Seen a mink rolling down a dirt road like a wheel one time. Took a little bit to understand what I was seeing. It had ahold of a rabbit and only way for it to carry it as to hug it and roll like a wheel. Only time I’ve seen it happen.

I found one of these once on a small road during a rainstorm. Poor thing's shell had already been cracked by a car running it over. I actually took it home and was able to nurse it back to health. It loved eating goldfish, which I had for another pet. Then released it in a lake that I knew to be full of its fellow snappers. It was actually quite friendly. It escaped while I had it at home and woke up to find it had crawled into my bed with me haha!.

I had to once, found the poor thing near the road and was gonna move it closer to a lake but someone had already hurt it and i could see its insides plus the spinal damage would have paralyzed its back legs. Didn't have any other quick way to put it down with me and with an injury like that i didn't want to waste time and run home for something. I always try to save them and have even been late for some important things before since i stop to help turtles off the road.

Near where I live they built a turtle fence on the highway where it passes through the river flats. It has protected a lot of turtles.

A real unfortunate part about roads is that not just snappers, but most turtles in general also will try to bask on the road. In which case even if you help move them from the road, they'll head right back to bask. I've moved a few snappers and maps in my home town only to realize that they were trying to bask and wouldn't stop trying to get back on the road.

When I was a little kid, maybe 3 or 4, I found one of these in our creek and thought it was just another turtle so I brought it home... My mom freaked out a little and my dad was actually quite impressed that I had managed to properly handle the thing. I named it Spike then we let it go. I had know idea how close I probably was to loosing some fingers till I was much older.

I ❤ turtles. It's so sad that people intentionally try to kill them, especially snappers. So misunderstood. I have a 1 year old snapper and he's actually very sweet and tolerates petting of his shell and feet. I hope he stays that way. He's only snapped at me when he mistakes my finger for food

Snapping turtles are genuinely one of my favorites. Yes common snappers can live up to 150 years, but Alligator snappers can live up to 2, or even 250! And I've seen some OLD boys on my property.

I hunt for sustenance from time to time, but I could never condone killing for sport. If you kill an animal to eat it, it's hunting. If you kill an animal because you can, it's killing. Honestly the best part about this is showing off some of the local faces behind the efforts to help the wildlife. Would love to see more snap shots of the work local wildlife management/park rangers since they could sure use some publicity for their efforts. Even if 60% of the job is mowing grass and moving fallen trees.

I love the support! I work at scales nature park and we actually conduct tons of research on multiple turtle and snake species. In the active season we're outside everyday surveying wetlands to gather population and morphometric data. All of our data goes to helping improve protection measures for these at risk species!

One day as I was gardening, a regular non-snapping adult turtle charged at me. I must have offended it somehow but I don't know how, it was on the other side of the garden. It came at me at the terrifying speed of about 6 - 7km/h. To this day I still consider myself lucky to be alive! 😳

It was probably working for the local lizard king. Next time just hit it on the back, it'll pop into its shell. Then you can kick it away easily. Careful it doesn't bounce off something and come spinning back at you though. Helps if you're dressed like a plumber.

Looking back at this story it looks like a joke but it really happened. Mad turtle locked on me from 20 meters away and came at me at a fast walking pace for humans. They loved eating flowers like salad and probably had eggs buried under some plant, I have no idea.

I used to work with these guys at zoos in education programs, and they're wonderful little things, and an incredibly important species in their species in their environment. I live in Kentucky so I have seen a lot of snapping turtles. I can remember once I was driving down a country road and see one. I found a place to pull over. By the time I had got back to the turtle someone had already ran him over. Only one car past me since I seen the turtle. The car was driving the same way I was and the turtle was on the other side of the road. The guy had drove on to the opposite side of the road just to run that turtle over. I was totally shocked.

A boy brought a much smaller snapping turtle to class once when I was in elementary school. He had it in an ice cream bucket that it managed to tip over from the inside and escape. Took a few minutes for the boy to realize this, too. When he did, the class *exploded.* All the girls were up on their desks screaming while all the boys were on their hands and knees trying to find the turtle. I, meanwhile, stayed in my seat and enjoyed the show.

I remember my parents finding one of these when they drained the pond in our yard. One got it to bite at a shovel and the other picked it up from behind and they took it to the shore of a river across the street from us. The sound of the snap on the shovel was so loud, like a gunshot almost. Certainly made me never want to approach one from the front.

