The Sutton Hoo helmet is an Anglo-Saxon helmet found during a 1939 excavation of the Sutton Hoo ship-burial. It was buried around 625AD and is widely believed to have belonged to King Rædwald of East Anglia; its elaborate decoration may have given it a secondary function akin to a crown. The helmet was both a functional piece of armour that would have offered considerable protection if ever used in warfare, and a decorative, prestigious piece of extravagant metalwork. It is described as "the most iconic object" from "one of the most spectacular archaeological discoveries ever made," and perhaps the most important known Anglo-Saxon artefact.
Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes), Charles Phillips (Carey Mulligan) and Peggy Piggott (Lily James) were all archaeologists
The visage contains eyebrows, a nose, and moustache, creating the image of a man joined by a dragon's head to become a soaring dragon with outstretched wings. It has become a symbol of the Early Middle Ages and "of Archaeology in general." It was excavated as hundreds of rusted fragments, and was first displayed following an initial reconstruction in 1945-46, and then in its present form after a second reconstruction in 1970-71.
The helmet and the other artefacts from the site were determined to be the property of Edith Pretty, owner of the land on which they were found. She donated them to the British Museum, where the helmet is on permanent display in Room 41.

Hello, I am the author of the Basil Brown biography and co-author of the Edith Pretty biography. It is always enjoyable to see new coverage of this story and you present the facts very well. Over the years I have encountered a variety of assertions about this story which I don't recognise but your material is spot on. Well done!

Chris you should check out the BBC documentary ‘Sutton Hoo- Masterpieces of the British Museum.’ Its on KZbin and narrated by Daniel Evans with contributions from various experts in the field, most of which has simply been repeated verbatim here. This is not original research sadly and that lack of transparency is disappointing from someone who describes themselves as a freelance journalist. It seriously detracts from what otherwise might be research to be taken seriously.

I am certainly going to find your book! I read about the Sutton Hoo dig at school when I was eight and that decided my future ( I later studied archaeology and worked on excavations until my knees had me change into becoming an archivist). And after having seen The Dig I am even more interested to read about Basil Brown and Edith Pretty. As I wrote in a comment above as I volunteer I encountered the rigid class system at digs still there even in the eigthies...

@@arthistorygirl2327 I read the novel first and then watched the Netflix film. The novel was written by John Preston, the nephew of Peggy Piggot, one of the archeologists in the real story. Both the novel and the film emphasized the personal relationships of Edith Pretty, Basile Brown and the squabbles among the museum officials and archeologists. I don't think they provide enough context for the actual discovery. Of course, the looming WW2 meant the excavation was done under a lot of pressure. The Netflix film greatly fictionalized the relationships much further than the novel. Carey Mulligan is a wonderful actress, but much younger than Edith Pretty, even though they emphasized a heart condition. In fact, the real Edith Pretty gave birth to her only child Robert at the age of 47! (that information is in the novel, but certainly not in the movie) and she didn't die (of a stroke) until 1942, three years after the war started in England. I really appreciate your video for providing the history and importance of the actual discoveries at the excavation.

I'd rather take to my knackers with a hammer than watch anything on Netflix. They're historic revisionists and piss in the face of our history and culture. I'm sure The Dig was well done given the positive reviews in comments I am seeing pop up the last few days however the sins of that company will never be washed clean.

@@lindataylor5779 I'm inspired to read the novel now. Edith Pretty was 55 at the time of "The Dig", in 1938 and her son was 8. Carey Mulligan did a fantastic job of acting 55, looking 55 and moving as an ill 55 year old woman. I looked at 55, (now I am 69) much like the woman portrayed by Carey Mulligan. People often thought I was younger. It sounds much older than it is. You are a harsh and judgemental critic and it seems if a woman is smart and 55 people assume she can not also be pretty. That is my experience. In photos the real Edith was also attractive, at this age, although heavier and looking a bit older. She was thought to be beautiful by her contemporaries. Even as an older woman. Look at The Dig again. That is not 35 year old Carey Mulligan. She is made up to be 55. Not as decrepit as you apparently assume 55 to be. haha. Irritated me at 55 and irritates me now. I shall read the book though though and thanks! Otherwise nice review.

Sites like the mounds in Sutton Hoo are common place where I live in Wisconsin USA. But, here they are effigy mounds from 1000 years ago made by the for-bearers of modern native people who lived in the area. I would recommend the movie 'The Dig', it was a good movie. The helmet is absolutely amazing. All I've ever pulled out of my garden is glacial granite boulders and pop tabs from the 1970's. I liked your video very much.

