It is, but let's not get carried away. The facts here are that the Gotland Class submarine uses an ultra silent propulsion method to avoid cavitation in comparison to other diesel submarines. It's a fun story to think about how a smaller nation like Sweden could sink the mighty nuclear carriers of the United States. But that's all it is. The war game that's talked about was when a Swedish carrier was put in the perfect situation to attack the Reagan: - It had predetermined knowledge of where the carrier would be operating - It was able to attack a ship that was not traveling at its top speed, and therefore was able to keep pace - War games do not take into account countermeasures or weapon system failures The entire point of this story is to foolishly undermine the US Navy. In reality, the Swedish submarine would have no idea where the Reagan is. It doesn't have fuel to be wandering around the oceans for weeks hunting for it. And United States Carriers rarely travel at speeds with which the Gotland can match speed without cavitation occurring. None of these factors mean anything anyways because Sweden is an ally to the United States, no other country has such capable submarines besides the United States and their Seawolf class submarines. Let me ask you something: If it were as easy to sink American Carriers by just making stealthy submarines, why hasn't China kicked the United States out of the Pacific by now? Why does Russia refuse to challenge the United States for the seas? It's because it's not that simple. United States nuclear carriers are the most powerful and well protected weapons of war in the world, and every single Admiral, General and defense member would not argue that. It's an interesting story though, nonetheless. I've just seen it dozens of times now because it's easy to get views with making videos on this topic.

@@DurzoBlunts well, inevitably, the methods used to 'simulate' attacks don't account for all variables. for instance, air-to-air missiles in real conflict have a pretty poor track record, but how do you accurately simulate how the real weapons and defenses function in a wargame where actually firing at the target is off limits? There's limits and factors that cannot be accounted for by any test that doesn't follow through on the actual attack. You can of course, try computer simulations, but that presents a different variation of the same problem - the simulation is only as accurate as the data it's based on, and almost never perfectly reflects reality...

I remember that we were told one thing while I was in the Navy, "It doesn't matter how many defenses you have, if the enemy launches enough missiles or torpedoes, a few are bound to go through". That's not what happened here of course, this was a precision attack, but it's just a saying to show us that nothing is invincible and that assumptions and cockiness cost lives and ships.

There are so many places, so many situations where this submarine would be perfect AND it has been improved since then. " One size fits all" seems pig-headed and a foolish. In addition, these subs are 16+ years old and don’t have the technology modern subs have. Nuclear submarines can't be detected either, it's been that way for decades. I'm sure this video makes all this technology seem new and cutting edge but stealth submarines aren't new. People often dismiss diesel-electric subs as some WW2 relic. That couldn't be farther from the truth. The reason nuclear subs are generally 'better' is mostly due to the fact that they tend to have newer components. A well designed diesel-electric sub with the newest technology is just as good as a nuclear-powered one. In fact, since a nuclear reactor cannot be easily shut down, modern diesel-electrics are actually significantly quieter than nuclear subs. So if you only want to use your subs defensively, diesel-electric is very much the better choice. Add in the fact that a nuclear sub still has to replenish supplies for the crew on a regular basis, which significantly negates its main strength of infinite range, it's very reasonable that everyone is investing in diesel-electrics again.
@DurzoBlunts
@DurzoBlunts 4 жыл бұрын
For a blue water centered navy (USN) nuclear is the way to go. Supplies can be replenished at sea, in a small port overseas or large port at home. The gotland excels at defending its nations home watets, what it was designed for. Nuclear subs are for long extended duration missions. They'll stay under the waves longer than a diesel can for air before needing supplies only. 111 days is a long time without needing to surface. Nuclear reactors dont need to be shut down for very quiet running... They shut down cooling pumps under no speed or very slow speed and let natural convection current of water cool the reactor. Thus allowing them to disappear into the noise of the ocean.

The Gripen A version which was what the article was talking about, is even with some and better than most of the fighters of its era. Meaning these were planes with 80s and 90s tech. The Gripen E is comparable to the F35 and Sweden themselves say it possibly isn't quite as good, most of which has to do with the stealth technology that the F35 and F22 have which the Gripen does not have.

The Swedish sub as most likely a diesel electric submarine that can indeed be very stealthy. I was stationed aboard the USS HADDO SSN604 and the only time we were ever detected when stalking a CVN was when we were spotted by a helicopter due to the extremely clear water in the Caribbean. Exercises such as the one high lighted in this video are extremely valuable in the development of both technology and ASW tactics. One possible correction to the video is that surface craft use ACTIVE sonar, that is the rely on the sonar “returns” or pings to echo locate an intruding submarine. The efficiency of active sonar is somewhat mitigated by “Own Ship’s Noise” which is proportional to the speed of that ship. However, my information is somewhat dated and I suspect that sonar technology has changed in the intervening years.

@@markj2093 Yes, pumps can be loud but not always. Even a passively cooled reactor can create noise from bubbles or flow through the coolant lines. I was mostly thinking of (diesel) electric subs. The latest generation can use hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity and the electric motors are coupled directly to the prop shaft. So, no pumps or gearboxes at all. The easiest way to find those subs might be to look for the "black hole" in the sea where absolutely no noise is coming from...