Turtle-popping is also a really bad idea because of the risk of damage to your vehicle. They're like a 6" high speed-bump. It can crack a car's front facia or rocker panel, not to mention the impact on your car's front suspension.

Yeah, when I helped a decent sized snapper up here in northern Ontario cross a city road back to the park, it definitely introduced me to the urination defense mechanism. I had always heard you were supposed to lift from the bottom of the shell, as well, so I was easily within the splash zone and got a couple scrapes from its hind claws. Overall 10/10, would help my turtle bro again, pee and all.

I read that common snapping turtles can live to be over 200 yrs old. They return to the exact same nesting site every time they lay eggs, so new construction projects in or near wetlands and rivers interrupt their ability to return to their nesting site.

I've had a couple of interactions with Snapping Turtles in the last few years and I've found them to be intelligent and aware as well as non-aggressive. They were both in awkward situations and needed some assistance. I was able to pick them up and move them to a better location without them showing any aggression or fear. They seem to be aware that I was trying to help them and remained calm.

I found one in the road about the size of a dinner platter- I moved him to one side of the road, then as cars went by I realized his habitat was on the other side of the street, so I waited and we crossed again 😂🤦🏼‍♀️ thankfully I knew to hold him near the back! He didn’t pee or hiss or snap, though, so I’m hopeful he understood I was helping him find his way! Once he was on the correct side of the road, he was past the barrier and back under the water before I’d reached my car!

I pulled over on a road in a group of bikers and we stopped traffic and helped turtles get across. I was amazed how the goof car drivers were so angry, having to stop for a few minutes. We explained that these turtle's lives were more important than whatever nonsense they were rushing to on a Sunday afternoon.

Wish I'd watched this before my family and I found an alligator snapping turtle crossing a road in the boonies of North Carolina! We ended up just gently "kicking" it forward until it was out of danger. It did not appreciate that, obviously, and dang near got a chomp on my dad. But I just could NOT remember how to safely handle them, and we couldn't wait around. (plus no cell service to look it up!) At least we got it across safely, despite making it very angry in the process. Now I know for next time!

At 4:54 that just hurt me bad. So many people just dunk on reptiles, it's apparently ok to hurt them or kill them because they're just dumb, unlike animals with fur- APPARENTLY. We have turtles and a tortoise as well as other reptiles and we love all of them. People react negatively even to a leopard gecko- you know the lizard with a built in smile. Incredibly frustrating.

We live between 2 ponds and see snapping turtles about that size and painted turtles come down the road. We've watched them lay eggs. Usually we see the nests dug up a few months later by a coyote or some other hungry critter. I hope some nests make it.

When I was a child my mother took my sister and I to the beach, on the way home we saw a sea turtle that had somehow made its way from the beach onto the nearby highway. My mother stopped our mini-van and got out to save it. My sister and I watched (probably with ice cream or some other snack) as my mother went to grab the turtle and save it, but instead a semi truck swerved to run it over and splattered the sea turtle all over the road. That turned out to not be a fun day, people are monsters.

As someone who genuinely loves reptiles, it makes me thoroughly upset to hear people going out of their way to be cruel to animals. Especially animals too slow to get out of harm's way. I'm gonna go watch some more reptile videos to cheer myself up.

Turtles are the best, I absolutely love them. I‘ve got 3 now and have dozens over the years. They really are straight up dinosaurs.

I once saw a garbage can lid being moved by the wind, close by a pond. Whoopsie no! It was an enormous snapper, close to two feet diameter! Northeast Pennsylvania

Every year I get a couple move into my pond. Sometimes I find them on the grass and I watch them but they seem in no hurry to get back in the pond. Fascinating creatures.

We have those in our turtle and tortoise museum. They like it when you scrub their shells and the top of their heads with a broom. Never seen one on a road though. Did carry some other tortoises, turtles and terrapins off shared paths before though. And of course I have carried my pet terrapin around. As long as I do it before 8am and after 11am she won't try to bite me.

The fact that people can be so cruel as to voluntary hit animals will always make my stomach stick. Even with Cane toads here in Australia where they're a massive pest that should be killed I still hate the idea of me having to kill them, let alone hitting them with a golf club or freezing them to death like a lot of people do here.

So, the "reason" is evolution. BECAUSE they feel vulnerable, because their shell can't accommodate them. I was expecting something about using the mass of their shell as Leverage when chomping, or an extra bone/ligament that only they have that lets them spring their heads out faster. As always, thank you for showing us into the lives of these bibi creatures that deserve our Protection