Very good, thank you. Just a couple of my own thoughts, which were heavily influenced by Professor Richard Gameson during my time at the University of Kent: The idea that Raedwald was in Mound 1 is perhaps more contentious than your narrative suggests. According to Professor Gameson, it is highly likely that burial mounds like this were actually fairly numerous in East Anglia, but most have been flattened by ploughing. Whilst they would of course always have been the last resting place for very important people (including Royalty) it does seem an extraordinary coincidence that the one mound surviving intact - and the only one the robbers didn't get to (their trench just missed the treasure) - just happens to be Readwald. When I was at university, a visiting professor from Cambridge made a case for the grave belonging to one of the Essex kings. He may or may not be correct but we must acknowledge the fact there are alternative theories. Second, regarding the helmet, the reconstruction of the fragments may or may not be accurate. The helmet was originally 'reconstructed' in the 50's but years later, it was dismantled and re-made in a different shape. We can't be certain that many of the fragments have been put back in the right places, and that the shape is actually totally correct - there just isn't enough of it left to be sure.

After having seen the Dig and listening to your excellent recounting of the story of the Sutton Hoo dig I am taken with how little changed over the decades of the attitudes in British archaeology. I was a Swedish archaeology student in the middle of the eighties. Since there was no way one could get experience at digging in Sweden, I and my future husband went over to England and Wales to work as volunteers on excavations. Fantastic years and we learnt so much and found brilliant friends I am still in touch with today. But what struck me, coming from a much more egalitarian and less "class aware" country was how the directors, who were nominally in charge of the dig and got all the academic credits for them NEVER EVER got their own little hands dirty- not even a show of mattocking, emptying heavy wheelbarrows or even any work with the trowel! Everyone else seemed to think it was normal but I seethed... And then, as a the end of my volunteer digs I became a very experienced digger and could - as Basil puts it in the film- read the soil from colour and density- get ones finds questioned by the director who didn´t even bother to lower himself to my lewel and go down on his knees to examine the soil, that was utter humiliation. ( I had found a clear row of stakeholes by the side of an Iron age road, but that didn´t suit the directors theories so he completely dismissed it..) And , even if I was angry,I could go home and not encounter such behaviour at any dig anymore but poor Basil Brown had to put up with this all his life apparently, just because the snobs could not lower themselves to get their hands on experience that he had! I feel so angry and sorry for Basil Brown!!! I certainly hope British archaeology is far more egalitarian nowadays and that directors of excavations actually get down on their knees and dig!

@arthistorygirl2327 3 жыл бұрын
Gosh, yes that's fascinating! Thanks very much for sharing, it's really interesting to hear from someone who's got experience in archaeology and it sounds very frustrating to be completely dismissed by the directors! Presumably you would have known what you were looking for, given you were used to being on your hands and knees Do you still go on digs? You are right as well, Britain is a very class-based society and people can be very snobby - it's quite strange although I do think people are getting better.

His book on the excavations is well worth a read, but this is a decent summary of what he found. “Regardless where you obtained you info.” She stole the “info” from a BBC documentary in a blatant act of word-for-word, argument-for-argument plagiarism. She even uses the same images in the same sequence as the BBC documentary. To put it in words perhaps more adapted for our times: she flat out pirated the film’s content and passed it off as her own.

I think the biggest disservice done to the Anglo Saxons is the idea they dragged these ships from the Deben several hundred metres uphill to the burial ground in the manner of Sisyphus when logic suggests the ships were built on the hill specifically for the royal burials.

I especially like the visual aids you choose. A good map is worth 2,000 words! Well done.

Sorry I'm such an idiot, but I kept giggling at the mention of Ms. Pretty, which sounded like a character from a Monty Python skit. I can imagine Eric Idle, or Graham Chapman dressed up as Ms. Pretty going on about something as a police officer walks in and warns them that this skit has gotten too silly! But I loved learning about this important find! Thanks!

Wow! Excellent presentation! Thank you for taking the time to put this all together. I had the privilege of being able to visit the Sutton Hoo treasure in 2006. Would be interesting if there was anything that indicated that Raedwald was left handed which would of been looked at as almost mystical during that time. They think the sword through the hilt wear pattern was used by a left handed person.
