Thanks for presenting Vince and his excellent black and white images ! His words and comments are pure gold. I must say the gloom in the images is getting me down, like in a lot of contemporary photography... "Eerie", "haunting" and "dystopic" scenes all around. It takes a giant like Robert Adams to give a twist of beauty, poetry and hope to such desolate situations.
@BryanBirks
@BryanBirks 28 күн бұрын
I personally think the gloom does a good job of representing how a lot of people feel about the current state of America. While I love Adams’ work, I think he paints a picture that might be too beautiful. I look at Vince’s work as reality but the hope that I get from it is much more than a Robert Adams photo. Again, my opinion. When I look at Adams’ photos, I see a veil that is hiding something. That’s just as beautiful in its own right. Thanks for your comment and for watching! I enjoy discussions like this.

@@BryanBirks I see that, crisis seem to be closing in on people all over. I still wouldn't want to commit to riding that "wave" by simply reflecting these issues. Any picture is imho something of an amplifier both inwards and towards the viewers... Thanks again, you gave me a lot of thoughts about these things.

Thanks for posting this. Didn't know about Vincent Glielmi and his work, which is pretty amazing. His take on shooting locally really resonates with me. Especially given all the emphasis there is on street photography in bigger cities. Not totally hating on all the redundant content people share in whatever city, where someone can accidentally capture a "cool" image, but, there's something to be said about actually having to see what's around us, regardless of how mundane or taken for granted it might be, and produce something beautiful, something truly stunning, something, that usually falls into the landscape of our own benign existence.
@BryanBirks
@BryanBirks 29 күн бұрын
I agree. Street photography isn’t necessarily my cup of tea but I respect people for doing it. It actually fills me with more anxiety doing that compared to knocking on a stranger’s door. Not sure why. I wanted to showcase Vince because he’s a rad person but like you said, it is something different. Everyone does have something new to say but not everyone has something new to show.

@@BryanBirks If you're ever gonna be passing through SE Michigan at any point, hit me up, if you're comfortable with that. I have an RZ67 that I haven't ran enough rolls thru, (plus a bunch of other film cameras), and it'd be awesome to shoot whatever with you. I don't drive, so you'd have to be TAXI, but i can cover gas, coffee, beers, or whatever. SE Michigan is part of the Rust Belt on some level, but, there's more going on here than the purposeful failure of capitalism. Plenty of dried up smoke stacks, broken dreams, failed marriages, alcoholic kids, cousin lust, forgotten bar tabs, parking lot fights, frozen factories, and going to church on Sunday morning. lemme know

Really extraordinary things Fantastic video of a truly visionary artist. Eternity reminds me of a famous character in Australian history. A guy in the 1930s spent every day for years walking around Sydney writing Eternity in white chalk on the Sidewalks. He was basically asking people to think about eternity I'm not into his religion but the idea still resonates Anyway Good work both of you.

I'm in love with the music around 8 minutes in. Can anyone tell me what it is? - that aside, I'm so inspired by this work. In this digital age, a lot of photography is very similar like people are following the same formula, using the same filters. It's not easy to stand out on the stage of social media. These images speak to me from a place that's away from all that. They're bright and dark, exciting and very clever.

I’ll have to look up the song name and let you know. It’s from Artlist so it’s not a well known artist. I’m always looking for people that make different work.
