Going to tell you about some funky cryptids and mythical creatures you might not have heard of before. They range from Oklahoma and Fresno all the way to Japan and the middle east.

The medieval snails have a theory to them, actually - it was a joke about how snails were a fearsome beast that waged war on people's plants, so, what to send? A warrior, a knight, etc. It's like sending in the fire department because you found a spider.

Fun fact about Saint Christopher: It is believed by some scholars that "canaanite" was misheard as "canine," which caused the saint to be depicted as having a dog head.

@@burtismydogsname, I have no idea in which time period this is supposed to have happened in, but with stuff like vowel shifts and the popularity of the word canine, I can’t imagine cananite and canine to have been homophonous many centuries ago.

Your theory on cryptids is incredible and the general concept of some random guy doing weird shit in the woods getting spotted by someone else is something I've always kind of vaguely thought of as being the reason for most myths and folklore throughout history, and you can even extend it to humans seeing some nonhuman activity that they didn't have an explanation for and then, for example, making an entire global religion out of it. The idea that most beliefs throughout history are just because of people getting really high and seeing a rainbow (or in this case seeing a dude who likes to pretend to be an animal) is very fitting somehow.

I know you’re just joking around but I’ll just convey something I’ve learned from working in anthropology scholarship: many, many cultures take behaviors like sorcery and witchcraft very seriously. Most sorcerers in indigenous cultures utilize animal totems and skins. From there, it becomes pretty clear how contemporary furries would be treated in the situation you describe

Cool video. have you considered Hypertrichosis as a source of animal-hybrid beliefs? They're real people with a congenital disorder that makes hair grow excessively. One form is all over the body but another form is mostly just the face, literally all of it. They are sometimes called "dog-faced-people" in freak-shows. Since it can be passed down to children, if a family of them lived away from society to avoid being discriminated against, that could totally be interpreted as "a tribe of dog-people living in the distant wilds."

I loved your theory regarding dog headed people hahaha. In all seriousness, what we know as reality and fiction was way more mixed inbetween back in the day, that's why we see marginalia like something funny, while they were trying to depict "what lays beyond our control". Saint Christopher which is my fav saint wasconsidered "outside of the reach of the holy church" and as such, they were depicted eerely. Nevertheless that's a great vid
