, that hyped me up. Then you don't see him much more after that. I loved the little blue sprite's pessimistic vibe. The kupa soldiers getting ready for war was pretty bad ass and surprisingly serious. The penguin army made it lighter which was fun to watch. Peach was okay. Same female character arc that they do now a days. Nothing really different there. (Now if they made her both tough and dainty, that would have been cool) I wish the last fight was in a castle honestly. I wish there were more character cameos. I agree with you about the pase. I found myself wanting more, but I'm also glad because it didn't leave room for us to be bored or disappointed. One of the best parts of the movie as well as the others was the cool Donkey Kong dudes making the cars with upper 80s lower 90 hair cuts. Was a vibe as well along with the music. Toad was too cool in his monster vehicle. Would give it a 4.5. -.5 for wanting more Luigi in the dark world and only puting the group of Yoshis on the screen for 2 seconds. (Also I thought the Italian accents on the commercial should have been their real accents 🙃).

Quick pacing can be okay, but if it goes the route of The Rise of Skywalker, where the film is just constantly barraging you with new scenes, locations, action, explosions, etc. it can be a real turnoff. Everything just becomes insubstantial noise. I do agree with some others that snappy pacing is pretty critical to a kids' movie, but hopefully it wasn't too distracting/rushed feeling.

I feel like for the super star, you can think of it this way: in SMB3, you could gather power ups that can be selected/used prior to starting each level. Similarly, Bowser can carry the super star without using it. He wanted to save it for Peach, so he decided not to use it yet. What’s odd is that a single super star powered up both Mario and Luigi, but anyway, that’s my take on it.

I also liked the little scene when Mario was sitting on his bed playing Kid Icarus on NES. That game was a huge part of my childhood. As for the star and Bowser's keeping it, maybe he was holding it as a deterrent, like its a WMD. Kind of a dumb move though if you think about it. Sure he could wreak havoc with it for a few minutes, but then he'd be right back to where he was before he'd stolen it. He probably hoped people would be too afraid to challenge him and force him to use it.

There were blue Koopa Troopas in SMW, however they weren't generals or anything... That being said, they are rarer than, obviously, green and red, so I guess they could be like 'elite' forces? And I think it's the fact that Bowser possessed the star that 'gave' him power. Not literally, figuratively. 'ooh he's got the power star!' and fear of what he'd become should he use it. Thus why he says to his minion(Kamek?) 'Peach will love me cause I've got the star', 'what if she doesn't?' 'Then I'll use it!'.

Good laughs, lots of fun and I loved Jack Black's performance. Also the luma was hilarious.

A few random thoughts: why did they even have the kong part? The “kong army” immediately surrendered the second bowser showed up the second time. Clearly they just needed a way to include DK but the way they did it felt completely pointless. Like you said, it seemed like peach could’ve taken bowser on her own. The training montage should’ve lasted way longer. Also peach came off as a dick. Why was she so mean to bowser? They didn’t set up a history between them so she just seemed incredibly cruel. Lastly, I really wish Mario and Luigi weren’t from the “real” world. I didn’t like the nyc parts at all (except the commercial lol) and the way they discovered the mushroom kingdom introduced more questions than it answered. Why was there a pipe in a 1970s-era tunnel? Did someone 50 years ago discover the mushroom kingdom? Why was that tunnel/facility abandoned? How did peach end up there as a baby? It was a very pretty movie and I enjoyed all the characters except peach but the plot left a LOT to be desired imo.
@PieMan061 Жыл бұрын
But the Kong army didn't give up...they had a fight on the rainbow road and only when they were trapped were they captured (I would not have called it surrendering). Also, why was Peach mean to Bowser? Did you not notice he's a tyrant who captures people, destroys their kingdom, and threatens to kill them? I thought it was pretty obvious they set Bowser as a typical tyrant, why wouldn't she be mean to him? They needed the Kong army because they didn't know that Bowser wanted to marry Peach, they all thought he was just going to destroy the kingdom like they did with the Penguins. The only reason she got close to beating him was Bowser let her get close during the marriage and even then it showed Bowser could beat both Peach and DK on his own when they went back to Brooklyn.

Not to mention Waluigis theme music in the Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix is just a remixed version of the music from the Wrecking Crew. Forman Spike is also in one of the Warioware games too.

I liked it. I do wish there was more but I think they made the right movie. With its success we’ll definitely get several more movies. I thought of smash with the Donkey Kong Mario fight. The voices I never found distracting, although for cranky Kong I was a little surprised with that character’s voice. I didn’t have any expectation for his voice but it felt out of place initially. After seeing the character for a bit, the voice made sense. I’ve taken my daughter to see it twice and she loves it. She was hoping to see Rosalina. Hopefully she’s in the sequel. Not that it bothers me but if Mario and Luigi didn’t set out to save Brooklyn from the flooding in the beginning and went through the warp pipe, then bowser’s castle island would never have warped to Brooklyn in the end and cause as much destruction as it did, way more than the flooding. It definitely mirrors their first job with Frances the dog where they try to fix a tiny leak and somehow cause more damage then if it was left alone. Maybe that’ll be a character trait of theirs.

He would've only used it as a last ditch effort since as you mentioned, once you use it, it's gone (and when he was frozen, he couldn't get it so he resorted to using the bomber bill instead). There really wasn't a time he needed it, since even in the final fight, he was winning against Peach and DK without it.

RYUUU the blue shell guy is a reference to the blue shell from mario kart. You know? The one that targets the first place holder

@Julian Carrion since in Mario Kart Ryu is a pro and he is almost always in the first position, he is the one who is often targeted by a blue shell....so he hates blue shells so much that probably he forgot about them lol

I told my wife the same thing about peach haha, great movie though. Would love to watch it again once it comes out to DVD. I really wish Daisy and a reference to Luigis Mansion was thrown in, but with plans of more movies they can't use everything on the first one.

Spike is Foreman Spike from the Wrecking Crew games. Man, sometimes I feel like we need to take Ryu's gamer card away.

I honestly thought it was funny when Mario goes to his room after his family's disapproval of the plumbing commercial, and he's playing and loses at "Kid Icarus." It may have seemed really cliche, but still funny nonetheless.

You forgot when they was on their trip to save Luigi. Mario Peach and Toad they was coming from grassland, desert world, than Yoshi’s Island. All the different color Yoshi’s was so cute. I can’t wait for part two. We need some Lakitu’s and some Thwomp’s. They should have put some on the rainbow road.

I started off explaining every reference to my wife, but 5 minutes in I was like "She'll figure it out from context".

I’m so glad you enjoyed it as much as you did! I really loved it too. And I’m super hoping the success of it leads to epic Metroid and Zelda movies

Yeah that's one thing I don't get now that you mention it - the super star's effect is KNOWN to be only temporary - so what exactly was Bowser's plan? He was ALREADY physically very tough, could breath fire, all of that, had an army, so what use is 30 seconds of invincibility and increased strength? I GUESS maybe in Bowser's hands since he's already so strong (in one game he pulls an entire ISLAND weighing untold millions of tons with brute strength, so yeah, superman level strong there if he can do that) 30 seconds of power boost COULD do some crazy things where he could basically lay waste to an entire region - that's about all that comes to mind though.

He was saving the star for the right moment, or perhaps never planned to use it at all. It's a symbol of power for him, and once used, that goes away. The threat of merely having it was what he wanted, to convince peach to marry him.