Aug? Lol, no, it's generally a pile of gender fluid garbage. I served in the FDF and for us the Swedish army is a total joke. We could beat them all in 1-2 days and Finland is a smaller country by almost half. The Swedish navy is a different deal, and likely better than ours by quite a bit, but their army is almost worse than no army at all.

Also, I very much like the narrator's voice; his delivery incites within me a sense of suspense and mystery, and my preference for this over the Dark 5 read-only content cannot be overstated. Finally, I have been favorably impressed with the selection of topics. I hope that you will keep this great channel going.

Some other folks have commented on wargames vs real life, so that's a dead horse. But here's another: The white "low-side" AAR will reflect what the US Navy wants to release. In this case, a sub penetrated our picket and sank our carrier. This can be done as impetus to tighten up SOPs TTPs etc. Or nefariously, try and convince Congress that more money is needed to secure the fleet. The black "high-side" AAR reflects a total different result and data set. You (KZbinrs and this Channel) will never know if the task force spotted it or not. The absolute margins of capabilities are closely held state secrets. Similar to the actual top speed of the SR-71 which is still classified decades after its decommissioning. So take whatever you read about these claims with a grain of salt. It is in no one's best interest, if they work for the US Navy, DOD, or US R&D to EVER tell you what they can and can't detect, and what they can and can't do.

Imagine how destabilizing this is if true. Yeah, your 13 billion dollar floating airfield is obsolete..... Something tells me that if true, then new anti sub tactics have been figured out by now. Frank Hoy, i'm with you on this. If the U.S. Navy is leaking the tactical capabilities and weaknesses of its primary platform for projecting power, it has much bigger issues than losing a war game with Sweden. Your suggestion regarding budgetary increases is very plausible, but I also see a possibility that a video like this is part of a global disinformation campaign, a "false flag" sort of thing.

@@natskivna Oh it is true, in the open seas and oceans diesel-electric subs are fairly useless against even conventional powered aircraft carriers, let alone nuclear ones. However in the coastal areas for which they were meant, diesel electrics pretty much rule supreme, and especially those build by Japan, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany. At least half a dozen navies have scored hits during wargames against the US navy, including their carriers, that's nothing new. What a lot of people seem to forget is that it isn't just the qualities of the subs which make them so stealthy and efficient, but that the superior tactics used by their captains is what really turns them into such incredibly powerfull naval weapons.

That is not saying it should have or didn't. The sub was loaned with an additional 12 month extension, thats going to have cost something somehow, somewhere from the US to Sweden, and or with a reduction or write off of WW2 or Coldwar debt, or someother exigence of classified deal to do so.

In two years the next generation of this Swedish submarine is delivered to Swedish deference. The Saab A26 is something extra. Very cheap for a sub, much longer distance and even more quiet. Connected with the fighter jets and surveillance system also made by the same company. US military is one of the largest customers, and only country in war that Sweden sells this technology to.

John - It's as if Sweden is selling them to Sweden, because in the 1800's, 1/2 of the population of Sweden came to the US. That's when my Swedish ancestors immigrated here. Times were hard in Sweden and rich oligarchs owned most of the land, and most people were like slaves to them. At that time, the US government wanted to settle the midwestern US land, so they gave the railroad millions of acres to develop the land. The railroads went to Sweden and offered people land that the railroad financed with no money down. The poor people in Sweden moved to the US and had large farms in the midwest.

Jim Jackle Yes, very fascinating. I’ve been to Ellie’s island where all the Swedes (and all other Europeans) disembarked. Many heartbreaking stories on the walls. There are movies and books about the families that made the journey over the sea, what they left behind and what they got when arrived. Can’t imagine it’s so much easier today, just jump in an airplane and fly back a few days later. The first 50 years of 1900 was really a raise in standard for Sweden, coming from a poor country with not much food, to one of the highest standard in the world. Of course much thanks to the politicians that managed to stay “neutral” during both world wars. But as late as 1970 there were still used outhouses in central Stockholm capital and houses without running water. A weird thought. An apartment in the same house today costs 20 years of salary.

Then itll try to commission the first spacecraft to launch off its deck, only to flop. like the Space Force. Itd go out and do alot of War Games instead of actually doing its fucking job to protect the citizens of the US. even when a hurricane runs through Florida and Porto Rico. The only reason that the US Navy knew that losses had been taken was that after every shot a flare had to be launched by the sub. This was back in the early 90s.

The Germans managed something similar. U24 vs. USS Enterprise Quote: " During a manoeuvre in the Caribbean, a German diesel submarine (U 24) broke through the supposedly impenetrable defence ring around the US nuclear aircraft carrier "Enterprise", fired a simulated torpedo array from a favourable firing angle, photographed the 75,000-tonner through the attack periscope and then emerged without warning directly next to the giant target. The US admiral is said to have been furious.'" and they've been messing with the U.S. nuclear submarines. Quote: "Another submarine of the type 206 A (500 ts) passed a US hunting submarine of the Los Angeles class (7100 ts, atomic propulsion) in the Caribbean several times at a short distance without the US crew having recognized the near "enemy". According to witnesses, American submarine officers on board the German boat watched the duel "with drops of sweat on their foreheads"."
