Tragic to see Brian go down hill like he did. 😢 The shaking and hobbling around from the heart attacks and drinking, destroyed him. He was a brilliant front man, talented and had it all. Not knowing his parents set him on a downward spiral. The poor guy was lost. 😞 May he rest in peace. Something he didn’t have when he was alive. Thank you for the great music 🎵 and memories. ❤💕

Was a nurse at hillingdon hospital and on the morning I arrived for work when we had the days handover it was explained who ad arrived during the night I was the only member that morning who recognised his name and his music so I was assigned to care for him.....such a lovely humble person grateful for everything I did for him even though I kept explaining it was my job and i was happy to do everything and anything to help him its sad when people find success end up lonely

This truly is heartbreaking and very hard to watch for me. To understand addiction one needs to understand childhood trauma. To quote Dr Gabor Maté (he worked for 12 years in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside): "Addiction is only a symptom, it's not the fundamental problem. The fundamental problem is trauma. Addiction connects back to trauma that people have experienced in their life."

I was born in 1963 and remember The Sweet well playing on Top of the Pops. What a band, they were magnificent and with Brian Connolly out front he was the ultimate showman. Good looks, coupled with a great singing voice and that beautiful long blonde hair. God rest his blessed soul along with Mick and Steve, their music will live on for an eternity. Can't forget about Andy either, it must be hard for him to be the last surviving member. Long live the music of The Sweet. Such an underated band at the height of their success.

Brian and I had several evenings together. At the latter days of his life, he used to pop in at "The Old Orchard' restaurant in Harefield, where my band had a residency. A few drinks, lots of conversation, always polite and appreciative of the fellow muso's : not a prima dona which is rare in this business. He was a lovely chap and great company. Wish him all the best if he is in a better place. Deserved better!

Has anyone said anything about Parkinsonism? Brian looks like he's right out of the textbook. The cardiac arrest can cause brain damage, possibly to the basal ganglia, which is just one of many ways to get Parkinsonism (different from Parkinson's disease). A mistake people make often is that if someone is messed up, and they do drugs, it must therefore be the drugs that caused it. This is how Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd went without help for his schizophrenia for so many years (everyone assumed it was his LSD), and how Carrie Fisher went without help for her bipolar disorder (assumed it was her cocaine and alcohol). Connolly's cardiac arrests (different from heart attacks) might have been related to alcohol and/or other drugs, but he might also have had some unfortunate genetics at play. (He probably wouldn't have known.) He sounds no worse than many other rockers in his behavior, just in his body's response to it.

So the effect of lack of oxygen to the basal ganglia has the same effect as the drop in dopamine?
@dcs002
@dcs002 2 жыл бұрын
@@whitmanpriceandhaddad3074 It certainly can have that effect, yes. The common factor is that oxygen and dopamine are both required for proper function of the basal ganglia. (Lack of oxygen kills neurons in the region.) Repeated head trauma (i.e., boxing, as in Muhammad Ali) can also permanently disrupt that function. Parkinsonism is the result of basal ganglial malfunction, though there can be many causes of that malfunction.

It is still very painful to watch, seeing this once very talented man reduced to the state he was when he appeared in this documentary. Reading between the lines, the documentary revealed that Brian was sort of a tortured soul, who was abandoned as a baby, which seemed to affect his life, and relationship with others, including band members. Long live "The Sweet" and the Glam Rock Music of the early 70's. r.i.p. Brian.

Hi Allan I don't know how I missed this one, but it was a lovely tribute, I so remember the Sweet, had no idea of his history, but you know a lot of these young musicians are idolized and sometimes regardless of whether they had family history, are chased, screamed at by young women, suddenly they earn more money that they ever had, but often too much to cope with, many die too young. So sad.

