the difference here is procedural memory vs working memory. when you improvise you are playing directly from the procedural memory, where if you were learning something brand new it would be performed by the working memory. i liked the analogy u used with speaking a different language, because it actually works the same way with music. i have played piano for many years, and can improvise freely no problem. i am fairly new to guitar, but about 4 months in i developed enough skill to connect the "musical language" i had from piano, and boom, i was improvising on scales just like i did on piano.

I need to learn the opposite: melodies, riffs and licks. I never found improvising hard to do. But learning long(ish) melodies etc. which later can be used to quote (partly) is much harder for me...

I kinda get it but kinda don"t. For example if I am playing a couple of leads/solos from a couple of scales over a three chord progression isn't that improvising?

I kept it simple at first...1 chord...then 2 chord...then 3 chords. I could get away with using only the A min penta over A min, D min, Emin ( 1, 4, ,5) simply becuase A min penta has all those modes in it. or the modes are A min penta, D nuetral penta, E min b6 penta. Then once in a while C MAJOR.... but I struggle with F Maj and G7.... so I did the next thing.....Play A min penta.....D min penta....E Min penta. That actaully made it EASIER and more efficient...lol The G7 chord still sounded HARSH to my ears...especailly if I was playing over power chords...( but being a metal head...I like the b2 ( phy or loc) i did learn the A Harmonic min...didnt really understood it...i just new it sounded cool.....Then one day...I found out...E7 into A min. It took me getting used to that..... Then I learn more scales....holy be jeeesus there's crap load of Dominant chords every where...How was I going to be EFFICENT at that??? Oh yeah...The pentatonic....That damn G7. Then I found out there such a thing as the DOMINANT Pentatonic... I went back to basic of learning the DOMINANT pentatonic over the G7 as the ROOT of that scale....within C MAJOR/A min at first ( STRUCTURED) I'm just more efffcient , that's all...i can play the dominant pentatonic at any pitch.. G7....B7.....D7....F#7...ect It's still the same old concept of playing A min over A min....D min penta over Dmin Then simply play E dominant penta over E7.. Then.....A7, D7, E7.....play A dominant over A7...D dominant over D7...ect That's all.

i think u thinking way too much while playing. You dont have to switch scales or pentatonics between each chord. i mean u can, and there a cool Sounds caused by that. but try to find the chord within the scale, the chord tones. then there is not much thinking needed except ur key in where each chord lays in that specific key. And additionally, u dont have to land on chord tones the whole time, u will get away by using just one scale and ur ear to hear what sounds good. some changes like the harmonic minor Change when e7 is played in a minor or a dominant 7 chord arpeggio are more important to highlight
