Once this game clicks, it's REALLY good. Also, some great level design, VERY similar to OG Dark Souls

Fuck no, it's not even close to Souls. In Souls, each area was very clean and relatively small, and when you explored it, you often knew where the shortcuts would lead you. In Surge each area is filled with visual clutter, you often dont know if another hidden nook is just a closet with an enemy or maybe a pickup of some kind or it's actually a path you need to proceed (best example is probably central processing B, where the path leading to boss in Decontamination is hidden so far away from the main ways you can explore, it can get you stuck for HOURS.) I like Surge a lot, but it's level design is... Ugh.

The Surge is maybe my favorite Soulslike. I love the repressive atmosphere, chunky and strategic combat, limb removal for finding gear, leveling systems, the (sometimes infuriating) level design and THAT SONG. I would argue that the corpse run isn't necessarily more punishing than a Souls game because you can always bank your scrap at any time, so it evens out. Great review and congrats on 10,000+ subs!

I love the surge too... except for black cerberus. That boss is too hard for my liking and I've finished all souls games with relative ease compared to this. In souls games you can just roll through everything with decent timing and you are invincible, but in the surge it's harder to survive, especially in boss fight.

Im playing the surge 2 just started today and killed first boss and im having a blast with the limbs mechanic Would you say i should stop and play the surge 1 first? And which one did you like better tsurge 1 or tsurge2? Ty in advance

@@kevinschm9798 The Surge 2 story is a continuation of The Surge story, so it makes sense in that regard to play them in order. While both games are of the same concept, they are both also very different, at least in relation to implants, which are very important. I prefer the first game, but most people seem to prefer the second one. I did however struggle to get into The Surge when I first bought it, I picked it up and put it down a couple of times mainly because the setting is dull, very happy that I ended up finishing it though. The DLC's really add to the experience too.

Recently finished playing this. I adore this game, had great fun exploring and always found the areas intresting. The whole energy thing didn't really agree with me though and I mostly ignored the drone. Agree with all of what you've said, that's a fair review. I would also recommend it and am going to do Surge 2 for Christmas.

I'm currently playing this there are some things i like about it and some not. One thing that i thought was really cool was that how to select your class, I've never seen that before in any game to my knowledge. That was really cool and immersive way to select your class.

Surge 1 and 2 are totally underrated. No Souls for sure, but still better than many others trying to be a Souls like. The story is good, the immersion is massive imho

After playing through this a bit (i got past the 1st boss), i ended up putting the game down due to the difficulty of it. I didnt know there was a genre for these types of games. I ended up playing and finishing Code Vein (anime souls-like), loved it and then i ended up playing Elden Ring when it came out and finishing that. Now have i have a newfound love and respect for the genre and i came back to this last weekend. Also because i have The Surge 2 and i want to play through both. It's a really interesting game once you understand how everything works. I really like the new age technology spin that this game puts on it as opposed to ER or DS and the build making part of it seems a lot more straightforward to me than ER.

The only thing I want from this game is Minimap, if they really don't want put the map, at least make it as Implant, where you need to equip in order to use it, just like Implant for enemies health bar.