It's so bad to watch. But I don't think alcohol alone was to blame for Brian's poor health. Parkinson's, MS, or some other such nerve disease contributed. Just looking at his gait pattern. I assume everybody was well aware about Brian's drinking problem so I wonder even more, why nobody helped him to get rid of his habit. ? But isn't it so typical for this society, if one has a problem, the so called friends stay away , watching the situation no matter what outcome ? Perhaps, Brain was right in one of his interviews when telling that he never got on with the rest of the band and blaming the situation within the band which leaded him into drinking like a fish. When Andy said that Brain leaving the band was not for personal reason , it's simply not true , but I guess he knows it very well.

Wow. The Sweet were my favorite band as a child. All us kids loved songs like Ballroom Blitz and Fox on the run. Living in Australia we had no chance to see them. However I did see Andy and Mick tour as The Sweet with the first Iron Maiden vocalist performing lead. They played Sweet FA, which thrilled me no end. My favorite song as a kid. Of course as we grow we change and I moved onto a wider world of music. But I will never forget The Sweet and the joy they gave me so many years ago. And Mick was my first drum hero. :) RIP to both of them. :(

Lady your wrong it happened in a pub in Staines and Brian himself admitted in interview he'd been a flash Harry chatting up their birds and then being foolish enough to threaten to take them on. He was attacked by his car and left unconscious by the 2 assailants and band management hushed it up. That beating cost the band their really big break to play with the The Who a band they all loved at Charlton Athletic Football Club, and his voice was never the same afterwards despite everyone in Sweet pulling together to try and make it all happen.

the tragedy of Brian is one we've seen before and after , and its one I can kinda relate to also. Its usually the kind , sensitive and warm soul that gets caught up in addictions of whatever kind. Brian got lost in drinking , like I experienced for quite some years too. His story is kinda understandable though too , like said in the docu > on monday he was just another person walking the streets to be shot to enormous stardom within days and being thé man . The following years with all the attention worldwide , standing in the spotlight wherever you go , the temptations , money , girls , ......it all goes by in an instant. To ` wake up` a decade later and realize its over ...its gone and you ask yourself ` where have I been all this time..`....you don`t live your own life no more , and what to us seems all só fabulous and desirable becomes something what has been , what's over and out and the only thing that's left is the one you once were , `cause where do you go when you've been on the highest peak and top you can get ??...its only human to want it back , to keep hanging in those bygone times , and thinking that when you get it all together you can do it again. But reality hits hard when you find its out of reach , its impossible to ` be that one` once again , and you're just the name and man from the past. Its given to only a few to cope with that , to move on and live another life from thereon , its truly sad to see Brian fighting with this , and to see him hanging on to something that is not there no more.....and off course drinking or other drugs are then there for you to deal with it all , or loose yourself in it. His very last interview is so painful and heartbreaking , such a gentle , gifted and SWEET soul wich is still there but is also heavily affected by pain , disappointments and clearly the alcohol. Like I said before its also sooo understandable , and I can totally relate to it. The harsh judgements I also read here and under other posts must come from people with no heart , or experience in life .....it takes some dámn strong legs to carry all that fame , stardom and past. I myself have found new goals , new meaning......and have found the strength to kick out alcohol and dope ( gód did I love that too !) all together in my life , ......my past ( and don't get me wrong > I am not in any way comparing it to Brian's life!) is still lingering around , and yes those were the years , wouldn't`t have missed it for a second ...and no regrets whatsoever but that was , and will never ever come back. Looking back is still fun and brings a big smile to my face but these are different times.....and I consider myself lucky to be able to say this > LIFE IS STILL GREAT !....that was then ; this is nów !!.......big thanks to the Sweet , to Brian & Co for some of the best ever memories from also probably the greatest decade ever. LOVE!!!

Well said ... yes, Brian was the only member without other skills than his beautiful voice and his pretty look ... i now believe that frustrated him in the later years ... just my feeling ... i am full of interest for astrology ... i took a look on Brians horoscope and it is really shocking ... all is in there ... the searching for his real family ... the stardome and the fall ... i love him so much and i believe, it was cold inside of him ... he looked and sounded like an Angel ... i was a huge fan in the 70th and i lost him when i married ... when i later did read about his last years and his death ... i was sooo shocked ... i cried a lot for hours ... he has been loved ... but i believe, not by himself 😪
