Actually lead was big important for printing presses, because the lead-antimony-tin alloy used was i think the first alloy they found that had the right properties to make a lot of them itty bitty letter block things. The lead was cheap and had a low melting point, the tin made it tougher, and the antimony made it harder, wear less, and made the metal shrink less when it cooled. I took all of this info from the Wikipedia article on Type metal, which is what it's called

when i was a toddler i ate paint chips from my windowsill (kid thought process: picking them is fun > uh oh, mom will get mad if she sees i made a mess > better hide the evidence > mouth). it turns out the paint was lead paint. when my parents took me for my yearly check-up i tested so high for lead the doctor thought my parents were giving me something 😆

@DJstarrfish10 ай бұрын
Just a nerd who likes guns here - best I can tell, the problem of malleability is a _much_ bigger issue than cost or weight when replacing lead in bullets. The most popular alternative to lead or copper-jacketed lead bullets is 100% copper bullets, and while copper expands enough to grip the rifling of the barrel, it doesn't expand in hollow points the same way lead does. For e.g. target shooting, that's not too much of an issue - yeah, copper bullets are more expensive but lots of companies capitalize on their lighter weight and advertise copper-bullet cartridges as "hyper-velocity." But for hunting or personal defense, it's not a viable solution. Most jurisdictions straight-up mandate hollow points for hunting, the idea being that it leads to a quicker and more humane kill for physics/anatomy reasons, and it's usually frowned upon (read: a judge will frown on you) for personal defense because hollow points don't go through 10 layers of drywall and hit whatever was behind what you were aiming at. I've also seen powder-coated and "total-metal jacket" (as opposed to the traditional "full-metal jacket," which leaves the bottom of the lead bullet exposed) bullets touted as a "green" alternative. I don't know what the scientific literature says about them, if they say anything at all, so I can't comment on how much "greener" they are.
@spookisghostly461910 ай бұрын
12:46 the main problem is lead based primers that are still somewhat common but yes when a bullet travels some lead is evaporated by friction