Saludos desde Argentina. Este juego lo compre el año pasado (lo agarre en 75% de descuento, junto a su secuela, ambos con todo el contenido extra) pero muy revientemente le pude agarrar la mano al juego, y es realmente un juego sumamente olvidado que tiene mecanicas asombrosas!. Si bien, varias cosas que propone ya se vieron, realmente es satisfactorio de jugarse. El diseño de niveles es increible (me recordo mucho al de Pascals Wager), la ambientacion tambien me enamoro muchisimo (no es una fabrica, es una empresa con sus diferentes secciones, y cad auna destaca por si misma en diseño y estilo, es magnifico). Capaz en el apartado enemigos deja que desear, pero incluso en esa escases vi que se metio toda la gana y se hizo lo maximo posible para que tengan coherencia con lo que se esta narrando y como se va construyendo la historia. Las revelaciones, los giros, el final, para mi es maravilloso (que si, ya se que se repite de otros juegos, no me impoeta, me mantuvo con el culo pegado a la silla y observando cada rincon y cada detalle). Realmente tengo ganas no solo de hablar de este juego, sino de explicar el como jugarlo, ya que e notado que no mcuhos saben que la velocidad de ataque se puede incrementar, al igual que cada armadura cuenta con una habilidad pasiva de set completo, aparte que hay armas especiales que ofrecen diferentes daños (aunque el daño elemental no es tan poderoso como en el 2, pero con algunas armas si que se nota muchisimo la diferencia de DPS); realmente no me parevio que algunas armas fueran solo para "lucir combos", pero si note que hay muchas armas que existen porque si, ya que por cada una, hay una version mejorada muchisimo mas poderosa (y que se nota muchisimo mas poderosa, cabe agregar). En serio, me da mucha frustracion que un juego como este, que tiene tanto mimo y cariño detras se vea opacado por errores que cometio el estudio en el pasado (y a esto se le debe ahregar que salio en 2017, y todos sabemos que en ese entonces los puristas de los souls no paraban de tirar mierda a cualquier cosa que copiara los souls), debido a ello no se le dio tanta importancia a las cosas que le dan su identidad a este juego (lo cual por un lado es bueno ya que sus mecanicas son exclusivas, y no existe otro The Surge mas que The Surge, pero a la vez es triste que no se expliren los conceptos de juego que plantea este mismo). Una cosa que si me tengo que quejar al respecto, es que para mejorar tu equipamento debes ponerte a farmear... Y farmear de lo lindo en zonas muy concretas para asi subir de nivel las piezas de tu equipo, armas, etc. Pero a la vez tiene algo positivo, ya que siempre podes destruir todo el equipo que ya has creado y elaborar uno nuevo con los materiales del area en la que te encuentres al momento. Algo que tengo pendiente de revisar, es que con cada NG+ el juego se vuelve mas, y mas y mas facil. Lo cual se pudo corregir de una manera muy tonta, capear el nivel de las armas y armaduras al MK5, algo tan simple como ello te pondria en jaque y haria que si o si deoendas al 100% de los modulos (que son una mecanica que me fascino por completo). Podria seguir hablando de este juego, pero este mensaje ya quedo muy largo, realmente no sentia tanta pasion por algo desde hace ya muchisimo tiempo. De verdad que no ouedo hacer mas que recomendar este juego y su secuela, valen totalmente la pena, siempre y cuando te gusten los juegos tipo souls con combate rapido y muchisimo farmeo.

This is a great review. I doubt I’ll get this game as I can see myself smashing my controller over the difficulty. I avoid anything souls-like for that reason. I’m not the audience for it.

I’m my opinion this game has better bosses than the surge 2 bosses because most of them are actually developed enemies instead being stronger npcs. Black Cerberus is kinda like a mg Cerberus npcs but he was unique because he could spawn a pax drone. archangel eli should’ve been like the black Cerberus but harder in my opinion.

I love the surge! Im in final boss right now. But i have to disagree with the drones not being useful. They can very very useful with the harder enemies and bosses, especially if you use the implants to improve them. I liked the melee most, it knocked enemies down so you can get free hits. And the magnetic drone seems pretty useful too, especially with the last boss.

@@Liquidsunn87 I didn't like The Surge the first time I played it and put it down for a fair while, I tried it again and did not like it again, but now I am playing it and have completed my 3rd playthrough, it is a great game once you work it out. The environment definitely put me off to begin with, it is too drab for my liking.

This franchise could have been great Too bad they didn't understand that the Industrial setting of the first one greatly helped in creating a kind of horror like atmosphere that i really enjoyed. It also made sense as to why we were using tools to fight. The world was rather cohesive Second game is all bright and colorful, set in yet another generic Western city and the NPCs look like Watch Dogs 2 rejects. Combat is good but everything feels so disjointed and out of place. Oh well. Wasted potential

The combat is so slow you can learn a language and solve a crossword puzzle while fighting. Words can't express how bad combat is early game. But maybe it gets better
